neutral · AI labelView post →Mirror to this is that Kramer Vs. Kramer was the highest grossing film of 1979 and it’s impossible to imagine a film even remotely like that - nuanced domestic drama - being the most popular film of the year this side of 2000
neutral · AI labelView post →I'm pretty sure I revealed during this date that I thought Kramer vs Kramer was a horror film in which John Lithgow plays his own evil twin. He gently let me know I'm wrong, the film is not about that and John Lithgow isn't even in it

neutral · AI labelView post →My personal pick for favorite Meryl Streep movie as this was the first one I saw of her. Shortly after, I saw the intense Sophie's Choice, Out of Africa, Kramer vs. Kramer, Postcards from the Edge, and the Deer Hunter.
neutral · AI labelView post →Terrific piece. This film was one of the many revelations in the late 70s that spurred me forward toward a career in the field of motion pictures. I was 19. I must have seen it 10 times in the theater. KRAMER VS. KRAMER is a Robert Benton master class in the art of dramatic storytelling. RIP

neutral · AI labelView post →No movie could capture a father learning to parent better than Kramer vs Kramer. The end scene where Dustin Hoffman makes his son breakfast, efficiently, lovingly, and in complete silence and sadness of what they are expecting to happen, was masterful in its simplicity.
positive · AI labelView post →Age yourself with a film you saw in a cinema as a kid For a kid’s birthday party, a mom took a bunch of us out to see…KRAMER VS. KRAMER?? We all got very excited when we saw a lady’s bum and the mom knew she’d made a terrible mistake 😃

neutral · AI labelView post →Kramer vs Kramer I'm not sure why my divorced father thought taking his 7 and 10 y.o. to the theater to see a movie about a couple getting a divorce was a good idea.
neutral · AI labelView post →A movie about a bitter divorce and custody battle might win best picture, but it doesn’t entirely win us over, no matter how good Meryl Streep’s peformance is. A reactionary film that swept the Oscars? Quelle surprise, Hollywood. Episode 203 - Kramer vs. Kramer sites.libsyn.com/398906/episo...
negative · AI labelView post →Farewell to writer & director, Robert Benton. Best known probably for such Oscar winners as Kramer vs Kramer and Places of the Heart (and co-writing the first two Superman films), one of my favourites was his 1998 valentine to the classic private eye movie, Twilight (1998). shorturl.at/f2nf2

neutral · AI labelView post →The most obvious example of this is how Kramer Vs Kramer was the highest grossing film of 1979 and Marriage Story, very overtly the spiritual successor to that, went straight to Netflix without a cinematic release
neutral · AI labelView post →So RIP then Robert Duvall. A truly fantastic actor. Should have had an Oscar for his performance in The Great Santini; unfortunately, the hype surrounding Kramer Vs Kramer (a vastly inferior film IMO) ensured that the awards went to them. Too many great films to list.

If all this makes the movie sound schematic, well, it kind of is; it's a neat four-hander, and you can count the beats off almost as metronomically as the notes of Pachelbel's Canon (which the movie did a lot to re-popularize).

Can you imagine the # 2 movie this year being a weird, funny ensemble drama set in a mental institution? Or the # 1 movie being about a guy trying to raise his kid alone after his wife leaves them?

negative · AI labelView post →I think I may have liked it more than you, Mike. Reminded me of the sort of well-tooled, beautifully acted humanistic dramas ("Kramer Vs. Kramer," "Terms of Endearment") that used to be a H'wood mainstay. I personally think it's Cooper's best film (as director) to date.
neutral · AI labelView post →Loved it when it came out, although it didn't get much notice. Writer director Robert Benton also wrote and directed Places in the Heart. Another wonderful film. I am less a fan of his Kramer vs Kramer, in which his and Dustin Hoffman's treatment of Streep was appalling.
negative · AI labelView post →Kramer vs. Kramer is terrific, but for my money, Airplane should've won Best Picture of 1980. More laughs per second than any film. Eminently quotable, outrageous, relentless. Shirley, I am serious.
