And I think about Anthony Bourdain's episode of No Reservations in Tehran, where he met and ate with so many smart, lovely Iranians.
unlabelledView post →It Was Just an Accident is a film inspired by Jafar Panahi’s time in prison for speaking out against the Iranian government. “I sensed that I had to do something about the people who were still inside.” Should Panaji return to Iran he will face another year in prison. #JafarPanahi
unlabelledView post →I just watched the new Iranian movie “It Was Just an Accident” the other night. An extraordinary watch — about the aftermath of political/state repression. I’d have recommended it anyway, but especially now given what’s happening literally right now in Iran.

My three-way tie for best movie of 2025, having finally seen all contenders is: Sirat, The Secret Agent, and It Was Just An Accident. www.rogerebert.com/reviews/sira...

unlabelledView post →One of the screenwriters of the Iranian film "It Was Just an Accident" has been arrested. Sonny Bunch and Mona Charen talked about it here:
unlabelledView post →It Was Just An Accident is a brilliant movie from beginning to end. Just devastating, but also kind of hopeful. There is a lot of kindness in it. A good pairing with The Secret Agent, another unusual film. Both center those oppressed by systems and individuals, in life-affirming, honorable ways.
unlabelledView post →I write about Jafar Panahi’s It Was Just an Accident, which just won the Palme d’or at #Cannes2025 (!!). A phenomenal movie and incredibly deserving winner.
unlabelledView post →Jafar Panahi secretly filmed It Was Just An Accident INSIDE Iran with great personal risk to him and the actors. It can be done without doing slop. Go watch that incredible film and boycott this garbage.
unlabelledView post →It Was Just An Accident might be my favorite film of the year. And that’s saying something.

unlabelledView post →My hottest Oscars take is that y'all should watch the Best International Film nominees. It Was Just An Accident is the best movie I saw last year. Sirat rocked me. Sentimental Value glows, as does Secret Agent. They change what you think the medium can do.
unlabelledView post →Oscar-nominated Iranian film It Was Just an Accident is shockingly a dark comedy for most of the run time. For a film about whether or not one should kill their torturer, it's really funny and farcical. And hopeful. And devastating. Kind of brilliant.

unlabelledView post →His first film since being released from prison, Jafar Panahi packs his anger into a van for Palme d’Or winner "It Was Just An Accident." A furious comedy-drama about what it takes to not only live under authoritarianism, but to outlive it too. #Cannes2025 www.truthdig.com/articles/don...

unlabelledView post →Jafar Panahi's It Was Just An Accident probably cost less than the catering budget on bigger films, but outruns them in imagination. Dynamic yet modest, like a western or film noir. I could imagine James Stewart in the lead. Or John Garfield.

unlabelledView post →Jafar Panahi's It Was Just an Accident is a small-scale film that capably tackles a massive subject. My review: brieftake.com/it-was-just-...
unlabelledView post →Film recommendation: IT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT (Jafar Panahi, 2025). An Iranian film about an ex-prisoner who unexpectedly comes across his former torturer. It's moving, hugely complex, honest and truthful, and sometimes absurdly funny and it's a remarkable glimpse into contemporary Iran. I LOVED it.
unlabelledView post →It Was Just An Accident is somehow brutal/funny/sweet at the same time. I look forward to every Jafar Panahi movie so much.

unlabelledView post →IT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT, from Jafar Panahi. Interestingly shaggy movie about, of all things, vengeance. There were times when it dragged a little and maybe didn’t focus on the elements I found most interesting, but it’s a powerful story, well told.
unlabelledView post →IT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT is a stunning movie. Brilliant, gorgeous, funny, terrifying, sad, furious, gentle, and humane. I finished it hours ago and can't stop thinking about it.
unlabelledView post →I was listening to a movie podcast today, and they were doing their best of 2025. IT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT came up, and one of the hosts described it as a "metaphor for different attitudes about revenge." I'm not sure how it can be a metaphor for the thing it is literally about.
unlabelledView post →In my newsletter this week, I begged folks to check out a brave movie from a brave filmmaker: Jafar Panahi's IT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT. I hope you can track it down or watch it once it hits video on demand. www.thebulwark.com/p/what-the-n...
unlabelledView post →I don’t think I’ve been rattled by a movie this year as I was by Jafar Panahi’s scorching, devastating IT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT. The ending truly shook me, physically. It’s a movie I will be thinking about for the rest of the year and beyond.
