The Mission
When a Spanish Jesuit goes into the South American wilderness to build a mission in the hope of converting the Indians of the region, a slave hunter is converted and joins his mission. When Spain sells the colony to Portugal, they are forced to defend all they have built against the Portuguese aggressors. From TMDB

Film is about visuals and sound, after all, and because Blue doesn't utilize its medium to its full potential, it's a failure, unlike, say, Mission Impossible III. Jarman is not doing the work.

unlabelledView post →The Mission Impossible movie franchise has been going for so long that there was an N64 game based on it. Which feels like the modern version of that "a samurai could have faxed Abraham Lincoln" meme

unlabelledView post →A ton of good stuff this year but this is the stuff that became immediate favorite. Especially the Female Prisoner Scorpion series (Jailhouse 41 is spellbinding) and a few Johnnie To blindspots, The Mission being in conversation for greatest movie ever made
unlabelledView post →I at least find Cruise's movies entertaining, like all the Mission Impossibles and Top Gun: Maverick, etc. The last Wahlberg movie I wanted to watch was Boogie Nights.
unlabelledView post →The Fast and Furious franchise is older than ICE. The Mission Impossible film series is older than ice. Hell, the Harry Potter film series is older than ICE. They can easily be abolished.
unlabelledView post →The Mission (1986) is a really beautiful, Palme d'Or-winning movie, an incredible performance from both Irons and De Niro. A movie that truly believes itself to be a liberal tale of anticolonialism, but still holds a subtle, totally rancid view of the basic humanity of colonised peoples
unlabelledView post →The Mission Impossible film franchise is like travelling through the history of tech. It starts with floppy disks and early web 1.0 usenet groups and ends with a rogue AI.
unlabelledView post →The 1986 critically acclaimed film The Mission won the Cannes Palme d’Or in 1986 and the Oscar for Best Cinematography in 1987 It depicts a prescient moment just before the industrial revolution started following the Treaty of Madrid in 1750. This is a powerful scene (without spoilers)
unlabelledView post →#NowWatching THE MISSION (1986). Director: Roland Joffe. Jeremy Irons, Robert DeNiro. It's been a minute since I've seen this Best Picture Oscar nominee & Cannes Palme d'Or winner...but I've never forgotten its gorgeous cinematography & Ennio Morricone's world-class score. #filmsky 📽
unlabelledView post →Mario and Peach's light show in the Galaxy movie coincidentally took heavy inspiration from the lost anime sequel It of the 1986 Mario movie, called Super Mario Bros: The Mission into Outer Space (スーパーマリオブラザーズ:宇宙への大冒険). 💫
unlabelledView post →I love the Mission: Impossible movies despite the plot of every film being “this tech thing is God and God is going to kill us all unless Tom Cruise commits hari Kari”
unlabelledView post →Loads of people here mentioning Fury Road (and I agree), but I didn't see any mention of the Mission: Impossible films, which is insane to me. Ghost Protocol, Rogue Nation and Fallout in particular are all stacked with some of the best action scenes ever put to film, IMO.
unlabelledView post →Today I was able to grow my Ennio Morricone movie score #vinyl collection a little with the 1986 soundtrack to The Mission to go along with “A Fistful of Dollars and For A Few Dollars More” it’s a little crackly but still sounds great.
unlabelledView post →Getting every single one of my friends to watch this movie which single-handedly restored my excitement for today's filmmaking and my hopes and dreams for art publishing in general, super lowkey, no pressure (Pater Noster and the Mission of Light, 2024)
unlabelledView post →Belatedly watching the Mission Impossible series. The tonal shift— the different vibes, as the kids say— between Act 3 of the first movie and the So Very John Woo opening of the second is *really* striking. The flirting-via-car-crash with Thandie Newton is just nothing like the first movie.
unlabelledView post →My favorite thing about the Mission Impossible movies is Ethan Hunt is canonically 60 years old in them based on the opening scene in the most recent movie.
unlabelledView post →Director Roland Joffé’s historical drama ‘The Mission’ starring Robert De Niro, Jeremy Irons, Aidan Quinn, and Liam Neeson premiered at the Cannes Film Festival forty years ago this week ⛪️ ⛓️ ⚔️ #OTD
unlabelledView post →The women in the Mission Impossible movies should take me out in all the ways that Ethan Hunt's team got killed in the first movie, sequentially or serially, whatever works for them.
unlabelledView post →I’m finally watching all the Mission Impossible movies in order, pretty much for the first time. I saw the first one a million years ago and remember almost nothing. Except thinking “what a cool team! I can’t wait to spend the movie with Emilio Estavez and Kristen Scott Thomas!” lolol
unlabelledView post →in my head it's the Mission Impossible bathroom fight scene or the bathroom scene from the tom cruise jack reacher movie
unlabelledView post →Mark Rydell has passed at 97. Among many other things he directed "The Mission" my favorite episode of GUNSMOKE. Gritty, uncompromising w/ complex script by Richard Carr. Jim Davis, Warren Oates, Steve Ihnat head great cast. Rydell stages the action like he’s shooting a movie, which he later would.

unlabelledView post →Two years ago, there was a fun installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise called "Mission: Impossible--Dead Reckoning, Part I." The new MI film is called "Mission: Impossible--The Final Reckoning." You're forgiven in advance if you think somehow you missed "Part II."

unlabelledView post →Been catching up on the Mission Impossible movies thanks to a beloved film podcast of mine and I’m shocked to report that I’m now fully M:I-pilled. These movies are good as hell — who knew?

unlabelledView post →THE MISSION Dir: Roland Joffé 1986 #NowWatching A breathtakingly shot film. Both incredible and incredibly sad. An exquisite score by Ennio Morricone.
unlabelledView post →Popping up on the Channel 4 player in the UK, Roland Joffe's The Mission is a striking movie about corruption, religion and survival. Robert De Niro, Jeremy Irons, Aidan Quinn, Liam Neeson and Ray McAnally star; Ennio Morricone's score is truly sublime. 4 out of 5. film-authority.com/2026/07/02/t...

unlabelledView post →I realized today that The Color of Money turns 40 in a few weeks; Newman was 61 when that film came out. When Tom Cruise was 61 (in 2023), he was promoting the Mission: Impossible film where he sailed off a cliff on a motorcycle.
