To fill in their absence, the filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania invites professional actresses and invents a unique cinema experience that will lift the veil on Olfa and her daughters' life stories. It mixes American buoyancy and joie de vivre with depression and suicide. A lovely, perky girl next door, Priscilla Lane, tries but doesn't succeed in saving a sickly soul.

Greer Garson is miscast as Lizzie Bennett, while Laurence Olivier's Darcy is dull. Just watch Four Daughters instead.

Mixed review as it abides by Western obsessions of Islam and Arab women—their bodies, travails, and the social violence they must be expunged from. Much like her previous film, FOUR DAUGHTERS, it's a searing, painful, and essential work that asks critical questions about how we must begin to confront such immense tragedy. It demands to be seen📽️

Four Daughters is a charming tale featuring a terrific film debut by my boy John Garfield. Love me some Eddie G. in Magic Bullet.
unlabelledView post →4 for 4! Wings, the 1st Best Picture winner, is a wonderful silent film. The aerial scenes alone are brilliant. I love Barefoot in the Park. Redford & Fonda are great, as is Mildred Natwick. Four Daughters was John Garfield's 1st film and even though it's a bit soap opera-ish, it's pretty good. ⬇️

unlabelledView post →My mother, born in 1927, could recite whole scenes from FOUR DAUGHTERS. I suspect she only saw the film once, in 1938, but John Garfield made such a lasting impression on her that she retained it all vividly 60 and 70 years later. It’s hard to convey what an absolute original he was at the time.
unlabelledView post →I love everything on this list (thread) so far except for this movie. I really felt this was overhyped. And it eclipsed far superior flicks from that year, like... FOUR DAUGHTERS. I haven't seen the new Kaurismäki yet, but I'm a huge fan.

It's unconventional, but I love their chemistry. Great music too!
