I'm not sure why straight up scifi has a hard time in film animation, but when Elio underperformed out of the gate, it's what I ascribed that to, not the "original IP" thing. If I were greenlighting scifi animation, I'd either want more hooks (monsters, etc) or a marketing plan out of the gate.
