After chewing it over, I think I can actually recommend this one despite its rough edges. Camp Sunshine places you in the shoes of Jez, a surly teenager who is sent to summer camp by his parents for initially unknown reasons. When he gets to the titular Camp Sunshine, he says farewell to his mother and meets his bunk mate, who says Buddy an uncomfortable amount of times. Then Jez goes to sleep and wakes up to find almost everyone in the camp murdered in bloody fashion. It's not long before he…

Playing status: finished the game Intro Camp Sunshine is a horror RPG Maker game about a camp with the same name. Play as Jez, a young teenager that is new to the camp, and figure out what happened to it on your first night while trying to avoid a killer bear on the loose. Pros: - The sudden appearance of the bear can surprise you - Quest items are marked on the map for easier traveling Cons: - Sometimes the bear will spawn to a spot where you couldn't run away from - Limited food, light…

While the pixel art is nice alongside the soundtrack, the game itself is just boring with of the gameplay just running around doing fetchquests while being chased by an easily avoidable killer mascot whose intimidation rating was murdered by his voiced one liners. As for the plot? It's not bad but not good, it's like some of Stephen King made for TV movies, good build up (but not great) ruined by bad pay off in the end minus the hillarity of how asanine that pay off was. I give this a 1/5,…

I had very low expectations coming into this game but it blew those very low expectations out of the water! This is a little 2D game that has a similar premise to an 80's horror movie (and there are various homages to many different classic films in the game as well). Basically, a teen goes to camp for the summer and gets much more than he bargained for when the campers start ending up dead. He goes on an adventure to discover what has happened and try to survive in order to leave this place.…

While at its core it's a Slenderman clone, the game does enough storywise and gameplaywise to make it stand out. I went into this game expecting something a bit different. From what I heard, it was an RPGMaker version of Slenderman-type games: go and find all the pages before the big bad can kill you. While it does follow the same sort of formula, there are several ways that it makes it a bit more interesting. Each diary page you find opens up more about backstory of why everything is…

Word of warning to everyone: This game is short and fairly easy. That being said, it is also quite fun. The story is well put together and full of great horror tropes. The story is where this game shines. It is well paced and slowly reveals itself through a good narrative. It keeps the player interested and engaged. The music and sound effects are top notch. The sunshine bear's voice is great. The pixel graphics are outstanding. You should be able to complete this game in about 2.5 hours…

This game is a horror lovers dream come true. Fossil Games' first outting as a game developer is a fantastic one. With many nods to 80s pop culture, from horror movies right down to the 80s inspired electronic music. Think if Friday the 13th and Pokemon had a baby together, Camp Sunshine would be the outcome.

Yes, I'm part of the special thanks. And I'm the guy who's glasses you get in the game. But I'm first and foremost a gamer and here is my honest review, after all, I chucked more than an average amount of money at this game hoping it would be worth it, and it is. The gameplay is somewhat primitive, in that all you do is move around an RPG maker world and interact by pressing A. The game 'essentially' is nothing more than a Slender type as you go around collecting pages with a threat always…

The game quickly loaded up without any issues at all so I was able to play immediately without any bs (sadly not always the case it seems these days). I have mixed feelings about this game. The gameplay wasn't too bad when it would work. What I mean by that is the game ALWAYS to lag when entering and exiting buildings and even when exiting the pause menu. When there wasn't that issue, the game ran smoothly. The storyline is pretty cliche but it makes light of it with other horror movie references and relativly short, if wasn't laggy. I recommend maybe getting this when its on sale and you have lots of patience.

A fun game for fans of 80s slasher films. There are quite a few references to these movies throughout the game. It reminded me of an old "Nightmare On Elm Street" game I used to play as a kid. The game was actually a lot creepier as I thought it would be. If like me you are a fan of movies like Friday the 13th, Sleepaway Camp, The Burning,... then I suggest giving this game a try.

Ugh, I hate to do this, but I just didn't enjoy this game. After playing for about 15 minutes, and not talking to a single camper besides Jez's roommate, I found a corpse, and Jez said "OH NO! NOT JACK!" As if we've met this NPC before (which we hadn't) took me right out of the story. Not to mention, the first live NPC I encountered was upset about something trivial, and instead of my dialog going something like "Oh my GOD someone killed my bunkmate, and I've found other dead bodies, we gotta…

For those who love a good bit of post-modern Horror revisionism, 'Camp Sunshine' is the tongue-in-cheek 80s slasher gem that you never knew you needed but absolutely can not live without. The story is your standard 80s Horror affair. You play a boy named Jez, who as luck would have it looks suspiciously like the tubby kid from 'Stranger Things'. Camp Sunshine is an ode to both 80's horror and to the 16-bit era of gaming, and a rather nostalgic and fun-to-play ode it is! Perhaps the most impressive feat of the game is just how well it captures the spirit of both. First off, I felt like I was playing a game straight from the mid-90's, although one benefiting from some modern polish and shine; some of the things that I've seen other reviewers complain about, such as weird dialogue and nonsensical requests from side characters, I had…

Okay, I saved writing this until I finished the game. So the plot is cheesy, and the dialogue can be a little cringe worthy, and.. I really loved it! 16-bit style visuals are near and dear to my heart, and so is the horror genre. Toss in some more general geeky and 80's references for seasoning and it shows that these developers really get the kind of stuff I'm into. This isn't a long game. I think I finished in ~2 hours. *Keep in mind that I have recieved this game for free to review* Camp Sunshine... Aahhh such a wonderful place to relax and have some fun. At least that's what the founders wanted anyway. Through misfortune, a father is left with his newborn son at the loss of his wife. Surprisingly decent, though a tad overpriced. I'd describe Camp Sunshine as a modern horror game made in a JRPG engine. You search for the 8 pages of a diary to learn about and to defeat a masked serial killer. Along the way you encounter NPCs who need you to fetch stuff, corpses and drawers to loot for items, and evade the Killer by running and hiding in bushes. Obviously, the gameplay isn't deep but the developers put a ton of work into the theme. The atmosphere is top notch and the…

Normally I don't write game reviews but I really liked the game, not only because of the homages and references to other classic horror movies that are scattered throughout the game, but it has a good story. The bear is creepy and has actually made me freak out once or twice instead of running away like I should be. Though this top-down adventure looks and plays like an RPG Maker game, the finer touches set it off. The creepy lighting is good at generating jumpy moments despite the overall parodic nature of things. Your map of slasher-haunted Camp Sunshine is easy to use, and quest locations are marked so you don't ever need to whip out the ol' notebook. Camp Sunshine is a game that is funny, scary, and interesting. The further you progress the more interesting it is. I played the game on the easiest difficulty and found it to be easy which was good. At higher difficulties it could potentially detract from finishing the game. It is categorized as a horror game, but actually it's more of fetch quest. It seems to be inspired by the old Friday the 13th NES game, where you run around a camp trying to find items that when gathered allow you to defeat the monster. But this game is too easy, there is basically no tension whatsoever. It's also short, I beat it in about 2.5 hours. You run around exploring and finding stuff, sometimes an NPC asks you for help before they will allow you to get the item you need, but that is…

Disappointment is the main feeling I've got after playing though. I was hoping for the entire length of the game that at least something original, unexpected will come up – but I wasn't rewarded in the end. There was next to no flavor text, just a little excuse of a plot, and a lame ending. The "16-bit feeling" is probably the only winning point, but there are too many games exploiting this aesthetic now. Being tedious and repetitive isn't something that you can call evoking the spirit of the…

But if you really wanted to feel the chills this game sets off, try playing it in the dark. I enjoyed the game very much! Although it was short-ish, it certainly was NOT easy at times and…

It's a good, little, horror game based on the slayer movies from the 80's/90's. You can expect a lot of cliches and tropes from the genre. Has a couple nostalgic easter eggs.

    1. What's a 'Jez'? 2. Why does the kid say '♥♥♥♥' and '♥♥♥♥' in almost every sentence? 3. Why can he only sprint for about 4 seconds and takes almost 20 (!!) to regain his stamina after running out? 4. Why does the 'w' key not work in the menu, but 'a', 's' and 'd' do? 5. Why can't I use my Xbox 360 controller for this obvious RPGMaker game, even though it works in every other one? (Specifically, why doesn't the left stick or d-pad work, but the buttons do? 6. Why is the bear's voice so silly?…

This is not a must of the genre, but it's a really nice game. The creepy atmosphere is very clean and the few light makes you feel vulnerable. The game is a little short(you can end it in 2H if you know where you have to go, max 3H) and easy, but it's enjoyable. Maybe the story isn't perfect, but Fossil Games did a pretty good job with this game and I liked the credits with "the special level" in the end. Mainly, You should buy it if you like the genre and the pixel art : 7.5 / 10
