I will give you all the only review you will ever need of this game. Now, read carefully. It plays like a 2D souls game, yes. It feels clunky movement wise as opposed to majority of games that fits this genre, yes. Why should you play it? Why should you ever decide to experience this over other games in this genre? Well, the answer is surprisingly simple yet inherently complex. Devotion. Yes, Devotion. That energy, that vigor, stamina, willpower that makes us decide to move rather than to…

Cool graphics but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ quality of life is basically non existent here. You have to select your gear EVERYTIME you go into the dungeon! Why not just automatically use what you last took? Teleporting is also restricted to just one active Shrine. Just stretches revisiting old areas unnecessarily. Also unsure which room this door leads to? Oops was it the wrong one? Well better restart the run and hope the active teleporter isnt too far, since going back into a previous room is not a thing.…

might actually be good, but the control scheme is pretty awful and not having an option to change it in a modern game is enough for a "do not recommend". Normally I don't mind most control schemes, but the defaults are especially bad in this game. If you don't mind bad control schemes, or learning them, ignore this review. But if you care about the bare minimum QOL of being able to change the controls in a modern game, then I'd prolly stay away.

Review Dark Devotion is unbearable. There are excruciating problems with this thing. And I will be very, very vocal about it below, but trust me, I make no exaggerations when I state how awful it is. The Drawbacks YOU. CANNOT. JUMP. Yeah! This is a game, a platformer, with PLATFORMS, but you cannot jump. Am I crazy? Or is this stupidly absurd? I would like to meet the genius person who came up with this. Pausing the game doesn't really pause the game! Whooooa, wow, that is rich. Jesus…

The idea of a roguelite soulslike metroidvania actually works better than expected, but the quality of art, animation, and overall flow is just bad. Fights aren't hard, but I struggled with controls and readability of things happening on screen. And the world map is convoluted in the worst way possible.

While I get that the atmosphere of the dungeon is meant to be oppressive and miserable, the player experience shouldn't be. To start off, there's a lot of stuff that isn't explained in the game, if you're not willing to really examine what's going on the whole experience is going to be a lot worse. Moving quickly is harmful if not deadly, your reminded of this with your first real step into the dungeon with a trap right outside the door. You are encouraged to check below before you fall as…

I usually don't bother explaining a game too much when I write reviews. However, Dark Devotion sits in a peculiar spot between metroidvanias and rogue-likes, and is also one of those games that like to leave you in the dark about as much as possible. So, since I was really confused as to what exactly I was playing during the first few hours, I'm going to elaborate a little on that. In this game, maps aren't randomized, and there's also a lot of fixed drops from structures in specific rooms.…

Decent game with some really annoying issues. Tl;Dr: the game is fun if the RNG mechanics work out for you, but this game has a lot of RNG mechanics that can get very annoying. If the game is on sale and you have little to do then this is a decently fun dungeon explorer to play. Just now i had 9 healing items, 4 armor items, 7 holy pages and 3 keys. I kill an elite enemy that drops a lot of items that pile on top of each other. Picking up items in this game is genuinely harder than some…

I like soulslikes but don't like roguelikes. The game is ok, but I wouldn't recommend it to someone like me. I come to a point where I have a teleport right next to the boss, but I have no chances of beating him without a long run around to collect gear and power ups. Trying a lot of hopeless fights or run around for 20 minutes to potentially still die in a boss fight - that is exactly why I don't like roguelikes. And killing you on game exit (you can't save your current run progress)…

Bought this game expecting a quick indie curiosity. Instead I became a slightly unhinged crusader wandering through a cursed temple full of traps, demons, and questionable life choices. Dark Devotion is basically a 2D dark-fantasy pilgrimage where everything wants to kill you — enemies, traps, your stamina bar, and occasionally your own greed. The game does a lot of things right: • atmosphere is fantastic • the temple feels oppressive and mysterious • combat rewards patience instead of…

This game could be good! I was truly desapointed with this game, specially because it starts well with an interesting cinematic that makes you think that the team actually put an effort into bringing this world to life, but unfortunally the gameplay falls apart quite quickly and so does the narrative. First of all, the controls are so bad mapped which makes the gameplay frustating to begin with and to make it worse you can't remap it. The movement of the character is also quite unsatisfying…

It had me wishing that I had better controls and the ability to jump. Unworthy pulled that off but then that game was a metroidvania unlike this one. This game had me wishing I was playing a metroidvania instead like the aforementioned or The Last Faith, Elderand etc. It's not a whole lot of fun without that additional element to the gameplay. Also, go into the tags and put a flag next to the metroidvania one, as it is not accurate.

Just... clunky, brutal, and unfair right out of the gate. Do I really want to tip-toe to dodge a trap that's hidden by the text showing you the name of the area the second I start playing right after the start? Only to then die immediately on a trap? Or after blocking an enemy? Let me get six feet into the dungeon and then teach me its a brutal game. Even when you do get past that, one-hit kills are around every corner. Dark Devotion has some of the least gratifying gameplay I’ve ever experienced. The core loop revolves around grinding for random gear drops and hidden permanent stat boosts (Ancient Tablets). If you don’t get lucky or explore obsessively, you’ll end up underpowered—making both combat and exploration feel like chores. The combat is real-time, but feels painfully turn-based: wait for the enemy to act, dodge, then strike. Rinse and repeat. Miss chance and crit chance add even more randomness,…

While at times the game can be fun/this is the type of game i like playing, the game design is done abysmally and I can't recommend it. Big issues: - Combat is awkward, (perfect) blocking is extremely awkward and you don't get a free retaliate. - Traps don't add anything of value aside from annoying debuffs - The game has no jumping, which doesn't feel fitting for a 2D platformer where you can get locked out of picking a specific door if you fall into a pit. - The only way to return to…

Dark Devotion is an unconventional souls game that’s somewhat hamstrung by some questionable rogue-like mechanics. But it’s definitely well made and interesting enough to appeal to a certain style of souls player. Some reviewers claim that this is a roguelike which is a genre a lot of people are sick of in the indie space. But this is not really true in that the levels are not procedurally generated. The game does have a roguelike structure in that you need to do more runs in order to unlock…

Everyone keeps saying "souls-like" about every game that's dark and difficult--including for this game, which I don't think is fair to Blasphemous. This is a Blasphemous-like. It's not like Dark Souls (apart from Andre the blacksmith and the Fire Keeper in Firelink Shrine where you go when you die). And sort of rogue-like, since you start all over again when you die. Ok, now that that semantic nuisance is out of the way-- Dark Devotion is not bad, but there are a few near misses that would…

The game's design is generally irritating to me. There's so many things that just feel annoying. - You need to explore the map to get the runestones to boost your stats, but you can't jump, so, if you go the wrong way, you'll have to restart the run. - Gear feels pointless. Some gear copies to the blacksmith, but most gear doesn't. The good gear that give you better health and shields do not go to the blacksmith and, when you're at the end of the game doing a boss run, there's no interest in…

The combat is clunky, but fair, hitless runs are doable and RNG is very manageable. If you liked Salt and Sanctuary, this is great. Clear case of trying to much stuff at once. Metroidvania Rogue-like is a fun combo when done right, but adding a souls-like difficulty and combat style to it takes 2 genres, that already have a difficult time balancing game-play without being tedious, into tedious territory. A good Rouge-like makes me want to jump right back into the game for another run, and the combat is usually quick tempo-ed to add to that feeling. This game has slow combat that just feels like a grind. Every time I die…

According to many players, this is a two-dimensional pixel soulslike, which in fact is not, since many gameplay features point more to the genre of the roguelike. What can I say about the gameplay? The dark, atmospheric pixel art perfectly complements the game’s moody, oppressive world, drawing players into its foreboding depths. After all, soulslikes are, by definition complex and challenging games, and attempting to add a further layer of difficulty is a bit like throwing a drowning man a block of concrete.
