What people are saying

Mostly positive, but co-op is recommended and combat can feel repetitive.

Many players praise the game's heartfelt family story, gorgeous pixel art, and excellent narration. One player called it "one of the more memorable action roguelites I've played" because of its focus on family and storytelling. [1][7]

However, some players find the gameplay loop grows stale and the combat lacks depth. One noted "the gameplay loop starts to stale near the end" and another said "combat lacks depth". [3][30]

Several players strongly recommend playing in co-op mode, with one saying "This simply is not worth spending time on solo" and another calling it "a joy in co op mode". [5][6]

    7. Children of Morta Dungeoncrawling roguelike that is slightly Diablo-esque sans the loot which is an absolute gem, great to play on the Steam Deck, has a fantastic narrator, and a lovely sense of progression as the family homestead gets upgraded. store.steampowered.com/app/330020/C...

This game is paced to be played at a specific skill level. As in: dialogue, events and quests happen whenever you die or end a run. If you are at the designed skill level, AKA if you die enough times, the game works. If you are above the designed skill level (AKA you don't die), then the game's progression completely breaks. You will progress the game too fast and it won't even bother to keep up. You will skip dialogue and the game acts like you didn't. You will skip quests and the game…

Children of Morta's gameplay and design is not of consistent enough quality for me to recommend it. Small but frequent issues drag down the experience and make it a slog. The big problem is that every fight devolves into kiting. Enemies can be damage sponges at times, and elites will ignore stagger and crowd control effects making kiting all the more necessary. Abilities that would control or damage many enemies at once are on cooldowns. Evading also has two charges and replenishes on a…

I'm really conflicted on this one. Pixel art is amazing, music delivers the atmosphere well enough and the story seems nice - most of all I LOVE the way it talks about family and the relationships that build one: the short cutscenes are full of melancholy and heart. But I feel the gameplay benefits a lot from the coop mode. To the point I suggest to play it only in coop. Every character feels unique with theirs strengths and flaws, but those don't really matters while playing alone: you'll…

Pros: The game looks and sounds good. It's well made. There's a decent story that is narrated. Multiple characters have different play styles. Cons: Combat lacks depth. The only depth is provided by having different characters. At one point, you get locked into a very hard boss fight with no way to go back and power up your characters. If you are a skilled player who quickly progressed, then your characters will be incredibly weak and unable to beat this boss. Outplaying monsters is really…

I wanted to like this game more than I actually did. The presentation is excellent. The pixel art is beautiful, the narration is well done and the family dynamic gives the game far more personality than the average roguelite. There is clearly a lot of care put into the world. Unfortunately, I never enjoyed the combat. The biggest issue is that the game constantly feels like it's fighting against the player. Basic attacks are weak, movement is slow until you buy upgrades and many…

Children of Morta ended up being one of the more memorable action roguelites I've played, largely because of its focus on family and storytelling. The Bergson family feels genuinely connected, and the narrator's voice is absolutely perfect for the game's tone. His storytelling adds warmth and emotion to nearly every moment and elevates the entire experience. The combat is fun and engaging throughout. I played the entire campaign on Normal difficulty and found it appropriately challenging at…

This game has a lot of heart in it. The pixel graphics have been done extremely well. Every detail has been thought of. The fighting mechanics are good. It presented a fun challenge. The story was very interesting. The narrator was awesome. The biggest negative is that the gameplay loop starts to stale near the end but I lasted til the end of the game. I have no desire to replay after beating it. I only played this as a single player game. I cannot speak to the coop nature of the game but i bet…

Seriously forgot how good this game is. I originally played it on the Switch. I think it may have been one of the first Roguelites I ever played, too; just didn't know it at the time. This game is a masterpiece. Everything from the art style to the different styles of combat you get to experience, from character to character. I see almost 50 people on my friends list have played this game, too.

Bit grindy and meh in single player but a joy in co op mode which it seems designed for. Some complaints with the very end of the story but overall the writing is solid if not spectacular. Visual style and music is excellent. Strong presentation.

Recommending this one but with caveats. First: co-op only. This simply is not worth spending time on solo. Second: for this kind of Diablo-ish action-RPG experience, Children of Morta is "solid" but also wildly outclassed by titles like Hades. It's not a bad game, but there are probably better choices out there. Also sad that the co-op limit is 2.

A Family Worth Fighting For One of the finest examples of how roguelites can tell a truly heartfelt story. Got this game when it came out a couple of years ago. Back then I played for approx. 10 hours but put the game down, because overall it seemed boring, the levels repetitive, the characters not balanced at all (some characters where downright annoying to play)... That was 2019. A couple of days ago I thought, I'd give it another try, being that 7 years have passed when I first played, with the hope that after a so many updates, the game would be more interesting. Its jenky... the UI is tough to use... the content narrator gets tiresome. But mostly... the game play just isn't THAT good. I can see an argument where this is fun with a group of friends, and if you have friends who want to coop it, more power to you. But as it is, if it's ONLY you, this game is just not worth your time IMO,

I really want to love this game for its gorgeous art and fun gameplay but it's such a weird rogue-lite experience where the individual runs and the meta progression both feel half-baked... The combat balancing is crazy too, everything moves so fast and there are so many enemy types and enemies can have multiple attacks so it's extremely hard to read and react to what's going on. The difficulty ramps up really fast that you end up needing to complete multiple boring runs just to grind the meta…

Children of Morta is a beautiful and surprisingly deep action RPG that combines fast-paced roguelite combat with a family-driven story. The pixel art is one of the game's biggest strengths, with expressive animations, atmospheric environments, and carefully crafted visual details making every location feel distinct and alive. Combat is diverse, due to the a variety of characters from the Bergson family. Each family member plays dramatically differently, ranging from close-range melee fighters…

The Children of Morta Board Game is shaping up to be a real gem. The video game is a favourite, showing restraint with a clear narrative arc and offramp where most roguelikes strive to be a forever game. The board game looks to do the same for dungeon crawlers, free from the bloat of the genre.

Combat feels clunky and the fear of death is high as you don't have potions so you play "cowardly" and just use ranged attacks then run away and let them recharge. Melee means you will probably take damage and eventually die. I like the aesthetics of the game and the story seems fun but I've tried to like this game for 5 hours and I don't.

Despite having an amazing story and amazing pixel art, this game is just a hot pile of garbage. Probably one of the worst roguelite I have ever played. Most of the characters are horrible except for ranged characters Linda and Lucy. Rest of them feel sluggish and awkward to play with in front of large mob. You will instantly die considering the cooldown on your dodge is so much. The upgrades don't help at all. And it feels like the game wants you to not play it for a long time…

Very unique storytelling and solid but standard isometric action RPG gameplay. It's not a true roguelike though, because I don't think I'd continue doing runs after beating the whole game. It's not like Slay the Spire, Isaac, or FTL where it's still worth replaying after you beat the game. For this game, instead, each run is one dungeon rather than the whole game, and you'd have to keep replaying dungeons until you beat the whole game, which is a very unique formula. I'd still recommend this…

At first, Children of Morta looks like a typical rogue-like with rpg elements. But it is far beyond that. What makes this game amazing is the way it tells you the story. You play as members of a family known as the Bergsons. Every time you complete a run, a new cutscene emerges and tells you about the story. The new family members come into play as you progress through the game with each having their own skills and abilities. I cannot really say much about the combat, it's kinda feels blank.…
