negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As an avid Lovecraft fan, this game sadly is a disappointment for me. *The story seems very railroaded and investigation was not really a challenge. *Bad grammar and spelling mistakes were also a common sight on loading screen text. Not sure how this was missed? *Some of the stealth missions were a little too frustrating and some of the puzzle parts really did not need to be in the game. I guess they felt they needed to fill in some spaces to stretch the game out more. *The investigation…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Call of Cthulhu is a first person investigate/detective game and an official adaptation of Choasium's pen & paper RPG of the same name. The game is anchored in Boston, Massachusetts, in a classical lovecraftian setting, featuring an assortment of Innsmouth inspired backdrops, Cthulhu cultists and eccentric individuals. Center of all this is the protagonist Edward Pierce, a grizzled WW1 veteran turned sleuth and alchoholic. He gets tasked by Stephen Webster to discover the truth of the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Recently, I have played up to 3 games, where their ‘Mostly Positive’ reviews score doesn’t really capture the game’s content or range. Call of Cthulhu is wholeheartedly a victim of such ill-treatment, in my opinion. Even though I am almost a decade late, being late is better than never, I’m not sure what bothered people to such an extent. “Us, men of the sea, are superstitious folks.” Damp, isolated, and seemingly plunged into eternal rain and darkness, this island, with residents of…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm afraid I can't leave anything but a not-recommended, as the game crashes after about 10 seconds every time I try to load up a game. I've updated graphics drivers, reduced the graphics settings, verified the install, re-installed, etc all to no effect.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Incredibly atmospheric and with a decent story but very, very linear. RPG mechanics are mostly fluff. They don't change much throughout the game but some choices do have significant impact on the ending. All in all it's not a bad experience for the money if you view it as a simple point and click adventure game rather than an RPG. Steam Deck Runs incredibly efficient and looks really well on the small screen. Definitely one to consider playing on deck. (review time is from two full…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Buy it on sale, it's a very average game. Play it once and forget about. The dialogue choices you make don't seem to really matter. For the most part the game is "on rails" and it's just a matter of did you use the front door or the backdoor with your chosen skills affecting which options are available. The stealth sections are barebones and I don't know who thought it was a good idea to put a shooting section in the game. The detective work is unsatistfying, it's just click on all the clue…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Call of Cthulhu is a game about a detective slowly decending into the mad world of Cthulhu. Sadly the only true madness I experienced was the amount of rage this game induced while playing it. So here's a list of everything I disliked about this game. - Sound Now this is probably the smallest of the issues this game has but it's still worth mentioning: the sound mixing is bad. Every time you change from free roaming to a cutscene or cinematic the volume changes drastically. One moment you're…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Lots of grammatical errors. RPG elements are half-baked. A lot of choices that aren't actually choices. The sound in cutscenes is really weird. Characters lips don't match their words at all. Dialogue in general is strange and disjointed. However, it has great atmosphere, monster designs, and got a couple good scares out of me. The story overall was good, if you don't think about most things in between. 6/10 - worth $20 but better to get it on sale.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Feels like the game doesn't know what's it trying to be. A detective RPG? only for the first few chapters. Then it turns into a railroaded walking simulator. I didn't feel like any of my stats really mattered - it's not like they prevent me from progressing, as, i think, there was always only a single path forward. The stats just add some minimal flavor to how you approach that path forward. You don't really miss out on anything from only having a 2/5 medicine rather than 4/5 or 5/5 except for…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is not about fighting. It's dark, mysterious, investigative....and I can't really explain it....but it somehow gets inside your head. Lovecraftian at it's best. Choices matter and I really liked the main protagonist and the detective work he was doing. I finished the game and never got bored. There is so much to discover and investigate making this a truly immersive game. Give it a try if you like these types of games or if you just want to take a break from the gaming slop they…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Despite general advice online saying to skip this game and try simply play dark corners even despite of all the bugs and extra work required to make it work with a controller, I am very happy I bought this game in the end. It tickled the Cthulhu itch I had, the game plays mostly like a TellTale game, with some very limited sneak and dont get caught / killed moments. I went on blind not without looking up outcomes, how best to max skills etc but was very happy with my three choices of endings.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →crashes every time I load it up. 13 minutes of loading and crashing in the opening sequence.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am a sucker for lovecraftian stuff and this one has lots to offer! It's a step up of the previous game ''Dark Corners of the Earth'' Staying very true to that game dialogue-wise and also the dark gloomy vibe. The endings are a bit underwhelming but I guess there's only so much you can do when it comes to portraying cosmic horrors that are incomprehensible to the human mind.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love the vibe here. Unfortunately its just SO SLOW. The "run" is barely faster than the walk. The entirety of moving is a crawl to the point of not being enjoyable. Also some things don't make sense such as the boss lady telling me she'd need to follow me around in the warehouse, just to then say she was done "babysitting me" after our painfully slow walk there. There is also a heap of grammatical errors/spelling errors.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →To enjoy Call of Cthulhu, one must accept that it is B-movie camp. Going in expecting a serious experience will end in disappointment. As with most of these detective games, the story being just barely compelling enough to move things along is the highlight. Any time actual video game mechanics are employed, such as the awful stealth sections or whatever the heck that lantern part was, it falls apart. I actually laughed out loud during the gunplay sequence; it's just so ridiculous. Yet, I…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →all of Cthulhu is one of those games that relies more on atmosphere than anything else. The game nails the dark island setting, the strange rituals, and that slow-burn feeling of paranoia. If you’re into Lovecraft’s universe, this one hits the tone perfectly. The story is solid, the investigations are engaging enough, and the RPG-style skills give you some variety in dialogue and choices. The psychological tension is definitely the strongest part of the experience. But keep in mind: this is…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game is unplayable due to constant crashing. I wasn't able to see even a minute of a cutscene without the game crashing.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the worst animated games I’ve ever seen. The story is okay, and sometimes the characters just can’t shut up. The Lovecraftian part of the game boils down to spooky tentacles. I would only recommend it if you really want to play it and don’t mind dealing with a clunky game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I first played Call of Cthulhu in 2020, and came back to it nearly 6 years later to replay it, looking for missing achievements and alternate endings. For games of a Lovecraftian horror nature, nothing I've played comes close to the greatness of this game. This game fits several niches I enjoy in video games: detective/puzzle, choices matter, and Lovecraftian storytelling. The puzzles are presented in a way that you could fail one and still progress the narrative in a different way, which…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Basically a lovecraftian first person telltale-like adventure. It is somewhat interesting to play, but not scary, and the mystic atmosphere at the start fairly quickly changes to a kinda blockbuster one. The endings are also not satisfying.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I typically do not enjoy things with the horror tag, but i've been interested in this game for ages and it wasn't as scary as i thought it would be. Which has been very nice. Got a few spooks here and there but the story was absolutely amazing. I very much recommend this. Investigating everything and looking for extra lore has been wonderful, getting to know the various characters and getting so invested made it even better. A great game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really wish I could actually write a review that describes the game itself. But unfortunately every time I start the game, within 5-10 seconds of going into the gameplay, it just quits. Most times, I'm just in the main menu screen and it just quits without any reason. I have tried everything - updating any drivers, even lowering graphics - but to no avail. Please fix this and make it actually playable, devs! I understand your pain as I am dev myself!
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →all edward pierce does is have panic attacks and pass out and the only thing you can do is watch - really good concept & visuals (always have a weak spot for tentacle-based cults); voice acting is decent, too (anthony howell has quite the talent for panting and grunting and gasping) - definitely delivered in the horror aspect (that shambler will GET you bro) - story is kind of half-baked? Felt a bit rushed through the whole thing and didn't get much time to connect with the characters (which…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →To precede the review, we shall inform the reader of a common bug. This game depends on a version of OpenSSL that crashes on 10th generation Intel processors. Luckily, there is a workaround. Create a system environmental variable called "OPENSSL_ia32cap" and set it to "~0x20000000". Then reboot, of course. If you are not a technically minded user, then you may wonder how you do this. Google is your friend. Or ChatGPT. Or the Microsoft support forums. You may also be scared by the opaque naming…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It seems like it would be a wonderful game but it doesn't even boot up. It loads to the main menu, you hit 'new game' and it crashes completely. what's more is that the devs don't seem to care yet don't mind taking people's money for it anyway. -1000000/10.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not amazing. Cool atmosphere and I was getting into the story but the gameplay is very mediocre and I don't much care for the stealth. It's not very well done. There's weird issues with dialogue and menus too which take me out of it a bit. Expected a bit more and I'm pretty disappointed cause the introduction was good and I like cosmic horror stuff but I just can't be bothered playing more.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →To be honest, this game isn't the game of the year. However the grapphic and experience is definitely worth the shot. For the price, i would recommend to get it if it's on sale. 20 euros for a 8 hours game is kinda harsh.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game has some irritating stealth mechanics and no real interesting action apart from that. There are a few puzzles, but the game is not really engaging.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Oh man, I need to collect my thoughts after playing this game. I played it after both Sinking City games, so obviously, starting as a detective and accepting a case right at the beginning had me thinking, “Oh yea, here we go. Time to search everything, solve this baby, and move on to the next one.” (No, I am not reading the whole description of the game before starting it, because I don't want to spoil myself too much.) What a surprise it was when I realized that this one case is the whole…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Save your money on this one and read the community reviews. Unfortunately links to be able to fix crashing errors do not work and as such it is unloadable on computer systems with no patch for rectification. A complete waste of money when you cannot even load it and it will end up crashing within a few seconds.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hmm... I've read all of Lovecraft's stories. This doesn't exactly follow the original Call of Cthulhu storyline, but veers close enough to it from a detective's point of view, taking place in a small whaling town. It starts out ok, then becomes pretty good, but my god... late mid-game to late-game "gameplay" is pretty atrocious. At some point, it stops being a detective game, and tries to incorporate some action sequences, where the pacing promptly and completely falls apart. The shooting…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I had this game in my library for a while, unfortunately it is not playable as it crashes to desktop multiple times. I attempted to play 5 times with different graphics settings but to no avail. Was really looking forward to enjoying a quick lovecraftian experience but unfortunately because I picked this up on sale years ago I cant even request a refund. A real shame.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →there are six skills: only two of them are useful, and two of them can only be raised by external sources (but not the same two)! there are two stealth sections before the concept is mostly abandoned. there's one hilarious combat section where you get a gun with infinite bullets and john wick-auto aim to dome cultists. at one point a feisty lady bootlegger straight out of a steampunk novel pops up, then exits the narrative without comment. this all feels less like cut content and more like a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game does the one thing a video game shouldn't do: be boring. That's really what it boils down to. it's a boring game. The story is slow, there is zero combat (that I've seen so far), the stealth mechanics are bad, and the RPG elements are unclear. I'm really having a hard time thinking of anything positive to say. Maybe the atmosphere. That's pretty good. On paper this should be a much better game, but it's simply bad. Update: I did end up completing the game. The story did…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Took me awhile to finish like most single player games I play, could be completed a lot quicker. Good game if it calls to you ;)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game keeps crashing no matter what I do. Unfortunate cause I was really excited to play it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sounds like Cthulhu Fallout, more like story on rails that only diverges if you invest points into specific skill; where as in fallout allows multiple solutions to the same problem, event, conversation, etc. Call of Cthulhu does not, its one and done. Either you put enough points into s specific skill for a specific event/solution/area and succeed or you don't, irrespective of the amount of time you invest. (EI: spend time finding parts to puzzle a physical solution however your physical is too…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game was a huge, pleasant surprise. I played it in 2025, which imo is the strongest year ever in regards to game releases, and I still feel like this was one of my top games played this year. Why? Amazing atmosphere and brisk storyline progression, you keep moving forward until its over. Its engaging and the lovecraftian influences are so well implemented. For me, this is definitely the best lovecraft-influenced game Ive played. PS: For those who experience a crash on startup, there is a…

Darkwater and the mansion that follows are very atmospheric, and those first few hours really gave me the impression that I was in for a good game. Unfortunately, it mostly falls apart after that. The story never really grabbed me, and the gameplay itself just isn't very engaging. Most of the exploration and searching is nothing special, but there were even two sections where you have to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TLDR: Highly recommended to those looking for an authentic lovecraftian experience and/or CoC TTRPG Vibes. Others will probably stumble over its flaws. First of all, this is neither a RPG nor a horror game. The game recombines basic building blocks of 2010s indie horror games. At its core, its primarily a linear narrative adventure; to spice things up, you get some choices, stats that make minor differences, some detective work, puzzles, stealth, running, some combat. And none of this is…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After 100% completing Call of Cthulhu, I can say I saw everything this game had to offer—and I honestly wish I hadn’t. The game starts strong. The atmosphere is fantastic, the setting is intriguing, and the first few hours genuinely make you think you’re in for a deep Lovecraftian detective RPG. Unfortunately, that promise never pays off. The investigation mechanics are shallow and mostly boil down to clicking highlighted objects. Your dialogue choices rarely matter in any meaningful way, and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is exactly why Steam needs a neutral option. Its the most 'its alright' game Ive ever played.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game looks much more promising than it actually plays out, half of the choices don't affect anything, but still, it's not so bad that it deserves a red review, but it doesn't really deserve a positive one either. If I had the opportunity, I would leave a neutral one.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I actually recommend this to people who have played the Call of Cthulhu TTRPG. You'll encounter many familiar things, especially with how the flow of the game is presented. I have been both the GM and the player, so I can say that I like this adaptation very much. The visual is especially striking, which is lacking in pen and paper games.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love H.P Lovecraft so much that I played through this game's annoying puzzles. The narrative is confusing and gameplay is eh...Still a good game though. Recommended for those who love H.P Lovecraft.
