This game will not teach you kanji. It can help you in your studies though. Some of the mechanics in the game are not exactly well suited for a pleasant learning experience. It's difficult to look up information on what you already learned, there are no learning statistics, no dictionary, and most of the kanji information is just "dumped" on you. If you want to succeed in learning kanji, you have to develop your own system and habits. It took me around 32 hours to complete the game 100%. I…

I'm a self-learner, and already know hiragana and katakana well. I bought this game because I was struggling with kanji and tried to find a fun and effective way to get the basics. this game is not fun nor effective and I can't recommend it. here's why: Since getting this game, I found another way to learn kanji which helped me a lot. So, I have experienced this game both as a beginner and as a little more advanced student. both experiences were bad. That is because, the game covers the most…

I bought this thinking It oculd be helpful for my friend who is studying Japanese. But, to come to the point, it was not. Totally not. I would teach him Japanese by myself. Since I am Japanese, I think I'm not the right person to criticize the learning part, but I am sure that the combat system and the UI was not sophisticated at all. The story part was absolute vacuum unless you enjoy being in a lukewarm weeb community. It could have been better if it had used some kanji in the script or had…

Learn Japanese to Survive! Kanji Combat: A Review For the final(? maybe more to come?) game of the series, it tackles what I consider to be the hardest thing about Japanese, the kanji aspect. I can say that I had way more breaks in-between play sessions to help me with remembering in this game. It took me roughly 20 game sessions to beat the game, with each session roughly an hour long. and I will make this very clear, THIS GAME WILL BE EXTREMELY HARD JUST BY PLAYING IT AND THAT ALONE I…

First and foremost, this is an educational game. It teaches the Kanji taught in Grades 1 and 2 of Japanese schools. As such, there is a TON of repetition. It's to be expected as it's trying to get you to memorize and learn the Kanji. There is no sentence structure or grammar in this game. It just teaches the Kanji. You will need another way to learn sentence structure and grammar! If you don't know any Japanese, do NOT start with this game. Begin with Hiragana Battle and then Katakana War.…

The last part of the Japanese language learning trilogy. The first two offered to learn two alphabets of the Japanese language. This part introduces you to the kanji. Of course, absolutely all kanji cannot be learned for one game, but the most basic ones will be provided here, and this is 240 pieces. The gameplay and visual component are the same as in the first two parts. This is still the same JRPG with elements of a visual novel. However, due to the large volume of the study, the gameplay…

I write this review with an asterisk* Kanji Combat is an excellent tool for reviewing kanji when you already have a basic understanding of it, as well as the principles behind how it works. For those already decently initiated into the world of learning Japanese, this game stands as a great source of review and rounding out your knowledge. However, the reason why I cannot in good faith recommend this game is because of how it presents itself, and how it turns out in-game. The design issues I…

I bought this in the hopes of gaining some degree of Kanji understanding before moving to Japan where I reside now. Honestly, the memorization practices and explanation of kanji is really solid. If I could have a version of the game where it's just the kanji explanation along with the visual memorization component, I'd buy that in a heartbeat because that was actually really helpful in understanding some kanji. But this game suffers from WAY too much story. I sat down with my girlfriend…

Game freezes or shows black screem every 5-10 minutes... Totally unplayable. Also it is not possible to save progress often, so in addition to repetitive gameplay you have to replay same steps many times... it CAN be easily fixed, but DEVs abandoned this project long ago. So if you are struggling as I was, here is the solution: this is a common RPG maker bug where a variable can go negative. - navigate to www/js and open rpg_core.js in the game files, open with text editor - look for the line…

Not the most effective way to learn kanji. It's okay if you want an interesting review, but not good for much else. It's rote memorization with vague mnemonics. At least they teach the common on'yomi and kun'yomi, which is a step up from other programs and books I have looked at. In my experience the memory aids distract more than they help. I have logged a few hours on this game and most of that time was spent trying to find the word in question. I could think of the appropriate kanji or…

An okay learning tool, but a glaringly flawed, frustrating disappointment. Hiragana Battle and Katakana War are both miles better. My gripes don't lie in how it handles teaching, no; my gripes lie in the RPG system, believe it or not. You might think RPG systems would be irrelevant for an educational game, but they really impede the entire experience. My main complaints are thus: The enemies all scale to the level of the main character. Fine in concept, but only if you account for this…

I'll start off with criticism. Personally I enjoyed the previous two games and feel like those are great at introducing the concepts of hiragana and katakana. The thing is kana compared to many other aspects of Japanese is a relatively straightforward concept with not many exceptions to their established rules. Kanji, however, is an entirely different ball game. While kana may take you a few months to get used to, kanji takes years, and there are so many different obstacles when tackling kanji…

聯想法很不錯,設定有點離譜,適合外國人學習。 有點日語基礎的話 開頭過於簡單,目前還沒嘗試多少時間不好評價。 I hope the pronounciations of the Kanjis could be spelled as Hiragana or Katakana instead of English/Romaji.

This game takes memorising Kanji, normally one of the most gruelling and painful parts of learning Japanese, and makes it fun. Through repetition and typical RPG Maker combat, you are forced to memorise about 240 Kanji, which is about as much as a Japanese 1st or 2nd grader would know. This means that you only have to learn ten times more of that amount in order to perform basic functions in Japanese society. Unfortunately, the art and voice acting are actually really good this time around, so…

I give this thumbs up due to lack of alternatives and because you can get it really cheap on sale. This doesn't mean that the game part is any good or that the didactic concept is convincing - actually neither is the case. To summarize this: it's more of a quiz game with a JPRG theme. And of course you can't learn Japanese with it. Best you can hope for is to learn some Kanji. Anyway, if you played Hiragana and Katakana Wars, you know what to expect. You'll walk around with a party of four…

I was a big fan of the previous two games. I began studying Japanese with the prior two alongside duolingo and youtube videos, and noticed how effective the games were compared to duolingo in particular. This game just gets you to memorize kanji in a similar vein to the previous games, but I can't say that it's particularly effective since there is too much missing context. In isolation it seems nice, but when you're actually trying to construct sentences (which is natural after finishing the…

Also learning 1 word for each reading will help you better recall it. I wish there was a continuation to the game with even more Kanji, oh please creator Gods hear my prayer! :D

If you have already played the first two parts, this is more or less the same but with Kanji instead. As an addition to a Japanese course, certainly a nice learning aid. But not really suitable as a stand-alone game. The story and dialogs are very basic and not particularly motivating, the gameplay itself is rudimentary while the graphics and user interface could be done better by any hobby junior developer using RPG Maker.

The town building mechanic was a nice addition to give the player something besides just item upgrades to work towards. Also the visual novel style storytelling fits a lot more and overall feels more polished. Sadly thats about where the good ends. The third entry in the Learn Japanese To Survive series, this game is the best educational tool yet out of the series - but that isn't saying much, since the heaping of RPG and visual novel elements thrown into the mix distract from and artificially lengthen the learning experience via the hefty 12 hour campaign. In comparison to Katakana Wars, I think this installment was neither creative nor useful in learning kanji. Among the three writing systems in Japanese, kanji is definitely the most difficult and grueling. One character does not simply have one reading. As such, reusing the same mechanics as Katakana Wars seem detrimental almost. You now have this whole block of text for many different words and it can easily get confusing after a while. Instead of the convoluted multiple choice options, a…

I just wanted to practice the character meanings alone, without worrying about the sounds or hiragana/katakana, etc., since I'm learning Mandarin. So far I can match the English meaning for the characters easily and it doesn't require me to remember the Japanese pronunciations on their own (although they're still shown). I hardly remember the Japanese pronunciations of the Kanji which is understandable being an English speaker and I feel where this game actually shines is in visual memory, like using flashcards. The game is also structured well to help with memory and fun too.

Lessons are broken into approachable chunks, its easy to review previous material, each successful attack shows stroke order, and characters call out a different pronunciation each time.

This is an educational game intended to teach the Japanese Kanji Alphabet. Gameplay consists of a VN/JRPG where the monsters are characters that must be translated. While there's nobility in education, the implementation here is too poor to recommend. Pixel "art" has been used in some places, inexplicably jarring with the tolerable hand drawn manga style art in other places. Also, there's no fullscreen mode, despite this being published in 2018. Did they not pick that up in testing?…

I'd suggest writing and pronouncing everything as you work your way through the game. Studying after these three games with other grammar structure material is great for the N5-N1 tests and will be worth it if you're that die-hard about learning this language. When a steam sale shows up, get all three games PLUS the studying materials from the Kanji game.

While it does not substitute other methods of learning Kanji, it sure does help.

I also got the study guide, and flash card "DLC" I'm a little disappointed that the flash cards don't cover all of the kanji within the game, only 80 of the 240 different kanji are in it. as of writing this review I have not completed the game.
