Killing Time (Classic)

Action

Developer The 3DO Company

Killing Time is a first-person shooter video game developed by Studio 3DO. Originally an exclusive for their 3DO platform in 1995, it was later remade for the Windows and Macintosh platforms in 1996 by Logicware after the 3DO system was discontinued. On July 23, 2015, ZOOM Platform announced the release of an updated version of Killing Time exclusively for their store. The update work was done by Jordan Freeman… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

Talk about hidden gem. For a Doom-like that I had never heard of, which is in of itself quite the impressive thing, the quality of the game blew me away. And the fact that it runs so smoothly and nearly flawlessly on Windows 10 is just impressive. And don't bother looking for video reviews for this, because you'll be met with the inferior 3DO version. This ''port'' is the got-to ''port''. It has greatly improved graphics, the same beautiful soundtrack, and run very solidly on modern systems…

This is the most functional version of Killing Time you can find. The cutscenes work and the game doesn't freeze. It works 100% on Windows 10. The only thing the game still does is that the games music will still cease to functions when there is a lot of combat going on, so loud sounds like explosions will stop the music, unless you leave, and re enter the area you're in. Killing Time is worth checking out. A very under rated gem from the 90s obscured by more popular FPS like Doom.

This is quite probably the most ambitious and innovative early first person shooter that nobody has played. The story behind this game is about as convoluted as the gameplay itself, so bear with me. Originally The 3DO Company wanted a port of Doom, and the developer Art Data was supposed to make a port from the original source code since Id Software decided it wasn't going to do ports themselves for consoles after making one for Atari to release on Jaguar 64. Well, Art Data ended up being all…

This game is a disappointing relic of 90s gaming. Its clunky controls, dated graphics, and lack of originality make for a frustrating and forgettable experience. With uninspired gameplay and a lack of innovation, it's a title best avoided unless you can approach it with fond memories (nostalgia) or you're a glutton for punishment. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3258738548 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3238195952

This is the second FPS I played when I was young (Doom 2 was the first). This game was so scary back then. It took me 12h to complete it. This FPS is different from others as it has only one huge map. It is not a classical get the red/yellow/blue keys to complete the level. There is some short videos that reveal the story peace by peace. The weapon are great. Only drawback are the controls. But once you get use to it you'll almost forget about them. I finally finnished that game I started 23…

This game took me years to get up and running simply because it does not run well on modern systems out of the box; going from garbled graphics one year, no sound the next and then just refuses to boot after that - I had given up hope trying to get it up and running. But thanks to the wonderful work of the Killing Time community and the fan patch they have been updating for years; I can finally play and enjoy the game and I'll confidently say that this game is a real hidden if very flawed…

I love this game but does anyone know how I can fix the mouse movement issue? I find it unplayable like this. I found a workaround back in the 90's so I'm sure someone remembers. Still, it's an amazing game in my opinion so I won't fault it.

Works and runs well on Windows 10. Pretty impressive for its time with some fairly complex architecture and embedded videos. Not a bad game by any means, but the primitive neanderthal controls require JoytoKey and a controller to bring up to modern standards.

Killing Time is a somewhat forgotten '90's FPS that I am glad I could play through. With a fan patch and a guide when you get lost, it is a lot of fun to play and has a dark atmosphere that keeps you on edge with the music and strange monsters. Definitely a game about hunting for a bunch of items through several levels and blasting things along the way. Not the prettiest of the games at the time, but not bad for a smaller company game. The monster designs almost feel like whatever they could…

This is an old FPS from 90s. So controls are on level with that time. This game has however one fatal flaw. If you come in contact with wall, corner of wall, tree, piece of furniture you got "glued" to it! Its rather hard to explain, but this will drive you insane. Interiors are almost all narrow and winded passages and outdoors, there are damn trees everywhere. Other than that it would be OK old FPS. Its quite long, but this is in part because you will get lost very easily and map is near…

There's a gem buried in here somewhere, but you'll have to dig very deep to find it. TLDR: I would've like this game a lot more, if the level design gave better direction - Huge areas are fine if you're not forced to spend 10 - 20 minutes wandering about aimlessly, accomplishing almost nothing. Long but Did Read: I like it's isolated 1920's setting, as well as the serene but unsettling tone at the very beginning of the game - The game looked pretty good for it's time. The weapons are…

Awesome underrated horror FPS. That has just been removed from Steam for some reason? I'll turn this into a proper review when the game's available again and people will actually see it! I didn't actually play it for over a hundred hours. That was some bug that made Steam think it was "running" for days after I closed it. No really, I swear! DON'T look at me like that!

Right. This is by far the best version ive tried. It runs perfectly on Windows 10. I actually bought the GoG version aswel, but that has sound and screen flickering. This version works correctly. Dont expect to be able to change the controls to freelook with the mouse. This game was originally produced for the Phillips 3DO console, and was meant to be played with a controller. The mouse controls is the same, as if you played Doom 2 with a mouse.

Lots of people in reviews seem to have trouble running the game but it's run perfectly fine for me aside from FMV audio stuttering and music suddenly stopping sometimes. The pre mouselook shooter era, ah. For its era what stands out most is the fact that there's no levels, the entire island can be explored. Somewhat different from general open ended modern games too with the way that enemies and items won't respawn, when you come back you can even see their corpses still there. I like that a…

If you're looking for a good retro shooter, I'd recommend looking into another game. Even by the standards of the time this game came out, I'd still consider it quite a bad. First off, the level design is atrocious. Outdoor areas are cluttered with trees that block your line of sight and movement but don't stop attacks which makes fighting hitscan enemies (of which there's a lot, especially around the kennels and hunting lodge) obnoxious. Indoor areas generally consist of cramped corridor…

Good ideas, but its miserable to play. For one, there's far too much backtracking and walking around aimlessly, and when you do find an item required to advance (usually a key) there's never any indication as to what it's used for. So off you go checking every locked door in the game to find out whether the key works. The combat itself is rubbish too. The enemies are quite stupid, most are a lumbering melee sort or a hitscan gunman, but there are so many of them that you'll grow tired of mowing…

I completed Killing time a few years ago and it was an ok FPS. There's a lot of navigation to do (finding items, killing monsters, etc.) but the mouselook isn't great and jumping feels rather awkward... Buy it when it's discounted and/or if you like 90's FPS games.

First time player here. Never had a 3DO, but I'm generally interested in trying older games, and the FMV looks fun. After an hour of gameplay, I found it’s not a fun game. I think the main problem is shooting brings little excitement. The early enemies include mafia mobs, when I use dual pistols to shoot them in the face, they take the bullets like I shot them in the body, freeze a bit, but only go down after 5+ bullets. That feels weird for a human enemy. Then the puzzle part. This game…

Man, this is a rough play. I never played this game back in the day so I couldn't go into this with any kind of nostalgic value. But I did go into searching for an appreciation of the early days of FPS games. Instead what I found was several examples of how to give a bad name to an early genre. I was only able to tolerate this game for about an hour before turning it off but here is what I experienced in that hour: This game (or at least the beginning part that I played) is a whole MAZE.…

Works fine through steam on win10, have to use the desktop controller config though for my steam controller. Have set up the joy for movement and the right touchpad for looking around. Jump is oversensitive, one press on either 'A' key or right mouse does several jumps, have to be very light pressing it when platforming. UPDATE: Since yesterdays Steam update, don't need a desktop config for this anymore.

Brings bad good memories, works amazingly well on Windows 11, only issue is there's no mouse support, but you can set up your own keyboard settings. If you where fond of the 3DO release then get this, it's like going back to 1995/96. The jump animation is a bit weird same for crawling and like another review says, if you get to close to any object you become very slow, guess it's a game mechanic for further into the game. If everything is good this will be my first time finishing this.

I have been playing on the big screen with the steam controller config set for Keyboard and mouse and it runs surprisingly well on the steam controller for a 90s made FPS/Adventure game. The adventuring isn't terribly hard to figure out, the graphics work and I haven't come across any problems yet on windows 10. It's a pretty big game, and the enemies are definitely weird and spooky looking for a 90s FPS. I'm glad I found this instant gem for my collection I love or.

Killing Time is yet another clumsy game from the era of Doom clones that struggles to set itself apart, but it does a great job of building atmosphere to leave you tense and confused. The controls are rough, but the game is clearly designed around that. The story is also quite disappointing because of how little your character interacts with the world and events, but if you can be patient and deal with the jank, I think the game is worth your time.

Overall, I recommend this if you want the classic, unaltered version of this cool relic hybrid from the height of both FMV and FPS game styles. Still, it's a much better experience playing the remake Killing Time: Resurrected, which is also available on Steam - it's got massive quality of life improvements and the graphics are cleaned up without betraying the spirit and vibes of the original.

This game was so much better on The 3DO console 1995 than the PC remake. With cinematic video ghostly black and white characters talking to you as if you was in the story (3DO version), then again I was on a morphine drip from a bad accident for a few days while playing this game may have added another level to the game. Still when you play it, makes you feel like your a part of the storyline it was the first step up from the run and gun games that was out at it time.

Killing Time is a distinctive and experimental first-person shooter that occupies a unique place in the history of 1990s game design. Originally developed by The 3DO Company and later reintroduced to modern audiences on Steam through Ziggurat, the game stands apart from many of its contemporaries by blending shooter mechanics with adventure-style exploration, horror themes, and an unusually heavy emphasis on narrative presentation. Rather than chasing pure speed or reflex-based action, it…

Compared to the console release it’s basically a different game, except for the story told through FMV sequences converted into sprites – a pretty unique idea for the time. The game has atmosphere and originality, but it’s also clunky and frustrating. Worth a look only for hardcore 90s FPS fans. Pros: Unique story presentation (FMV as sprites). Great 1930s island…

While I would recommend this game I would issue a very stark word of caution: The control system is POTATO LEVEL JANKY!!! Seriously, trying to play with the keyboard and mouse will give you devil's delight!! Given the nature of the game this may well be intentional, but it does make things a heck of a lot harder when you're being shot at and struggling to avoid getting ravaged by monsters.
