Developer Frontier Developments

Elite Dangerous is an online space, trading, exploration and combat simulation game developed and published by Frontier Developments. The player commands a spaceship in a realistic 1:1 scale open-world representation of the Milky Way, with open-ended gameplay. Players can explore and engage with a procedurally generated galaxy, which includes around 400 billion star systems. The procedural system allows landing on… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

What people are saying

Mixed but leaning positive; praised for immersion, criticized for grind and pay-to-win.

Many players praise Elite Dangerous for its immersive space simulation, stunning visuals, and rewarding long-term progression. One player with 81 hours notes it surprised them, calling it a 'marathon, not a sprint' that is '100% satisfying to overcome the frustratingly steep learning curve.' [3][7]

However, critics highlight a steep learning curve, repetitive grind, and recent pay-to-win monetization. One player with 5000 hours calls the developer 'terrible and lazy,' while another warns the game has become 'pay to win' with a best-in-slot upgrade paywalled behind $30. [28][29]

Oh Elite Dangerous... you held such promise, once! This game is a lot of things in 2026. It's still a procedurally generated "simulation" of the Milky Way Galaxy. It has a lot of ships, and they look neat and sound neater. But what were once a set of fairly balanced ships that you could reasonably purchase and outift with in-game currency have since given way to a handful of all-upside and no-downside power creep ships that are initally paywalled with real-cash "micro" transactions a la Star…

Elite: Dangerous is such a fascinating game. Nowhere else have I seen such a dedicated and hard-working community coupled with such a terrible and lazy developer. 10 years of Elite with countless community tools, out of game groups and networking, dedicated information gathering software all to provide a QOL to the players that the devs have never even attempted to provide. Bugs take years to get fixed (if ever), the pace of updates is a new ship every few months with almost no gameplay…

Buyer beware! The developers have announced the first truly pay to win monetization for the game. They've been reaching for players' wallets more and more recently, but until now it's always been pay for early access. With this new update, a best in slot upgrade has been paywalled behind a whopping $30 price tag with no stated plans for a free release at a later date. If there is to be a future for Elite Dangerous, the community needs to be loud and clear that this is one step too far! Keep…

I'm not far away from giving this game a positive review. I've certainly played enough hours. The foundations of the game's ships are some of the best that space sims have to offer. The ships feel and sound incredible. But, as common as the sentiment might be, I feel it's important to talk about the game's depth, because I don't really see this particular perspective discussed enough. At a certain point, the basic novelty wears off and you see the underlying system more clearly. Pretty…

Game is 10/10 for space exploration and space sim. Dogfighting and other content is really good, you can be almost anything you want in the game, space trucker, ace pilot, mining rig, alien hunter. Checks all the marks, and normally I would be giving it a thumbs up.... EXCEPT for one thing, I bought the game along time ago, before 'ARX' was a thing. I bought the "ALL ACCESS PASS" which claimed to include ALL DIGITAL CONTENT, PRESENT AND FUTURE, AND INCLUDED ALL EARLY ACCESS TO SAID CONTENT. It…

I've put an absurd number of hours into Elite Dangerous over the years about 1,552 hours at this point not counting the thousands of hours I put on the PS4 version back in the day, which is honestly a little ridiculous when I stop and think about it. In that time I've tried pretty much everything the game has to offer: mining, trading, bounty hunting, PvP, exploration, BGS work, Powerplay, squadrons, community goals… the whole list. One thing Elite absolutely nails is the sense of scale. The…

I left Elite Dangerous about eight years ago because of engineering. What should have been an optional progression system became a mandatory grind that turned ship building into a second job instead of something fun. I recently decided to give the game another chance, hoping years of updates had addressed those problems. Instead, I found that nearly everything about the game feels like trying to run a footrace underwater. Engineering is still effectively mandatory if you want to participate…

Title: 81 hours in and I finally get it Rating: Recommended Hours Played: 81.0 hrs I am 54 years old. I have been playing video games since the late 70s. I have seen every space game come and go, from Elite on the BBC Micro to Star Citizen's never-ending crowdfunding campaign. So when I say this game surprised me, I mean it. I gave this game an honest try but I quickly came to the realization that this is yet another soulless husk of unrealized potential. The initial wow effect doesn't last, and is quickly replaced by boring repetitive grind, copy/pasted content, and meaningless hamster wheel. Coming from EVE, the complexity and self-taught onboarding was not an issue for me. It's the lack of purpose behind each major components of the game. The immersion is great, but once you completed a few missions, explored a…

6.5k hours later I guess I can finally write a review. It all started somewhere around autumn 2020 when Elite Dangerous was free on Epic Games. I picked it up with zero expectations. Just another free game to try, maybe spend a few evenings on and forget about. Instead, I’ve been stuck here ever since. At the beginning I had no idea what I was doing. Docking felt like a boss fight, every jump felt risky, and making a few thousand credits actually felt like progress. It was slow, confusing,…

Look, I'll echo some of the problems up front - it has a learning cliff instead of a learning curve, certain third-party tools are all-but essential, and at the end of the day it's a mile wide and an inch deep. There's maybe at best a dozen gameplay loops to put time into, and many of them feel repetitive - not to mention the grinds to unlock Engineers, Guardian tech, and getting Credits. However, there's no other game that will give you *our* galaxy in this kind of personal detail. There's…

I don't know how I managed to sink 500+ hours into this one already, so I guess I must have enjoyed it. I like it, I'm leaving a positive review, but with a lot of caveats since this type of gameplay is definitely a niche taste. Welcome to the literal entirety of the Milky Way galaxy. The community has successfully explored about 0.06% of the simulated galaxy since FDev's servers somehow have enough server space to simulate potentially 100 billion stars in the galaxy and travelling more than,…

A polished game unlike Star Citizen. A space sim of some actual complexity unlike No Man's Sky. I still remember the wonder I felt the first time I launched into space, jumping from system to system, staring at the full explorable galaxy map, and setting off on long voyages into the vast unknown. I played as a hauler, moving goods from one location to another. It was simple, but deeply fulfilling. Really? Now they require CD-Keys linked to their account. Now they have a launcher that doesn't work and gets stuck. I bought this game early on and was able to play just fine. I came back now to try it again and I can't play because of all of this account and CD-Keys crap. I guess they really don't want you to buy any future games since it would be easier to not buy it than to buy it.

I love Elite Dangerous, but I can't recommend it to casual players that like to use a variety of controllers to enhance their immersion. You can pilot spacecraft across an enormous galaxy, engage in space combat, land on planets, drive surface vehicles, and leave your ship entirely for on-foot gameplay. Few games offer this combination of scale, freedom, and different ways to experience their world. It is exactly the kind of game that makes me want to build a cockpit around it: joysticks,…

Much of the disdain and whining in these negative reviews comes from 1 thing: they want an arcade experience. This is not an arcade experience. This is a space sim. A really good one. This isn't a, "tell me a story and hold my hand" game. No. This is a game where you need to invest some time. It gets better once you learn the controls or take the time to map them how you like. Want a better experience? Use a controller with keyboard backup. Want an amazing experience? Try it with a HOTAS. Or…

The game gives you an enormous amount of systems, menus, controls, and mechanics, but does a poor job of explaining how they actually work. Besides the cool spaceship combat mechanics, the game still lacks proper quality-of-life improvements in the UI, such as sensible search mechanisms, filters, etc...
