Independence Day
Strange phenomena surface around the globe. The skies ignite. Terror races through the world's major cities. As these extraordinary events unfold, it becomes increasingly clear that a force of incredible magnitude has arrived. Its mission: total annihilation over the Fourth of July weekend. The last hope to stop the destruction is an unlikely group of people united by fate and unimaginable circumstances. From TMDB

The theater timed it so the 4th title card appears on the screen as it hit midnight. For a moment everyone in that theater was out of control. Simple times.

unlabelledView post →I don't care what anyone says, Independence Day is a fun movie that I try to watch every year. It helps that Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum are both incredibly charming as the leads, and Bill Pullman is very likable.

I feel like right now, Do the Right Thing still has the most urgent & vital things to say about America, but my go-to is The Right Stuff, featuring Sam Shepard as Chuck Yeager in the goddamn hero shot of all time.

unlabelledView post →a Mary McDonnell film fest=never a bad idea. In the last few months I've watched or rewatched Passion Fish, Sneakers, Independence Day (a fun film with the big mistake of underusing MM criminally), Dances With Wolves. I'm a horror wuss but she's also great in House of Usher. Turns out she can act!!

unlabelledView post →Watched Independence Day (1996). It's amazing how well-structured this is. The conflict and stakes come together so quickly and so well that it feels like you're watching a historical event. Then someone talks and you go "oh, right, the 90's." Always a delight to spot a Harvey Fierstein role.
