On the surface Lords and Villeins has a great concept. There is something beautiful about designing a functional economy where everything works with money changing hands and eventually ending up back in your pocket as the Lord or Lady of the region. The only caveat is – It does not work. The Good: Bright and colorful world which has an immediate draw. Current games generally seem to obsess over dark, Earth tones instead of obscenely eye-assaulting bright colors. This was very welcome. The…

While the core game is awesome and great, the game breaks down due to AI issues after reaching a population of 100-150, and becomes completely unplayable (NPCs break and stop performing tasks completely) by around 250 pop. The dev committed to fixing the issues and initially promised to fix the issues, and said to expect early 2025 for a fix. Michal, the dev, when asked in late 2025 on the Discord made an announcement that he had a child - he was wished the best by the community and we…

Pros: * Really interesting economy model. * Lots of production chains that don't overwhelm the player because they're managed automatically. * Blueprinting feature to save you from setting up repetitive houses. * A pretty long campaign mode which does decent job in teaching mechanics of the game. * Seems to still be developed quite actively. Cons: * Crashed couple times. * Serious bugs (like campaign objectives not being loaded when you load a game). * Some balance issues making certain…

Avoid this one - it is utterly broken. And that's a shame, because if it worked, it would be a true gem. With well over 100 hours into the game, I have witnessed it break down completely in my last two playthroughs. There are a number of game breaking bugs. I have had visitors visit the butcher's storefront and die of starvation on the spot. They simply get to the tile and stand around to die. The game doesn't tell you when visitors starve, and it won't tell you they died. You will get that…

Since there is now paid DLC I will write a review. I don't think this game is in a good state. Many things are obscured by menus or not fully explained so you will likely spend hours learning the game. In reality its fairly simple and most of the difficulty comes from the lack of control over individual pawns as a design choice. You have to decide when to add complexity, but many families are not self-reliant so if you want to see the midgame you need to slowly progress. Many of your actions,…

I got really into this game, it's my type of game, just what I was looking for. However, the developer hasn' t updated in almost a year and there are game-breaking bugs, to the point where it ruins your whole savegame. It's not profitable anymore and it's a small developer, I get it... I'm still very sad that my game became unplayable after 12 years building my town because the regional taxes aren't delivered, amongst other bugs...

It's a cute townbuilder, in a similar vein to rimworld or dwarf fortress. The main feature that sets it apart is its economy, where every household needs to buy/sell to get the food/clothes/goods they need. While the game mechanics themselves are explained decently enough (though often lacking in the minor details), the game doesn't present nearly enough information to allow the player to understand the consequences of those mechanics and make any informed decisions. The issue is that the game…

So, after seeing this on Humble Monthly and then (as always) checking out the Steam reviews before actually claiming the game, I still decided to go for this, despite how many negative reviews there were. I love colony builder games and don't even mind micro-managing to a certain extent. I'm also a bit of a spreadsheet nerd when it comes to gaming, so I thought this would still be up my alley. However, after just under 2 hours of playtime, which was literally me doing the very first "learn the…

This game is a crucial turning point in the up-and-coming generation's city and town simulators. Ever since Banished introduced the concept of varying commodities as part of the inhabitants' "survival" and "quality of life", this game has added the next step of "administrating through private property", where the a ruler-player is given an additional fog-of-war that is each family's private possessions and land ownership. Maintaining the wealth and purchasing power of the people becomes an…

It's a village simulator with a very complex set of production chains. The most interesting thing about it is that your village has an internal economy. Villagers have to buy things from each other, food and items your villagers produce aren't community property the way they are in most colony simulators. It has a 2D top down view that's a lot like Rimworld. You zone areas as houses or workplaces, and build walls, furnishings, and workbenches inside those zones. I really, really wanted to…

Do you want to do 20 hours of tutorial scenarios where they insist on you doing the same thing over and over again? Instead of just a tutorial as you play? Or a quick tutorial showcasing game mechanics? This is the game for you then. You can waste tens of hours just to learn about 20 minutes of gameplay. Not sure what the dev. was thinking here. Otherwise it's a fun game.

Now, this game has a lot of pros: charming visuals, unique economic system, relaxing gameplay... and those things drew me in again and again! Well, when this game was in early access and a work in progress, I would have recommended this game, but not any longer. The devs basically released this game, than abandoned it. Release, one hot fix, then abandonment. The Unity update that should have been urgent came out many weeks after it urgently came out for all the other Unity games in my library. And with no notification whatsoever. If you want to buy an old game that was okay once, but was abandoned immediately after release, then…

I've been following along and playing through updates since this game has released. Starting off good, the content is great and fun to play with. The play on production chains and medieval economy simulation is something I enjoy most, but it can get very confusing very fast (took me atleast 3-4 playthroughs and all the tutorials to even remotely understand half the mechanics of this game). Fun and unique game but a few issues that are borderline game breaking: 1. Certain professions simply can't sustain themselves and need to be actively subsidized by the Government no matter what, this is annoying to have to do constantly for the same families over and over again (also there should be an option to tell hunters not to attack things that are likely to kill them like wolves. For hunting families it is just a ticking time bomb until they all die, even if you give them Armour it is…

There is an issue with this game that causes it to only use 2 of the CPU cores. In my case, I'll have 2 cores maxed and 6 idle by midgame. At midgame the game lags so hard the framerate drops to 10fps. looking at the forums, it seems the game is abandoned. I really like this game and its a shame, the Dev's have a great concept and did a good job executing. At this point in time I can't recommend this game. FYI I have over 650 hours of game play.

The game would be great, except the last update seems to have made its performance unplayable with more than 30 people in your village or so. The last update from a year and a half ago, since which development seems to have not been really happening at all, aside form language localizations which presumably are being farmed out anyay. There are positives. In fact, I wouldn't call it a bad game, it is not a bad little colony sim. The ultimate issue is for similar money you can get a game that does everything else it does better. There two points were the ultimate deciders in giving the thumbs down. 1. The game keeps crashing when I try to save it. There might be a fix to this, but once my settlement reaches a certain size this starts happening, or will say it was unable to save it. If you like colony builders with high complexity like Rimworld and Dwarf Fortress, this game is for you. It has a fresh take on the whole Medieval Village take, making it so you don't control every pawn yourself, but rather set conditions for the families and watch them go. This game has potentially but lacks in quite a few things. Firstly the tutorial is still bad. It currently is so that you don't have freedom, yet can fail and have to do exactly as it tells you to do. If you do something early, like give yarn to your fisher people, then you can't finish it and have to repeat 20 minutes or so. In addition the UI is bad, escape doesn't clear your view often. It isn't clear what the rulers do, if you have to bed them, or put a roof over their workhouse. You can't…

I got into this game maybe a year ago, and coming back now many of the bugs I was dealing with before have been addressed, so that's nice. A stunning city-building game with a unique deep economic and feudal system. This diamond is one of a kind - no one has yet attempted to recreate the market model so well. Unfortunately, there are plenty of problems in the game as well. This game is good, it's about production lines and economies so you need to play it from that perspective. You're managing and planning a market based economy, if you're not putting restrictions on how some goods can be brought and sold you're going to have a bad time.
