I loved him, and Ian McNeice, as droll government agents Pendleton & Harcourt in Edge of Darkness, the brilliant BBC eco-thriller. They were a great double act. If you can, watch it.

unlabelledView post →Wow. @tcmtv.bsky.social continues to beat the drum. Just a few minutes ago, EDGE OF DARKNESS started... a brutal film about the occupation/resistance in Norway, starring Errol Flynn, directed by the great Lewis Milestone. It's on my list of "films made when the outcome of WW2 was still uncertain."
unlabelledView post →Remembering Ann Sheridan, born on today's date in 1915. She was fabulous in every film she was in; some of my favorites are Nora Prentiss, Kings Row, They Drive By Night, and Edge of Darkness. What about you?
unlabelledView post →One movie a day for 365 days. 88/365: Edge of Darkness. Flynn and Sheridan lead the Norwegian resistance in a small fishermen's village against the Nazis. Both stars step back in favor of serious, compelling drama: actors embodying human beings. No oncoming cavalry here.

unlabelledView post →I watched Edge of Darkness (series), and I watched Edge of Darkness (film). In the film, Mel Gibson's Craven doesn't find the vibrator. And that's the problem. There's none of those odd unexpected moments in the film. They ruined it & turned it into a great thriller...

unlabelledView post →WOW! I just watched a movie last week (Turner Classic Movies were having a day of anti-Nazi movies, maybe anti-current regime? 😏) and showed Edge Of Darkness about the Norwegian resistance in the town of Trollnes. They kept calling the spies or Nazi sympathizers, “ Quislings” - now I know! 😱

unlabelledView post →Just finished watching "Edge Of Darkness" on TCM, a WW2 film wherein Nazis try to take over a small fishing village in Norway. They're stopped through the actions of every single person in the town, lead by Errol Flynn. The Democrats need an Errol Flynn right now.

So far they have run Confessions of a Nazi Spy, The Mortal Storm (a very appropriate film for these times), and right now Chaplin's masterpiece, The Great Dictator. Coming up are The Seventh Cross, Edge of Darkness, and Background To Danger.

unlabelledView post →In the series of things I meant to watch years ago but never did, I watched The Constant Gardener last night. Was good. Hints of Edge of Darkness about it. Didn’t have the unhinged element of that but pretty bleak nonetheless. More film reviews as I have them.
unlabelledView post →2) It's set in 1992, and sees ordinary working people grappling with the Cold War's deadly legacies. In movie/TV terms, it's very clearly influenced by Session 9, Edge of Darkness (the series, not the awful film), Death Line, and The Girl With All the Gifts.
unlabelledView post →It was thirteen years of grafting at the TV and grumble coalface before that and acclaimed as it is, Edge of Darkness was still just a British telly series, not a Hollywood film. He'd only done three Hollywood feature films between EoD and Goldeneye, all of them consigned to DTV obscurity.
unlabelledView post →Happy 75th Birthday to Ian McNeice. English film and television actor. On television, he has played government agent Harcourt in the 1985 television series Edge of Darkness, Bert Large in the comedy-drama Doc Martin, the Newsreader in historical drama Rome, and Winston Churchill in Doctor Who.
unlabelledView post →Drama that is repeatable is often down to production considerations. You can reshow Tinker Tailor and Edge of Darkness and the Ghost Stories For Christmas because drama=film. And you can reshow The Good Life and Dads Army, because we accept comedy has studio VT in it.
unlabelledView post →That seems to be the lesson of Edge of Darkness. But like the old doctor in that movie, and like John Brown in reality, someone has to get the MFing ball rolling. I'd ask who the leader is in this cluster fuck, but I guess a real leader is underground. And so we wait. Too long?
unlabelledView post →Watching 'Edge of Darkness' again. It could make a wonderful thriller film too, but dear lord the Mel Gibson version isn't it.
