Cossacks 3 (Ukrainian: Козаки 3) is a real-time strategy video game for Microsoft Windows by the Ukrainian developer GSC Game World. It is a remake of the 2000 game Cossacks: European Wars and is once again set in 17th and 18th century Europe. I don’t know when it happened, but when I wanted to play a round (which I only do very occasionally), launching the game caused a heavy lag — several minutes — and when the game finally started, the screen turned black as soon as I tried to set up a skirmish. I’ve loved this game for many years, but since I can no longer play it and there seems to be no intention to fix these issues, I sadly cannot recommend it anymore.

It’s not just connection issues — the game randomly freezes and crashes for no reason, with no way to recover. I’ve lost hours of gameplay because the match runs fine for an hour, and right at the end the game just crashes. No reconnect, no save, nothing — all progress gone. This is beyond frustrating and makes multiplayer almost unplayable.

And as for it looking nicer, that depends. If you have AMD you need to disable the shadows for the units to be displayed. Controls wise you cant make formations tighter so although it boasts thousands of units, you can only realistically control a few hundred a time. If you are thinking of getting it I would just get Back to War instead.…

When trying to run it, it would start chugging my pc as if a 1000 bit coin miners where trying to bleed me dry. This hasn't happened before but now the game is in an unplayable state. The devs are long gone and obviously aren't going to try and fix it. You have been warned.

There are so many tools for troops, such as formations and drummers/officers, but in the end, a good old zerg rush with the best units of your faction is the only real way to play if you want to have a chance to win against real players. I see little to no diversity from match to match, so there is nearly no way you can give a proper fight against an aware player with your own creative strategy. In addition, QoL and UI are lacking for a 2016 RTS game.
