unlabelledView post →There seems to be three basic types of CRPG out there, you have the solo hero that does it all (Fallout, UnderRail), the ragtag group of four to six heroes who work together, have internal conflicts, and get a large story out of (Baldur's Gate, Divinity: Original Sin II), and there are the blobbers, which consists of a group of (usually) four party members in a box formation moving through a grid-based world and almost (not always as in Legend of Grimrock II) entirely set within a dungeon.…

Thinking of setting the one-shot (and possibly more) in the Forgotten Realms. Feels like the right setting to hook new players.
unlabelledView post →The biggest thing with these games is going to be, did you play them back in the day to get some form of nostalgia. If so, then you will prob get a kick out of these games. If not? It honestly feels just super clunky and slow. I gave it an honest attempt, but since I never played it before there was no nostalgia keeping me into it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TL; DR the Eye of the Beholder Trilogy is pretty great, even for me who first played them in 2022. It is short enough not to make any game drawn out (my playthrough took about 10 hours per game) while also having a lot of content including a whole short story in the manual of the third game. Fans of newer games such as Legend of Grimrock should find it easy to adjust to this trilogy. The Trilogy can be played entirely with the keyboard or mouse, or a mix of both. These games play through…

unlabelledView post →One couldn't help but notice that while the trailer was mostly dark horror, they worked in some 'sexy' horror and one wonders if this was an effort to communicate to the BG3 fans that this game will be BG3 levels of horny. 🤷♂️ But Rivellon is just not as interesting a setting as Forgotten Realms.

unlabelledView post →I hate that I'm ending up giving this a negative review, I mean I got it for almost free on sale. But there's just too much holding it back to enjoy. So I'm not old enough to have ever played the originals or know anyone that did, but I've done plenty of DnD. Unfortunately, I've only really dealt with 3, 3.5, and 5. So much of that knowledge is utterly useless here. But that's ultimately not even the real issue. I don't mind having to learn an even older version of DnD, but I'm not doing that…

unlabelledView post →This is a good article, but the way I see it, fantasy settings can be divided into two types: gold standard (most D&D and especially Forgotten Realms, Oblivion) and silver standard (Warhammer, Game of Thrones, First Law). The difference is that in the gold standard settings, no one shits.

unlabelledView post →I bought this for nostalgic reasons, but I shouldn't have. If you however, like old, first person maze games from the early 90's then this is for you. Currently I've only played through EOB1, which wasn't too bad, and a bit over half of EOB2, which had better events, though I don't see me continue on EOB2 or 3. What's wrong with these? Well, without the All Seeing Eye, the game is hard, giving you no information whatsoever about equipment and items you find. There is no map in game, though that…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have yet to beat a single one of these games, but I can already tell this is a quality release. Three classic games, plus the original manuals and cluebooks, plus an automapper with help/guide functionality, all in one neat package wrapped up with a little bow. For just 8,19€. It's stupid cheap and not worth waiting for a sale. That being said, the games and documentation are over 30 years old. Not only are you expected to read the manual (that's why it's there), you also need to know a…

It is our B-game for when folks can't all be there for the other game that is on the edge of being done. Worried that this game set in the Moonshae Isles might be darker than our run of Impossible Landscapes.
unlabelledView post →Last weekend, my daughter and son-in-law came over for my son's birthday. Over dinner, we discussed Baldur's Gate 3, and I mentioned that I've been playing D&D for over 35 years and Forgotten Realms is one of my favorite settings. Now they want me to DM a game for them 😊
unlabelledView post →These are just dos ports bundled with a freely available auto-mapper, all wrapped up in a nice launcher. The best part is seeing all the Jeff Easley art before playing. I suppose you could just load up a Pinterest board and stare at it for a few minutes before playing these games but this way is faster. Think of this collection as convenient way to have all the SSI DnD stuff under one roof with cloud saves.

unlabelledView post →I know more about Glorantha from building three characters than I have ever learned about the Forgotten Realms in a literal decade of playing 5E. I know not every game is going to so firmly seat you in its world, but damn, a genealogical life path generator is brilliant in terms of grounding.

unlabelledView post →SHORT REVIEW Eye of the Beholder I, II & III are a set of 3D first-person perspective Dungeon Crawlers from the early 90's based on the 2nd Edition AD&D rules set. Although I have recommended these games that recommendation does come with a fairly heavy set of caveats which I will detail later. PLOT: The three games each have their own plots which follow on from one another but as with most dungeon crawlers the plot doesn't feature that heavily in the games themselves. COMBAT: The combat…

Not because I need to play on Mac.. but because the original was not available on Mac, but was once announced as coming soon, and 11 year old me went into the computer store at the mall once a week for what seemed like an eternity asking if it had come in and the guy got so annoyed with me every time... How is it still not on…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I would normally give it a thumbs down, though Eye of the beholder 2 was one of my favorite games at the time (1992-1993) along with Ishar which is better. The reason is that it was sadistically confusing, like entering a labyrinth Daidalos designed. You needed to pay attention to the compass, to the repetitive corridors and turns, leave things in interjections like breadcrumb trails to understand where you move in circles, search the walls on the side for hidden buttons, and even draw on hand…

From the moment I entered the sewers in EOB I, the sounds and graphic got as hooked, as the first time I played it. Same goes for EOB II, when I entered the forest, and I recommend everybody to try these two brilliant games: They are entertaining and some of the puzzles will make yeah! when you find their solutions. EOB III is on the surface a kindred spirit, but once the first sounds reach your…

The first 2 games are ace, the third one dips in quality but it's still good, but I recommend to play the third one with the hintbook. All in all, this is gaming history and the way they released it here on steam is fantastic. Added on the All seeing…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Played through EOB1, and got most of the way through EOB2. But if you don't find the crystal hammer, you're screwed and the game cannot be finished. There is no mention of this required loot at all, so basically I'd CAREFULLY read the walkthrough if you're going to try and play this game. It's a pity. The gameplay itself is fun, but I'm not going to start over to play this through. Good game ruined by pointless one way valve, leaving a bitter taste in my mouth.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Westwood and by extension SNEG have weaponized my childhood against me. To this day I still think about Eye of the Beholder. This game is amazing, but it's also jank as hell. There are bugs in this game that stop working the moment you import your party into the next game. There are six classes: Cleric, Fighter, Mage, Paladin, Ranger and Thief. What are thieves for? They have a minor ability to pick locks, but if your lock picks break, you no longer have the ability to pick locks because…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →DOSBox versions of the originals. What more is there to say? These games still hold up today as some of the greatest ever made. From story line, to exploration, to player immersion. These games have it all. If you're willing to put yourself in the mindset to play them that is.
