Not sure why really -- was probably something like "games do it wrong". Anyway, Graham emailed me back then and asked me to write for his new game. Here's that game!
unlabelledView post →if you've never played HSR: the entire game up till 2.3 makes it a point that the East India Company (the IPC) are ontologically evil vultures that will devour everything for profit, and 2.3 turns around and goes "ah, the East India Company having a stake in the West Indies is good!" uncritically
unlabelledView post →My choice of topic was mostly because I was trying to think about how to design a game about the East India Company but wanted to choose a smaller test case. I also didn’t know much about the Opium Wars and didn’t know why there wasn’t another game on the subject.
unlabelledView post →I JUST LEARNED THAT THERE'S A BOARD GAME WHERE YOU PLAY THE EAST INDIA COMPANY??? absolutely perfect. no notes whatsoever. white people will literally gamify their oppression of others and call it "empathy building" when anyone challenges them
unlabelledView post →In 1839, during the early days of The Great Game (between England and Tsarist Russia), the British East India Company invaded Afghanistan and deposed the popular leader Dost Muhammad Khan to put the British puppet the exiled king Shah Shuja on the throne. +
unlabelledView post →Funny enough, that cooperative competitive schtick is the heart of the board game John Company. And it turns out, it's a really good way to model how the evil nightmare of the British East India Company worked.
unlabelledView post →I could see Assassin’s Creed doing another Black Flag-type iteration centered around East Asia (Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Philippines), or be super on the nose with the East India Company and have a full blown Indian adventure (The AC Chronicles game is in this time, but let’s not count it)
unlabelledView post →John Company Second Edition (2022, Wehrlegig) It's a *heavy* SIM of the East India Company in 18th-19th C. Challenging topic handled with care. Really incredible detail and complexity. #boardgame
unlabelledView post →Trump’s foreign policy isn’t isolationist — it’s empire dressed as business. From Greenland to Gaza to Ukraine, he’s playing the long game: land, energy, leverage. This is East India Company logic for a new age. #Trump #ModernEmpire #NetworkPower

unlabelledView post →There's so many. If you go back to the beginning, the series on the East India Company, the series on the Great Game in Afghanistan, the Ottomans and the authors they interview, some serious heavyweights.
unlabelledView post →39) John Company: speaking of delightfully amoral, here's a fun game about being the East India Company during the British Raj! Yes, you and the other noble failsons around the table are gonna extract as much wealth as you can from India and the game is very clear: you're all shits!
unlabelledView post →I'm torn between playing a Treasure Planet game or playing a steampunk game where we take on the East India Company.
unlabelledView post →An entirely appropriate name for a game about managing the Dutch East India Company.
unlabelledView post →"Vines & Wines" (basically Viticulture: The Card Game) is ready to pitch - I've been dropping sell sheets with publishers. "Sky Merchants of Tora" is a streamlined retheming of my pickup-and-deliver "East India Company" - plays nicely but still needs development.
unlabelledView post →The sad thing is that John Company, a game that really digs in to the operations of the British East India Company, is probably too heavy to get on most casual tables.
unlabelledView post →Sidebar: I would kill for a FPS AAA space colonising game that isn't a sodding Western. Someone do the East India Company as a setting! That would be so nasty you would barely need alien monsters.
unlabelledView post →I should be sleeping. Instead, I'm thinking about the absolutely brilliant board game "John Company," where the goal is to extract as much personal wealth from the British East India Company (colloquially the eponymous John Company) even if doing so causes the company to collapse.
unlabelledView post →"Liar's Dice is an old game. I knew that when it showed up in the Pirates of the Carribean movie but I didn't know if it were one of those old games that meant "grandparents" old or "East India Company" old or "Crusades" old or even older than that. "Roman Empire" old...and, holy cow, IT’S AWESOME."
unlabelledView post →IIUC "The Great Game" was originally coined to describe efforts to stop Russia meddling with the British (esp East India Company) pillaging & control of India. Afghanistan was thought a good barrier. Again IIUC, Iran is a different chapter of reprehensible meddling.
unlabelledView post →I read a great review of John Company, a game based on the history of the British East India Company, where the author said that the first group he played it with refused to play it again as the issues raised had effected them too deeply.
unlabelledView post →How about an event? bsky.app/profile/nbsp... An RPG overlay (?) of the thought provoking game John Company 2E. I don't know how you can dive into the headspace of the East India Company without tarnishing your soul, but maybe that's the point & I know Cole will have approached this deliberately.

unlabelledView post →Well there's collecting in this one. Pretty good game even if the submarine is only available if you go with the fantasy Dutch East India Company. youtu.be/W63cZxreR7g?...
unlabelledView post →Recently played the board game John Company, which is broadly "do extractive imperialism to India by running the East India Company, but it isn't like you ever sit down and plan it, it just sort of happens".
unlabelledView post →British/Euro Royals started late being the Adamic line-age.. Other being the Noah line-age.. Roman used to rule Britain.. then they entered the game with slavery on all sides and the East India Company.. 2 brothers.. 2 factions Atlantis/Lemuria.. indirectly divided but 2 brothers were Lemurians..

unlabelledView post →There's a web browser game where you can do things like stop the East India Company or prevent the development of gunpowder.
unlabelledView post →OBRA DINN MENTIONED the best 10 hours you can spend being an insurance officer for the East India Company genuinely fantastic game with details you wouldn't even think to look at before they clicked the typesetting jingle is engraved into my ears
unlabelledView post →Does this doc www.unqualified-reservations.org/pdfs/patchwo... , to which Musks, Vances, Thiels seem to make reference, advocate return to gov. by East India Company and similar? And do you know someone at U of C who could describe the game of words in it since the doc is apparently influential?
unlabelledView post →I love how my choices of factions in this game essentially boil down to "Indigenous Island Culture", The "East India Company", or "Imperial Spain" who happen to be a very distant offshoot the Indigenous culture and now are just Imperial warmongers out for conquest.
unlabelledView post →I learned even more about the East India Company from this insightful review of “John Company” from SDSU: youtu.be/ykrqCX2_mhU?...
