positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Backtrack: The Movie: The Game is a masterclass in both frustration and boredom. The developer took the worst possible lesson from playing the early Resident Evil and Silent Hill entries and thought "These games are great and all, but I really wish they quintupled up on the amount of time you spend running across these maps, and then make it even longer by giving the player a stamina bar that makes COD protagonists look like marathon runners." You really get to appreciate each of the game's…

unlabelledView post →After the new update, I felt compelled to leave a review. I hadn't yet, and thought I needed too. Not too much to say if I'm being honest, if you want an RE like game set in world war one, this is it. It's all the best parts of 90s gaming without the most annoying parts. Perfect for someone like me, who likes older games but is always annoyed at how little QOL there is. Highly recommend it, and I hope this helps get the game to overwhelmingly postive! :D Edit: I've just finished the game, I…

unlabelledView post →Conscript or not, if you show up to invade another country and kill the people in your way, the rule is that it’s fair game for them to kill you back. That’s how it works.

unlabelledView post →The elevator pitch for this game is, it's sorta top-down oblique perspective like Signalis and Conscript, except for combat with drops you in a House of the Dead style arcade shooter. It's absolutely genius, it plays with a lot of the conventions of the genre in neat ways, and it's just great fun.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game was a flawed masterpiece on release. I bought it day 1. The story was great, the visuals amazing, but there were a lot of gameplay issues. Then the developer just decided to fix all of them, so now instead of it being a flawed masterpiece, it's just a plain old masterpiece. Absolutely adore this game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Conscript! its funny cause i watched some of the very early demos and it totally was gonna be more supernatural, till the dev realized that ww1 is horror enough on its own, and its kinda fascinating to see the very slight remnants of that more supernatural bent in the game
unlabelledView post →9 hours in. The gameplay loop is fun enough -- for a while. I don't dislike it at this point, but I don't like it enough to come back and spend more time. Sort of a "I see what it has to offer at this point and it's just not enough for me" situation. It's a solid effort.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A gritty no-nonsense WW1 horror game that ticks all the boxes! Conscript is a fantastic dive into the trenches as you fight to survive with very little resources against various different enemies. The game is a mix of Resident Evil 1 and 4, with the classic PS1 style gameplay of Re1 and the looting and merchant system from RE4. Combat can be rough around the edges at times but once you get a hang of dodging away, reloading, attacking and noticing enemy patterns it gets way more fun! The…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game, but not for everyone. It's heavily inspired by classic survival horrors like Resident Evil. Backtracking is horrific, it takes ages to move around the map, which is btw quite immense. Also, even on normal difficulty level, it's quite hard and you will die a lot. If these two things don't discourage you, you will have an amazing time with Conscript. It's not a survival horror tho, nothing to be scared of (unless you are afraid of darkness or Germans); it's more like survival action.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As much as I enjoyed some of the puzzle solving, the game overall was bogged down way too much by an unnecessary amount of backtracking and walking. There was some faster travelling options, but even getting to them is a pain. The visual of the game is good. It feels claustrophobic at times and you have to fight your way out of the trouble. The pictures, the diaries, the surrounding set piece really bring tension to every step you take, You can inhale in all the horror of war. The combat is…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Even with all the QoL added, the main issue with Conscript, despite the setting being amazingly applied design wise visually - the game itself can't stop suffering at the hands of a bleak setting. Its choice to make the progression through the levels an often contemplative, careful, and methodical tackling of WW1 - constantly clashes with the pacing this game has. The fact that an "always sprint" button has been added betrays this, but it doesn't fundamentally fix the core issue of empty…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Absolute gem. The general mood created by the developers is some of the best I've seen in a video game, reminding me of the most cinematic games like Katana Zero or Hotline Miami 2 but perhaps even better. The survival aspects are well made, shooting fun and morbid at the same time. The story while simple, is very emotional and does not feel cheesy at all. Big recommend.

unlabelledView post →Conscript is an excellent survival horror game set in the trenches of the Battle of Verdun in World War I. You play a french soldier trying to track down his brother, survive the horrors of the battlefield and get out alive. Mechanically it takes heavy inspiration from Resident Evil, and has many of the hallmarks of the genre like item boxes, limited inventory, resource management, backtracking and punishing combat. The game has no zombies or monsters or anything truly supernatural going on,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A couple years ago I produced CONSCRIPT for Team17. It was a real labour of love for first-time solo dev Jordan Mochi. Jordan's story, and his commitment to making the game is remarkable. This is the passion that drives games. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tkiw...
unlabelledView post →Has the guts of Resident Evil, some of the cosmetics of Silent Hill, the top-down cardinal map of Zelda, macabrely packaged in a dark pixel game. The horror is war. The enemy is man. There's nothing supernatural, no demons, no monsters. There are multiple endings. There are no happy endings. The reward for courage is PTSD. Very nicely done, good ambience, I think as respectful to WWI as a pixel game can be. Has raised my interest in the French military of WWI. Some people have complained…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm not a gamer usually, but when I saw this game I knew I had to play it. It's a disservice to yourself to only watch this game, you cannot truly appreciate a story/game like this from the sidelines. This game made me feel fear, shame, terror and more. Not only do you play Andre, you become him during this game. A game has never enthralled me so much before, and I don't know if it can again. This is a game you appreciate and take your time on, rushing through it, you will miss all the things…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Don't get yourself dissuaded by the negative reviews, the Director's cut is one of the best WW1 games ever made and a really good classic survival horror title on it's own. Amazing atmosphere achieved through gorgeous pixel art that faithfully emulates the bleak aesthetic that was the Great War. Sounds are pretty good too, especially the enemy noises. When you can tell the number of enemies in a dark room simply by listening to their breathing and movement you know you've got some pretty…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very fun mashup of old-school Metal Gear/Fallout (from the overhead camera in the first titles in those series) and Resident Evil. I tried it on Veteran and it was DIFFICULT. Probably should've played on an easier setting but I still survived. Took just under 22 hours which makes it one of the longest survival horror games, but again, that's if you're starting off on Veteran.

unlabelledView post →Conscript is a good if flawed game, the visuals, presentation and sound design are all fantastic, the combat and story are also absolutely fine but the game is bogged down by needless padding and backtracking that kills the pacing. If you know a good route you can complete the game in around 2 hours pretty easily but for a 1st playthrough you're looking at around 10-12 hours, the game really drags on in the certain areas. The director's cut update did address a lot of the more annoying issues…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →And not to overwhelm you with suggestions, but I'll also second everyone else who's saying Crow Country, Look Outside (honestly might be my game of the year), Amnesia The Bunker, Conscript, all good stuff. Also, My Friendly Neighborhood is good but I think you know that.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Conscript: Director's Cut Conscript is a top down survival horror game where you take the role of Andre, a French soldier fighting in the trenches of Verdun during the First World War. You join the war with your brother, Pierre, who, during intense fighting at Fort Vaux, you become separated from. Now, with your brother stuck behind enemy lines, it's up to you to get him back no matter the cost. Conscript is a very unique horror game in that there is no real monster. There are no ghosts…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I mean despite being a horror game if you think about your protagonist's feats, he's kind of scary... He deserves a Service Medal of SOME sort.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm going to give this a hesitant recommendation on the assumption that higher difficulties will solve several of the problems I had with it. The game's default difficulty, Soldier, which the game tells you is the "intended experience" and recommended for a first playthrough, is so stupidly easy that it removes any sense of tension from the game whatsoever. You are inundated with healing items and ammo for your many guns such that enemies are never threatening in the slightest; you can mow…

I had been keeping an eye on this game for a while because I’ve got a thing for WW1 settings, and when I saw it on sale, I decided to give it a try. Well, this is one of the existing games ever, I would say. I enjoyed the combat, the story was good, and the QoL features were nice, however one of the main activities in this game is basically just... running... from one side to the other. I love exploring…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The war to end all wars Wow, it was an experience that is a bit hard to describe but let me try to visualize you my perspective. I was intrigued with this game, because I don’t see much of horror survival games set in WW1. Is this a good horror survival game? Should we call this a horror game? Let me try to answer this questions. Humanity is mad. We’re playing as Andre, a young French soldier who is fighting with his comrades against Germans in one of the most brutal, bloodiest and the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →... Man, I've played some truly unique games for the first time this year. Pathologic 2, Sultan's Game, 80 Days, Deus Ex, Celeste, Silent Hill 4, Conscript, Sayonara, Wild Hearts... Hot take, but games? They can be great.

I somehow managed to complete chapter 2 without the gas mask, and now I need to go find it to complete Chapter 3 since I exhausted all areas that don't need it. No idea where to find the fire extinguishers either. I love the uncomfortable atmosphere, and even don't mind the combat, but I don't think I'd be able to recommend this game to someone else.

About this game, I love movies talk about the war so i when i saw the game, i bought right away and played. 1) Game story is very good and emotional. This game will stay in my mind for a while. 2) Pixel graphic is beautiful, music and sound also very well, describe detail about the scary and dark of the war picture. 3) About the gameplay, i like combat and looting mechanics, so challenging. But one thing about this…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you're into classic Resident Evil, get this. It's like a combination of the original RE1, 2, and 3 in terms of mechanics. Resource management is well balanced. The horror of the setting comes from the muddy hell of WW1 trenches, not zombie hordes, but don't let that dissuade you, this game is up there with Signalis as a modern lo-fi reimagining of the classic survival horror gameplay loop. I played on veteran and the balance felt just right; only criticism is that at certain points the game…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I Ended up enjoying this game far more then I expected in the end. An action packed (older style RE gameplay) Horror game set during WW1 with a fair amount of weapons, strategy, and achievements that will make you want to try repeat playthroughs. The way the game presents the horrors of WW1 and just war as a whole is phenomenal. Making it clear that the soldiers you are fighting are actual human beings, not just random NPC's you'd find in other games. One thing I was surprised to learn near…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →When I first bought this game, I was not expecting much honestly. I just wanted to play some WWI game, which would have depicted anything from that time period. And what a pleasant surprise this game turned out to be. I sunk right in from the get go. The atmosphere, the music, the riddles, and some creepy encounters are really where this game shines. Reading notes and finding pictures was really chilling and some really disturbing, combined with the ambient sounds. The brutality of the war,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It is a good game. The atmosphere is incredible. The world feels supernatural and terrifying despite being normal WW1. The gameplay is heavily inspired by early Resident Evil, with the benefit of modern advancements that prevent things like the terrible camera angles. The key items tell you when they have no further uses and are discarded for you, which is a nice touch in a game that limits your space. You have tons of options given to you for weapons and utility, and you are left to deal with…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I understand this game is marmite for the survival horror community, but I have to say this title hit every note for me. There are mixed opinions on Conscript's combat, specifically its difficulty. Yet I think being limited to first world war weapons, many of which needs cocking after each shot, really adds to the tension of the combat. It made movement and planning ahead of combat vital. The horror is fantastic. It finds the perfect balance between tension and ease. The atmosphere is…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Thinking about Conscript... Huge respect for a non-fantasy games that manages to pull the same feeling as early Resident Evil and Silent Hill 1. Very nice game in vibes.
unlabelledView post →Okay for an actual modern game pick I went with Conscript and so far everything about this is 100% my thing. A top-down Resi Evil-meets-Metroidvania with tight resources, a highly interconnected, evolving world and learning to pick your fights. Groovy.
unlabelledView post →Nah. Quit after 4 hours or so. 1 hour was pretty good then 3 hours of running around empty trenches looking for hidden items to unlock doors on the other side of the map. There's a rope that I inexplicably can't cut with the knife but it's soaked in oil so I guess I need a lighter. Find a lighter, can't find fuel for the lighter. Find an artillery shell. Says it can blow up rubble. Find rubble in multiple places, can't use the shell, can't find a cannon. Find dynamite but nowhere to use it.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I first discovered CONSCRIPT in 2022 through its demo, seeing it appear on an indie showcase channel by the name of Alpha Beta Gamer. I thought the game looked interesting so I stopped watching to go play the demo for myself; and I fell in love. A few years passed and CONSCRIPT fell into the back of my mind, until I was scrolling the Steam store and saw its Steam page; and, that it had released. I bought it, hoping to see whether or not the finished product lived up to my memories of the demo.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a good game with some impressive attention to detail. Only thing I would say is this, after a while it felt long-winded and probably should have focused on a tighter overall experience.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →the combat experience is just not here and the character movement feels very underwhelming
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The rather poor game design ruins an otherwise interesting premise. The atmosphere tries to feel tense but fails miserably since enemy aggro instantly resets if you leave the level. A key takes up as much space as a rifle, and the inventory space is so stupidly small that I found myself having to leave many things behind. A lot of enemies can be dispatched very easily but tediously by just kiting them with a melee weapon, and the AI is too basic to do anything other than run straight at you.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Our latest is live! We chat about the WW1 survival horror game, Conscript, a game that does not pull any punches and relies on realism for its horror. open.spotify.com/episode/3wdn...
unlabelledView post →CONSCRIPT is a game where the concept sounds solid, the presentation looks incredible, and playing it for the first couple of hours feels like a dream come true, but it only goes downhill from there. It's too tacky, it doesn't know what subtlety means, it makes you sit through all of its self-concerned glory and doesn't know when it should end. It would rather outstay its welcome than to give you just the right amount.
