Logan's Run
In the 23rd century, inhabitants of a domed city freely experience all of life's pleasures — but no one is allowed to live past 30. Citizens can try for a chance at being "renewed" in a civic ceremony on their 30th birthday. Escape is the only other option. From TMDB

While the basic premise of a dystopian youth-oriented society runs through both, the film makes major changes. The film adds a critique of conforming to social norms. ⏳🏃♂️👁️ #booksky #filmsky

unlabelledView post →Just suddenly struck by the random memory that one of the last *pre*-TPM GenX "nerd comedy" movies, 'FREE ENTERPRISE,' has a big scene where the "angry guy" adult nerd yells at a child(?) for thinking scifi "began" with Star Wars and never having heard of Logan's Run. RM Burnett made this movie 😅

unlabelledView post →We're less than a week past the MAGA majority on SCOTUS gutting the Voting Rights Act but Amanda Litman, founder and co-chair of "Run For Something", is tweeting about purging the Democratic Party of anyone over the age of 60. And you thought "Logan's Run" was just a cheesy movie from the 1970s.
unlabelledView post →it's so interesting how they leaned into the weirder elements of Star Wars instead of the more traditional aspects of its narrative. Later trailers would sell it more as a space fantasy-action film like it actually is, but this seems to be trying to capture that Logan's Run/2001 crowd
unlabelledView post →btw I love Logan's Run. even the dated and goofier aspects of the movie.

unlabelledView post →Watching Logan's Run, which I only saw once before years ago, and jeez. It's just terrible. It could serve as a Star Trek episode for the story, but really, it's so cheesy. Hard to believe they gave it a special Oscar for special effects. And this was a year before the first Star Wars film. Yikes.
unlabelledView post →I guess technically Rocky Horror is sci-fi! 1975. So that's the lone classic film between Space Odyssey & Star Wars. The other 10 y'all have come up with? Sorry, but Logan's Run, Battle For the Planet of the Apes, & Rollerball are not classics. Clockwork Orange is, but yike it hasn't aged well.

unlabelledView post →Andor's actually a good example of Star Wars reaching back for sources outside its usual wheelhouse given how much it cribbed from '70s dystopic sci-fi contemporary with the original film, like Blake's Seven and Logan's Run, or even Lucas's own THX 1138.

unlabelledView post →Today marks the 50th anniversary of Logan's Run, released on 23 June 1976. My strongest memory of the film is that, back in the 1970s, I owned a very truncated Super 8 version which I used to show to my friends on a projector. It proved remarkably popular thanks to one scene featuring Jenny Agutter shedding her clothes. What can I say? We were schoolboys! Fifty years later, I still think the film stands up remarkably well. unlabelledView post →Watching Logan’s Run. Love it. Shiny dystopian future, terrible hair, giant computers, and humans apparently deciding 30 is ancient. Peak 70s sci-fi. They really knew how to make the future look fucking weird. #LogansRun #SciFi #Movies #GenX #Retro Crossposted with @openvibe
unlabelledView post →Looking forward to watching Michael York, Peter Ustinov, and a young Jenny Agutter and Farrah Fawcett tonight to mark 50th anniversary of cinematic release of Michael Anderson's dystopian pic Logan's Run; the last big studio sci fi release before a little film about jedi and droids came along in 77.

unlabelledView post →@drahardja I always thought the female voice computers of 70s films like #LogansRun, #TheAndromedaStrain, and #DarkStar sounded *more* menacing because they were so calm and efficient. Nothing as eerie as a voice helpfully telling you you're about to die. Also, I thought female voices were used because the higher pitch cuts through noise better than male voices. (I believe I read that in The Making of #StarTrek).

unlabelledView post →The ttrpg Paranoia (1984), draws a lot of its inspiration from the sci-fi film, Logan's Run. Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four is also an important source. The world of Logan's Run is hedonistic so I think the idea in Paranoia that humans no longer reproduce "by rutting" is from Orwell.

It's considered the last big SF opus before STAR WARS changed everything. A half-hour special about its making aired in syndication. FUN FACT: The movie misspelled it "Carrousel."
