Hammerwatch was one of the first PC games I ever owned and I have fond memories of it. This feels like a true remaster, improving on the original in some aspects and turning it into something closer to an ARPG without losing too much of the original's charm. A lot of the original's charm and cool features have been kept. Namely, for me: * The music, which filled me with nostalgia * The shaders and graphical effects (bloom, CRT curve, etc) * Statistics, so you can see your total steps * All…

It's really hard to give this a thumbs down. There's a lot of great new features here. It's clear that a ton of work was put into the new art and content. But there are game-breaking bugs for every campaign, some that have been in the game since launch, and some rough edges that are definitely worth calling out. Annoyances range from mild (the curvature filter is markedly worse in the Anniversary Edition compared to the original) to run-ending. For instance, A door required to progress is…

To whom it may concern, didn't really dig this game compared to the original hammerwatch, refunding. If you play on a controller and want the single stick move and aim like the original hammerwatch. Navigate to \steamapps\common\Hammerwatch Anniversary Edition\res then right click controls_default.cfg and edit. Change the following sections: First section(xbox controller): <map id="gp1,gp2,gp3,gp4" gamepad="true"> <vector id="gp_lth_v" delta="0.25">movedir</vector> <vector…

Absolutely stunning. It's not just a remaster - it's a complete remake. More puzzles, more enemies, more abilities AND 3 campaign's plus a tonne of other extra content make this a beautiful addition to the Hammerwatch series. I was going to get Hammerwatch 2 after playing through this for a refresher of the story - i did not expect to be confronted with this vast wealth of content. Oh, and they've the shaftlocke/desert campaigns (both from heroes of hammerwatch) more roguelike, with them…

This "remaster" is great. It is simply original Hammerwatch put in upgraded engine of Heroes of Hammerwatch. That means you can aim with your mouse, which is really great. There is no need to collect XP or levels, and you also don't need to grind so much. It contains: campaign from original Hammerwatch (Castle Hammerwatch), it's DLC (Sun Temple) and modified campaign from Heroes of Hammerwatch (Shaftlocke Tower with enchanced and larger floors), but unfortunately without it's DLCs. Class…

"Anniversary Edition" is technically a new game that bears strong resemblance to the original. If you like the old one, you'd like the remaster. Please, note, that the game is now designed for mouse controls and while it's a great feature for some (me included), it may be a dealbreaker for the others.

This is a rogue-like without death, choices or replay value. Game loop is killing things without rewards and opening doors in the right order. Wrong order breaks the whole game.

This is an exceptional remake of the first Hammerwatch game and it only benefits in every way for the work put into it : excellent visuals and sound, re-balanced effects and new content. Definitely pick this up if you're even slightly a fan of the series. In fact, if you get it as part of the bundle with HW2 you may find yourself more interested in this title among the two...

Nope, just nope. The original campaign is fine if not a bit worse. The Shaftlock campaign was designed by someone braindead, secrets are abhorrent, balance does not exist. Constant backtracking, grinding etc. It perfectly shows how heroes of hammerwatch sucked. In that regard it is perfect. To show you how utterly stupid it gets: I got progressively more pissed off as the time went on. I gave up when I went back to get secrets and stuff I missed when at was at the last act. While i am going to give the game a recommendation, i feel the need to give a few warnings first. It can be fun, but you need to know what you're getting into. While i do believe this is the superior version of the game, and it looks gorgeous and the framerate is so unbelievably smooth, it has major flaws that may or may not appeal to everyone. First, the game is extremely repetitive and low energy. If you are looking for a good ARPG or a dungeon crawler, this is a snoozefest. Its also really…

Strange- I loved the original game, but this anniversary edition I feel like I'm completely lost 90% of the time, switches are difficult to see, nothing is explained, confusing levels up/down, lots of endless wandering around. Even the options menu is confusing with it's red and yellow color scheme. Just stick with the original.

Wow, When you think it cannot get any worse Crackshell really proves you wrong. This game is essentially a cashgrab of the previous games along with additional "Where the ♥♥♥♥ do i go frustration" added in there. I noticed a pattern with the campaigns with castle hammerwatch being the best go to campaign of the whole bunch, Shaflocke tower being the a frustrating poorly put together of HoH's campaign. So many elements are just unexplainable and there to frustrate the player to no end at all.…

I'll switch to recommended when they fix the problems with Xbox controller inputs. I'm not about to recommend a game that the devs can't apparently be bothered fixing an issue that I'd assume to be rather minor to fix on their end that can have such an impact on the player's experience in over half a month after being alerted to it. And like hell am I going to go out and buy a Dualshock 2 controller for just one game.

This game was spectacular. Beat each campaign on the hardest difficulty and got all the achievements. (One achievement is bugged currently, but is getting fixed in next update). Though a bit of context, I played the original Hammerwatch for 500+ hours, Heroes of Hammerwatch for 1500+ and Hammerwatch 2 almost at 100. So I am pretty familiar with this game franchise. If you're coming from one of their other Hammerwatch Titles, this game is a bit different. It's a more concise, but still a full…

The Hammerwatch series really scratches an esoteric itch that's hard to describe. It has elements of games like Gauntlet, Diablo, top down Zelda, just to name a few influences. Hammerwatch 1 and Anniversary are much more Gauntlet influenced, where Hammerwatch 2 (my personal favorite) is a lot more ambitious going into full RPG territory complete with towns, dungeons, crafting, etc. Heroes of Hammerwatch on the other hand, is a rougelike spinoff series, with it's own sequel in the works.…

I've played a few of the four Hammerwatch titles (Hammerwatch 1, 2, HoH 1, and 2), and despite this being the company's first game, it's awful. The first map is irritating with many unexplained puzzles. The character progression is terrible, and the items are rubbish. The rewards after killing the bosses are a joke, with gray or green items, even on the final boss. The second map (the desert) is lame; it seems like every time they thought of something, they added it to the next map. The mining…

Coming from Heroes of Hammerwatch I would say this is way better. The progression is much more evident. The animations are much better and the camera isn't so zoomed out. Love this. sometimes can be stupidly frustrating, but the speed of progression can get you past those parts pretty fast.

Best hammer watching simulator on Steam. 10/10 would watch hammers again. In seriousness, this is a remake of the original Hammerwatch which was already in its own right quite a fantastic game that launched Crackshell's journey as a game company. A really fun dungeon crawler. The gameplay is good, the classes were interesting and the music was cool. Watch out 'cause it's hammer time. Some special info: Castle Hammerwatch campaign is the best one, while Shaftlocke Tower is the most detailed one... both of them are great. Sun Temple on the other hand has some crazy difficulty curve, it's unbalanced as hell and the mirrors catching you on fire all the time were awful. All in all I think it's a good game as 80% of it goes hard. Wish the Sun…

If you played the original, this plays like it, but it isn't anything like it. If you like one shot adventures, then sure, this is ok for you. The boss fights are for sure harder too. It's a one shot adventure with no towns, no sending gold and resources back down, you can get upgrades along the way, but its per adventure. Which that's ok, but I was hoping it was the first game remade with some upgrades. Thats not it at all. If you haven't played the first game, then I could recommend this…

A wonderfully fun return to the simplicity of the original Hammerwatch, but with a complete graphical update and collection of new features. This is not just a simple update, but a full remake with a lot of care put into updating every element of the game. The game includes three complete campaigns, each remade by hand to update the originals with new higher detail visuals and (in the case of the third) entirely re-imagine the experience in the style of the original Hammerwatch. This is a brilliant remaster, the cherry on top being the Shaftlocke Tower campaign which retells the story of HoH. If you have played any Hammerwatch game before you are going to appreciate how much detail has gone into worldbuilding and tying this one seamlessly into the franchise. Having revisited the old Hammerwatch again after playing this one I can also appreciate the enhanced overall visual clarity.

Perfectly fine. I'm saying "not recommended" because I personally enjoyed the original versions more, and think that if you're looking to pick between this game and regular Hammerwatch 1, you should go with the former, that said, there's a lot of additional features that this game has to offer, and those might be worth it to you. Still a very good experience, just less good than the original, so I'd personally recommend that instead. My biggest issue is the updated graphics are a lot harder to…

It´s cheap indeed, but not enjoyable, you are gonna spend a lot of time killing enemies yet their growth rate is beyond your possibility. The damage enemies done to you is insane, while you give them only scratches. The enemies are huge in number, and you got no allies, nothing I´m aware of. This game looks nice, but is extremely tedious to play. You basically holt LMB and stab your way through endless ammounts of the same mob types and wooden crates.. The game does not explain itself. Some of the most basic mechanics are never told to you and you're left wandering for hours until you figure it out. Example, on the Sun Temple level they tell you you need to give ore to the shopkeepers to upgrade them but when you talk to the shopkeepers there is no option to give them ore. That is because you need to put the ore in the basket next to them, not actually give the ore to them. I think this was either a huge oversight on an explanation or the…

The new Shaftlocke Tower campaign in particular is impressively long and has taken longer to beat than the other two campaigns put together. I was not a fan of the original version of Hammerwatch. It's a fun but very simplistic action game. Not much variety to the classes and no skill/build customisation. I would recommend playing in co-op with infinite lives enabled, as it can be a bit overwhelming in solo mode. Start with Castle Hammerwatch > Sun Temple > Shaftlocke Tower for the best experience. It took roughly 15 hours to complete all 3 campaigns, but I took my time and 100% explored each map so might be quicker in co-op.

Old-school gauntlet inspired dungeon crawler. Comes with 3 modules and player-driven content. The classic castle module can be completed in a handful of hours. Some one-shot-kill traps and enemies were such a pain that I thought about dropping the game, though. Luckily, upon starting a fresh run, you can not just adjust the difficulty, but also tweak it further by giving yourself unlimited lives, for examples. This saved the game for me, since I was looking for a more relaxed playthrough.…
