Brotato is a 2023 top-down shoot 'em up roguelike video game developed by French independent developer Thomas Gervraud under the studio name Blobfish. Later development was taken over by Evil Empire under Blobfish's oversight. It was initially released in early access on Steam in 2022, during which it sold over one million copies; by 2025, it had sold over 10 million copies. It says it requires absolutely zero prior experience with coding, and it means it.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →here's my pitch on why Brotato is the best Steam Deck game: -it's very good, maybe the best survivors-like -it has simple graphics so your battery will last 100 hours -you only use the left analog stick to play, so your right hand is free for drinkin a beer
unlabelledView post →As a reminder: Godot is 100% free. And this is the game engine used to make Dome Keeper, Cruelty Squad, Brotato, and Cassette Beasts. It's very flexible and can produced polished, professional-quality games. You can get it here. godotengine.org

I ended up getting a Nvidia Shield on my tv in the garage, to run my PC remote, and put my exercise bike out there with the TV. Now each day I have played a crap load of this while mindlessly biking for 1-2 hours each day. The game has become part of my fitness journey, made cardio suck less keeping myself distracted and turned gaming into a healthy habit in a way. So for many reasons this game has been a 10/10…

unlabelledView post →There is no way I've played this game for 143 hours. I've played for maybe 12 hours. This is a mistake, very embarrassing mistake from Steam. I assure you, I've only played this a handful of times and it is not addictive or time sucking in any way.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Brotato taught me an important life lesson: violence is the answer, at least until the elite wave spawns.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The new update is awful. It turns the game from a balanced challenge into a one hit and you die bullet hell that the OG game 100% was NOT. I was really, really looking forward to his update as the base game got too easy. But just tripling the health of everything and adding bullet spam on top of the map is not fun. The only way to win in nightmare is to go pure damage with nothing else. Boring.

unlabelledView post →The worst aspect of this game is the hundreds of hours you could spend playing all those AAA games you bought on sale to put your PC specs to the test will be spent on this instead, a Potato game that can run on actual Potatoes.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →People straight up complaining that a free "nightmare" mode is too difficult... I guess I must be one of the few people the devs haven't gotten round to putting a gun to my head, forcing me to only play that difficulty.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My current favorite Survivors-like. Quick runs, lots of build variety, and very addictive game play. Well worth the price!

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This and Vampire Survivors are probably the best received bullet hell games on Steam. It makes sense why people like these two games so much, they have definitely helped define this genre and they both offer something different. Where Vampire Survivors is a longer game with much bigger maps and more “in depth grind”, Brotato is much smaller and progression feels much faster. The maps are about the size of your screen and you quickly unlock new characters to play with. I actually prefer this…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →8/10 Fun little rouglike/bullet hell game. Huge variety of builds, like a lot of builds. One thing that I got bored from was no variety of enemies, there are more builds that you can make than enemy variety, the ratio is like 30:1. Other than that great fun addicting game, had it in my library for a long time as soon as I started playing it i got 25 hours in just a week.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The All Pain No Gain Update: I'm sorry but the projectiles that just appear from the sides of the screen are just a cheesy mechanic to artificially make the game more difficult. I want a harder challenge the update bring but I'm not a fast twitch bullet hell gamer (I'm 54) so this mechanic currently just ruins my enjoyment of a great game. If I wanted a bullet-hell style of game I'd go play enter the gungeon or similar. If Blob Fish games want to have projectiles, then put stationary…

unlabelledView post →700 hours played. I used to recommend Brotato to everyone. The game was fun because you could experiment, break the game with crazy builds, and enjoy the chaos in endless mode. The No Pain No Gain update and Nightmare difficulty completely changed that feeling for me. Instead of rewarding creativity and strong builds, the game now feels exhausting and overly punishing. I honestly don’t understand who this update was made for. I never saw players asking for the game to become…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Brotato is a fantastic game, one of the best "survivors-likes" on Steam. I personally prefer the term bullet heaven but this game leans more into the bullet hell genre if anything. It's much, much better than it might appear to you at first glance. Brotato has enough of its own ideas that it feels like a totally different game from Vampire Survivors. The arena is smaller, the waves are short, the shop between rounds matters a lot, and your build can change really fast depending on what items…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wish I didn't get this on sale. The gameplay loop is addicting. From dozens of characters to randomized loot every round. I may not be the best but I am having a great time!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game does not respect your time. Before the All Pain No Gain update, I really would have recommended the game. Yes, there were some balancing issues with the shop being bloated and it being difficult getting the items you want. But winning a run was possible. Since the update, I have tried a lot of times to even get passed wave 12. The new Nightmare difficulty is unbalanced and unfun. And whilst I enjoy challenging games, this update has pushed Brotato into the category of the devs never…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Seems like Slay the Spire 2 had the biggest launch of any Godot Game ever, with 15x the players of the previous record holder, Brotato 👀 I hope that creates some momentum for the engine in general but at least it will catch some eyes.
unlabelledView post →"I'll play for 20 minutes." Biggest lie I told myself this week. This game was recommended to me, but honestly, I wasn't interested at first. Looking at the screenshots, I thought it looked a little too simple and didn't seem like something I'd enjoy. I almost skipped it. I'm really glad I didn't. Brotato is one of those games that proves graphics aren't everything. The gameplay loop is ridiculously satisfying. Every run teaches you something new, and there are so many weapons, characters,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Stupid update. The new developers really want to make people suffer (all pain no gain update). They didn't have any new ideas but really wanted to undermine the armor+dodge mechanic in this game. So they decided that throwing 100s of projectiles at the player that do billion damage each was the only thing missing in the game. All this does is make shop rng much more important and people can't have fun playing the non-strong potatoes. Not every game has to be a souls game, let us have our…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Vampire Survivors was the game that first got me into this genre, but Brotato is the one that kept me there. It didn't take long for me to realize that the tactics I relied on in Vampire Survivors were not going to cut it here. Brotato has its own flavor, and once I mashed together a few early runs, I realized this game had a lot more depth than I expected. At first, the sheer number of potatoes and build options felt like overwhelming, but that variety quickly became part of the fun. I found…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Brotato: The Starch Slayer “He doesn’t get mashed. He does the mashing.” A deceptively adorable bullet heaven where a potato with rage issues hoards enough firepower to personally cancel evolution. You press start, become a roaming blender of emotional damage, pick upgrades like a drunk scientist playing God, and vaporize anything foolish enough to exist. 10/10 - if vegetables were this angry, vegans wouldn’t make it past the menu.…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So, Slay the Spire 2 is approaching $100m in gross sales in 2 weeks. This makes it already 5x more profitable than the entire lifetime sales of next biggest game produced in Godot, Brotato. Without a doubt, we've hit the point where some professional folks will be thinking they need to learn Godot.

unlabelledView post →I've "perfected" this game on three different occasions because every time they release an update there are new achievements. Neat! I get to play a game I enjoy. Except now, whoever is a sadist on the dev team, please fire them. This new nightmare mode is absolutely infuriating. The game is no longer fun. At least on danger 5 I had fun. Nightmare is just; what the ♥♥♥♥. I actually have to uninstall this so I don't yeet my steam deck across the room.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Was thinking about this prototype today I made a few years ago where I took a monster breeding game mechanics and smashed it together with Brotato. I was thinking if I could change anything it would be to swap it to a 3d lowpoly style and step away from the Brotato inspiration #gamedev
unlabelledView post →Game is great, but it's really annoying how they constantly add new achievements over and over and over and over again, ruining my 100% completion constantly, and including new achievements behind DLC which I generally dislike. Other than that, 10/10 game
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Brotato is a stalwart in the survivorslike genre. Endlessly fun, it feels great to play, unlike some of its competitors that quickly become stale. Can’t wait for the next DLC!

unlabelledView post →The game is great. I just want more content. Not too say that there is too little content. If you can buy a game and its DLC for 8(?) euros and enjoy it for 200+ hours you got yourself a deal right there. The only downside is that it makes every other autoshooter look bleak by comparison. If you enjoy autoshooters you will for sure like this one. If you have never played an autoshooter, the others dont get close to being as good as this one so try this one or dont try at all.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Brotato is a great game, I have a lot of fun with it, especially when I play with my friends. We laugh a lot and it’s always chaotic in a good way. However, I’m not really a fan of the “Remote Play Together” thing. I really wish there was an actual co-op mode. It’s annoying when a third friend joins in but doesn’t have an extra controller, then we just can’t play together. Also, I think the game could explain its damage system better. There are so many types of damage, and it’s kind of…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ever since I discovered Vampire Survivors a couple of months ago, I've been looking for the next game similar to it. I've found Brotato, but FatalZone has me hooked. It was $4 during Steam Winter sale and it's so much better from a game mechanics POV.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Since because hey let's all do the indie game now why not, shout out to @trashlevania.bsky.social who recommended I play Brotato. which I have been enjoying almost every single day for a minute now looks like a simple Survivor-like but a lot of nuance and variation in your builds
unlabelledView post →I have played this game way too much. Abyssal Terrors was a great DLC and the Paws & Claws update is making me want to play all of the classes again! unlabelledView post →A very fun little game with a lot of replayability thanks to the huge variety of characters, each with their own playstyle. The short runs are great when you don't have much time, while still being interesting and satisfying. Even better with local co-op. 100% steam achievements Time : 54.9H Completion Difficulty : 2/10 Playthroughs : Many short run Missables : None DLC Required : Yes Notable requirements : One run with each characters and at each difficulty
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've been trying something new where whenever I pull my phone out to doomscroll I instead load up the phone version of Brotato instead and play a couple of waves. After even only a few days my mental has already gotten better. Highly recommended just don't go down a F2P/gatcha route for your game.
unlabelledView post →At guess it's a classic at this point. Absurd theme, weak sense of meta progression, but the second to second gameplay is excellent and the in-run growth is satisfying and determinant to the outcome. It's adictive and replayable and you will get your money's worth, especially if you can get it on discount. Be aware, however, that it's a fairly hollow time waster. It's fun, but there no end to it and it's very easy to 'accidentaly' sink 3 hours in it when you meant to play for 20 minutes, and…
