I'm torn. I'm Brazilian, from Rio de Janeiro. Remember Elite Squad, that movie about police militarization? It's here. Our police is very brutal. Our police kills poor people left and right. It's very clear they work for the capital, not for the people. That never stopped us from protesting.

The Secret Agent: I have a screener and keep putting it off, because I'll be shocked if I don't love it. Kinda wanna watch it *after* everything else. Also, I have one final Mendonça film to go: 2023 doc Pictures of Ghosts on the Criterion Channel...and I've been a Moura fan since Elite Squad.

The Brazilian director who made that movie (he also directed Elite Squad 1 and 2, Narcos) and his fascistic copaganda work played a huge part in pushing the mainstream and pop culture in Brazil towards Bolsonaro

Max Payne 3 has nothing in common with the other two but borrows large portions of the plot from Elite Squad 2: Enemy Within which is an awesome movie.

It was most frustrating because I really liked Elite Squad, it was a brutal, blackly comic film that touched on the political fuckery that ends up creating paramilitary police squads like BOPE, so a more modern take on RoboCop's themes should have been right inside José Padihla's wheelhouse.

Elite Squad is a great film, but do not expect anything like the subtlety of The Secret Agent: it is far more explicit and violent. Wagner Moura is excellent there too, but in a completely different register: raw, explosive, and impossible to ignore.

No idea, it's from a tv report about the 2007 Elite Squad movie - on the report, one of the officers says the skull represents wisdom. Here at 3:40, the officer says "the skull... wisdom" and later he says that the knife on the skull represents "victory over death" - he says this within a few secs

Oh nice. Gonna read on those There's a theatrical release that was hurt by it too: Elite Squad: The Enemy Within (Tropa De Elite 2) The movie was leaked before it's actual release, and the hype was so strong, it clearly impacted sales So it seems piracy hurts new releases and never releases

I tried to remember if there were any movie with that kind of impact here in Brazil. And Elite Squad comes to mind. The message behind it looks obvious, but I truly believe it may have sparked this fantasy and obsession with the military, and using anything as justification against “the enemy”.

RE: Elite Squad, there’s like several levels of people, as you see in the replies on this trailer, who I think misunderstand the meaning of these films possibly some of the creators of them (as we see in Sheridan) Swofford, modified: “every cop film is a pro cop film, to an audience of cops”

Yes, I watched it. It's directed by the same director of a famous Brazilian film (Elite Squad). But I think they didn't give him free rein because this remake isn't as good as the originals were.

I didn’t love CIVIL WAR but I love Wagner Moura and it’s great to see him get a big juicy leading man part. Once again ELITE SQUAD: ENEMY WITHIN is a modern classic and a better film if you want to see actually see what a civil war waged by the police against their communities would look like.

As a brazilian, i can approve this movie as relatable As a brazilian, this movie i can agree with. I love the drama, the action parts are good. But best of all, THE POLICE. In Rio de Janeiro, there are favelas that have drugs. THE WHOLE COUNTRY IS RUN BY CORRUPTION AND GREED. If you are portuguese, download the app called Globo and read the news. There are a bunch of cartels, gangs, and worst of all: MAFIAS. They've spread to the U.S. In Brazil, you cant trust the police, nor the government.…

Movies that are clearly direct reactions to criticism of earlier movies are always interesting. Elite Squad: The Enemy Within goes against accusations of fascism in the first film by showing the main character uncovering corruption in the police force, to contrast with the first movie loving cops.

One of the best films that Brazil exported internationally. Being Portuguese, I believe that I know the realities of Brazil reasonably better than most foreigners. After all, historical and cultural ties connect the two countries to this day. For this reason, I am not at all surprised by the portrait that this film leaves us, about a world that rarely appears in the tourist magazines of Rio de Janeiro: the poor areas that, from the top of the hills, observe the noblest neighborhoods of the…

Decent movie with lots of strongly violent action. It stands up because it is staged in Rio and created by Brazilians. The plot is not very surprising but good enough.
