unlabelledView post →it's not quite on the same level as MJ Bassett's previous fantasy epic (Solomon Kane!) but the new Red Sonja movie is certainly fun enough to warrant some attention when it hits VOD next week.
unlabelledView post →Netflix is making me watch SOLOMON KANE while I eat Is this a 'good' movie? Not really Is James Purefoy very handsome and serious? Yes, yes he is
unlabelledView post →The Solomon Kane Movie is Very Good, Actually
unlabelledView post →A great talent and greatly missed. Just one of those actors who generated a sense of total ability. I was recently talking about how much I like the 2009 SOLOMON KANE movie, and part of that is down to Postlethwaite's turn as the head of the family Kane encounters and becomes protective towards.
unlabelledView post →If you’re curious about seeing some old-fashioned Sword & Sorcery mayhem come and join us for a screening of #SolomonKane at the Bristol Megascreen on 16 August at 7. Here’s what, where and how: www.forbiddenworldsfilmfestival.co.uk/screenings/s...
unlabelledView post →:) Solomon Kane has been the basis of a movie, novels, short stories, comics, a table top roleplaying game, as well as the inspiration for several character imitations. Also, Howard sold those stories (Weird Tales). His stories have been reprinted many times. There has always been something there.
unlabelledView post →We can't ever have a proper Solomon Kane movie because Peter Cushing is no longer around to play him.
unlabelledView post →Now watching: ‘Solomon Kane’, dir. M.J. Bassett, 2009. A film that I've been meaning to get round to watching for years. A 50p charity shop copy was the nudge I needed. 🎬🎥
unlabelledView post →the weird 90s "movie based on old pulp characters" run that gave us The Phantom and the Shadow should also have given us a Solomon Kane starring Christopher Lambert
unlabelledView post →The lunchtime movie. I'll say the same thing I said when it first came out. It's not a very good Solomon Kane film, but it's an excellent sword & sorcery movie. Very much based in horror, with plenty of action and monsters.
unlabelledView post →Not for the first time, I wish the Solomon Kane movie had spawned sequels. Rereading THE RIGHT HAND OF DOOM and, dammit, this is some top notch eldritch swashbuckling shit. I suppose that Kane isn't well known was the primary problem, although the lumpy 3rd act CGI wasn't endearing either.
unlabelledView post →MJ Basset's "Solomon Kane" is easily the second best Robert E Howard adaptation so this has some potential as proper grimy B movie fare (laudatory, too many fantasy flicks try to be either LOTR or D&D)
unlabelledView post →I realize there's like twelve of us fans, but I'm pretty hyped for this. A) it's from the director of the Solomon Kane movie, my underrated GOAT and one of the last SnS films of its kind. B) it's gonna be R rated, filmed on real sets with chunky props etc. Would be neat to turn back the clock.
unlabelledView post →If you are looking for a jolly good jape of a movie with CGI monsters and lots of scenery chewing can I recommended Solomon Kane, that has come to Amazon Prime and is a vastly underrated piece of swashbuckle nonsense & fighting
unlabelledView post →Huh, there's a new Red Sonja movie coming. Trailer is... uninspiring. Oh, it's from the same director as Solomon Kane. Oh neat, I didn't realise Solomon Kane had a female director. *reads bio* She came out as trans in 2018!? Trans Directed Red Sonja? 10 out of 10 film, I will accept no argument.
unlabelledView post →Based on the movie, and the two individual stories if stumbled across, I'd assumed Solomon Kane entirely fought other Europeans. But nope, at least half his stories are him fucking around in Africa for no good reason, with an internal monologue that's like 60% phrenology.
unlabelledView post →Film score I listen to the most when working on Solomon Kane: Its combination of the tribal and the sacred, it's like it was made for it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQnK...
unlabelledView post →Out for One Week. Discover the Sword & Sorcery tale influenced by Robert E. Howard's Solomon Kane, the Vincent Price film WITCHFINDER GENERAL, the Ben Wheatley folk horror A FIELD IN ENGLAND, plus some play by that hack Billy Shakespeare! www.amazon.com/dp/B0F3PJ6447
unlabelledView post →Enjoyed Captain Kronos. One of the better Hammer films and better than most vampire/monster hunter films I've seen (esp that rubbish Solomon Kane film). Had a little bit of everything in just the right amount. I might even read the novelisation at some point which is in a box somewhere 📽️
unlabelledView post →Also, random aside, I love James Purefoy, sucks he didn't blow up much past this. The only other things I've gotten to see him in was the first Resident Evil movie, and then Solomon Kane.
unlabelledView post →Oh, before I forgot, interesting datum that might tickle @premeemohamed.com's antennae; M.J.Bassett is a big Michael Moorcock fan and, indeed, tried to slip an Eternal Champion reference into SOLOMON KANE, but the lawyers were like, "Nope." She's VERY keen to do a Moorcock movie, so fingers crossed.
unlabelledView post →I didn't realize there was a Solomon Kane movie! tbh I've never met anyone else who'd even read the stories
unlabelledView post →I'm so ready for this, it looks schlock in the same way Solomon Kane movie was, and this is by the same director, M.J. Basset. Sword & Sorcery movie by a trans director, yes please
unlabelledView post →MJ's movie version of Solomon Kane is freakin' great; looking forward to Red Sonja.
unlabelledView post →dangerously close to writing an essay on why 2009's Solomon Kane was the last good movie of the 1990s.
unlabelledView post →Share a movie you love, but others don't Solomon Kane!
unlabelledView post →Red Sonja (2025) official trailer. unlabelledView post →If you wanted to stick Nic Cage in a Solomon Kane movie, you should have just done that! Hell I would have gone to see it! And no, not that shit with James Purefoy I'm still mad about and don't want to speak of! #FrightClub
unlabelledView post →#NW James Purefoy in SOLOMON KANE. Haven't seen this in ages. One day I'll get round to reading Robert E Howard's original stories. #Actionsky #Filmsky
unlabelledView post →#NowWatching : SOLOMON KANE (2009)
unlabelledView post →I no joke watched like everything James Purefoy did for a long time solely based on how much he killed it as Mark Antony including that garbage Solomon Kane movie.
unlabelledView post →Yesssss (also I love the SOLOMON KANE movie and James Purefoy!) (and his hat)
unlabelledView post →cautiously excited! The director also did the Solomon Kane film, which I thought was pretty fun
unlabelledView post →Watched it for the first time last year. Great film, very little wasted screen time. Not quite Solomon Kane, but close enough (and better than the adapted film..)
unlabelledView post →having a girlfriend who suggests Solomon Kane for a movie night together really reminds me of how good things are.
unlabelledView post →My reaction was that it was a perfectly fine generic sword & sorcery movie but a terrible Red Sonja movie. That shouldn't be surprising as it was the same director that did the 2009 Solomon Kane movie, which was a decent S&S film but a terrible Solomon Kane adaptation.
unlabelledView post →Rewatched Solomon Kane (2009) Any one of the set pieces alone would have made for a good Kane story, but together, they're a bit much. It's a good looking movie, though, a lot of fun gothic and stylish touches. Purefoy's not who I'd imagine as Kane, but this isn't really Kane.
unlabelledView post →I liked it but manage your expectations. I had read a collection of Robert E Howard Solomon Kane stories, and IIRC the movie is a loose adaptation. It's enjoyable in the same way as I found the Jason Momoa Conan to be. It's pretty good popcorn fun.
unlabelledView post →This was a banger. Especially when you consider it only cost $17 million, a fraction of the budget of something like the 2011 Conan film, which cost $90 million. I'm not surprised because I liked her Solomon Kane film. That one had $45 million budget. Which this one had that budget.
unlabelledView post →Yeah it got zero promotion. It was shelved for 2 years and then was released to cinemas in Russia and for ONE DAY in cinemas in the US. It's Matilda Lutz from Revenge (which is excellent) and directed by MJ Bassett, who also directed the other REH movie, Solomon Kane.
unlabelledView post →SOLOMON KANE (2009) In Robert E. Howard's short stories, Solomon Kane has no backstory. In the film, he's got too damned much. It takes 30 minutes before we see the character doing Solomon Kane type stuff.* Seems like a mistake.
unlabelledView post →We are enormous fans of that Solomon Kane film AND the character. Eager to see the new Red Sonja movie, too.
unlabelledView post →As one of the roughly 3 people in the world who recognised that Solomon Kane was an excellent film, I will be watching this. I fully recognise she also directed Silent Hill Revelations. But if you think about it, that film didn't happen.
unlabelledView post →@zakiscorner.bsky.social @richardlnewby.bsky.social @pjcampbell.bsky.social now watching Solomon Kane (2009) I love love this movie! The short stories by Robert e Howard are also great!
unlabelledView post →4/31 WILDERNESS (2006), from trans director M.J. Bassett (SOLOMON KANE) comes this British survival horror film starring Toby Kebbell and the always great Sean Pertwee. A bit of Friday the 13th (the first one), a hint of Most Dangerous Game, and a smidge of Lord of the Flies, plus nasty gore.
unlabelledView post →Oh! MJ Bassett directed Solomon Kane too? Love that film. It's also awesome to see trans directors in the industry.
unlabelledView post →It was the same director as the 2009 Solomon Kane movie, which I feel the same way about-a decent, watchable action movie but a terrible Solomon Kane adaptation that has nothing of the feel or tone of the source material.
unlabelledView post →The key thing that the movie didn't get is that Solomon Kane is an oblivious, unlikeable asshole who, Gump/Navin-like, stumbles through the world fighting evil, while being a complete jerk. Instead, he's shoved into a generic mold. When adapting, celebrate what is special in the source material.
unlabelledView post →16 September 2009: Sword and sorcery film ‘Solomon Kane’, written and directed by M.J. Bassett, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. Rotten Tomatoes score: 70%* Letterboxd score: 2.8 (56%) (*Popcornmeter: 49%) #FilmSky #TodayAtTheMovies
unlabelledView post →The thing that gets me is that the director, M.J. Bassett also made the SOLOMON KANE (2012) movie, and...I really liked it! It's a dark, grisly, Edgelord spectacle and actually looks pretty great, has some solid action set pieces...he knows how to MAKE this kind of shit!
unlabelledView post →I personally loved the Mamoa Conan movie, and any movie that heads towards more R rated Robert E. Howard adaptations. I love the director of the Conan, Marcus Nispel. I think he made a very good film. I'm not as excited to see Red Sonja now, but I hope it's as good as the Solomon Kane movie.
unlabelledView post →Solomon Kane is an excellent little movie that should have a massive cult following but, strangely, not!
unlabelledView post →I really liked the SOLOMON KANE movie starring James Purefoy, for example. That was a really good example of how to do some sensational, exploitive, low budget TRASH with modern elements. It's a dark, bleak, and GRISLY film, making great use of old European castles and landscape.
unlabelledView post →Hiroshima Mon Amour!! I saw that while going through a real rough patch during college, damned thing blew me to smithereens. Cried all night. Love it. You saw Solomon Kane this month too! A movie I saw when it came out and was the only damned fan of for years. Finding its audience finally
unlabelledView post →Now it makes sense why it felt like the Solomon Kane film. I’m definitely going to check this out when it comes out. I’m all for sword and sorcery films/shows.
unlabelledView post →Currently watching. Solomon Kane might be my favorite REH creation, even over Conan. #filmsky
unlabelledView post →This is such a cool piece! The concept reminds me of a scene in the Solomon Kane movie a bit, and the owner is very lucky to have it. :)
unlabelledView post →I just asked my oldest if he knew when The Joker, K2SO, Robert Baratheon and The Vision were friends, and then remembered Solomon Kane was there too. I seem to remember the Solomon Kane movie was better than expected.
