24 of 24 · most liked firstThis is not a deck builder. This is a clicker game. Let's deconstruct the short description at the top of this page: Book of Demons is a Hack & Slash Deck-building hybrid > Hack & Slash Movement is on rails. See those paths in the screenshots? Your character is restricted to them and slides along them. Want to swing your weapon at everything in your path? There's some of that, sort of. But then icons appear above enemies that you have to click a bunch to break their shields. Get stunned?…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Warning: do not trust the demo. The actual game is much worse. Just finished the campaign, and I deeply regret that I wasted my time on this game. The core gimmick is nice, but the game clearly was never touched by an experienced (or at least sane) game designer, and as a result it gets progressively more boring the deeper you go. Every single game design decision that distinguishes it from any other diablo clone aims to make the game worse and kill all the fun. You know what would be fun? *…

This one however didn't attract me with graphic at all, yet I thought - let's give it a chance - sometimes those smaller productions have great climate - mood going along with us on adventures. And It happened! Great - just great at it's…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've tried hard to like Book of Demons, but I found it difficult to look past the game's flaws. Pros: + The game concept is unique! + The controls are simple and effective + Clever ideas for mechanics keep things interesting (such as adjustable dungeon sizes) Cons: - The whole "on-rails" mechanic where you move along a set path tends to be far more annoying than anything else. While it functions fine, it feels incredibly limiting and makes moving through the map very time consuming. --…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Maybe I played this game wrong, but I managed to complete the campaign with nothing other than a single hero power. I just hammered one spell over and over for 11 hours and that was it. I guess I'd have to play over and over and over to see what else the game might have to offer, but one play-through felt like enough.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good: The player can select instance size based on estimated session time. The art style is interesting and not unattractive. The core gameplay loop is fresh and fun for one or two runs through the dungeon. Bad: The game promises but fails to deliver on Diablo nostalgia. All three classes play the same. Mechanical complexity is lacking; there is no fun to be had in theorycrafting builds. Movement is on rails for the player; this feels cheap and unfair as enemies can move freely. The player…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like the concept but unfortunately the game just isn't very fun. It is extremely repetitive, which is fine if the gameplay is fun. But it's not, movement is very slow and clunky and most of the mechanics are more annoying than anything else. Most mechanics aren't challenging or fun, they just slow the game down in various annoying ways.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After maxing out the game, I have mixed feelings. It is not possible to post a neutral review, so I have opted for the “recommended” option, but the majority of these lines will be about the mechanics that made the game less enjoyable for me. What kind of game is Book of Demons? The game's store page, especially the pictures, may be misleading to some people, possibly suggesting that it is a card game. Our characters have certain abilities, which are indicated by these cards. However, it's no…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →UPDATE: Finally got to the last boss, and I'm really, really disappointed. This is where the game's fatal flaw is. Not only is the boss fight tedious, but you're lucky to have enough gold to fill your healing potions (If you've been spending it properly to unlock cards slots and upgrade things). Additionally, this is where the big weakness in the "click move" mechanic becomes painfully apparent. Irritating as hell trying to move when you click somewhere and your guy just STOPS unless you keep…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Quite a nice game with an interesting game design. It looks like a new take on Diablo. Unfortunately I expected more long term gameplay value and that is not there or better stated, it is there, but without the satisfaction. The balance between the classes is not as good as it could be near the endgame and whilst the concept is nice, in its current form I find it a bit shallow. All in all fairly good, but not absolutely awesome.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Stop me if you've heard this one: The armies of Hell lurk beneath a little town. Your job, as either a warrior, rogue or mage, is to go in through the church and descend a bunch of randomly-generated levels, mowing down hordes of monsters along the way, until you get to Hell and destroy the big demon in charge. It all looks so innocent at first. Turns out, the "book" part is literal. Everything from the introduction to the environments to the characters to the flame effects on the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game comes with built in advertisements. When you boot the game it first asks "Do you want to play this game or one of our other games? Oh you don't have our other games? Would you like to add them to your wishlist?" After playing for about half an hour it again asks you if you want to buy their other games or add them to your wishlist. I didn't pay money for the game just to have it show me ads. The entire game has the feel of a phone game or a tablet game. Save your money and find…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a game that comes from the mind of a mobile developer. One of its selling points is the option to have a short play session—an issue that often is crucial for mobile, but hardly relevant for a PC gamer. The control scheme also feels like it was made for a touch screen. There are many mini-games that boil down to grabbing things floating on the screen. To heal poison, you have to click the bottom left with your cursor, even though normally you keep it to the center of the screen—an idea…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is quite nice and has been generally a treat to play for the little time that I have. I will not recommend this game, though, as I find advertisements while playing the game (even for publisher's own games) to be inappropriate in games I paid up front for. You already advertise by the "book pedestals" at the beginning and can do this through other means rather than turning your existing games into billboards that I paid for. I especially don't need, nor appreciate, you further…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really wish there was a neutral review. First off this game is poorly advertised, I was expecting like it says, a hack n slash deck builder, but theres no deck builder and little hack n slash. Dissapointing. I really don't think having equipment slots and filling them counts as deck building, by that logic every rpg ever is a deck builder. That aside, the game is just fine, the gameplay is decent enough aside from enough glaring issues that make this a no rather than a yes. 1: youre locked…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Surprisingly nice, charming and quite easy to play hack and slay with good controller support and a rewarding and motivating card system. The graphic is unique, might be not everyones cup of tea but i like it a lot and it let me come back again and again. You can choose your own gameplay time, 8 min or 16 min or you want 46 min? A great feature. Overall a relaxing experience with just the right difficulty to keep you going! High five Thing Trunk for this awesome experience!…

It has super addictive gameplay with tons of interesting mechanics that will grant you dozens of hours of fun. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →UPDATE (2018-12-28): I found a ring that lets fire damage break shields. Also found a skill that lets all arrows break shields for a few seconds, and even dispel casting enemies. I also found a skill that converts ALL enemy hearts into normal ones for a few seconds, so this makes poison builds possible as well. These items / skills were desperately needed and unfortunately I didn't find nor know about any of them at the point of my original review, 12 hours in (which was after I killed the end…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm surprised at how much I'm enjoying Book of Demons, and I definitely recommend it. However, I do want to make sure that other buyers of the game understand what they're getting. I was looking for a new game with controller support in the dungeon crawling and hack and slash genres, and this game came up. That's not exactly accurate, though. Book of Dungeons is understandably a dungeon crawler, because it takes place for the most part in dungeons that go deeper and deeper as the game…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is basically a remake of diablo 1... the mood is dark but a bit more jovial than the original. The dungeons themselves aren't as dark but the brighter look fits the papercraft theme. The main thing with this reinterpretation of a classic is that the gameplay loop of getting and improving your equipment is replaced by a card system that is all about finding the best combination of card abilities for your playstyle and character (which are based on the exact same archetypes as diablo 1,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Awful on-rails hack and slash. Neither a roguelike nor a deckbuilder. Bizarre, and not in the awesome JoJo way.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is really hard to enjoy. My main issue with the game is that it doesn't feel like a hack and slash, nor a dungeon crawler, nor a card game. I would liken it more to a clicker game- very tedious and grindy without any real impact. You get cards, which act as your equipment and spells/abilities, but they all seem rather poorly designed. For example, the Mage character gets a chain lightning and a fireball spell. The chain lightning ability can actually ricochet right back at you and do…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An ok grindy dungeon crawler where all your gear and skills are represented by cards. There are some IMO janky design choices (looking at you Antipope) which absolutely ruins strategic runs with RNG crap.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The support for this game is fantastic. I found a minor issue that prevented me from finding all objects in a level (nothing major), so I posted in the community about the problem. Within hours I received a reply that the developer was on the way to fixing the issue. I've sent my save file and received a fixed version of the file on the same evening. The issue in the game's code has been resolved. This is how every game should be developed.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →ARPG corridor simulator that features progressively annoying enemies with invulnerability phases and nigh impossible to dodge attacks as you can only move forward and back. I tried to like it and I appreciate that the devs tried something new but it just isn’t fun.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It is a masterpiece. Of the thousands of hours I have spent playing aRPG, Book of Demons offer a fresh and fun experience. Its core offerings to me are three. (1) Replayability. Dungeons are randomly generated. Boss stages are random. The cards or builds that you bring to the higher difficulty or against each boss could also have a random element to it that either work for or against you. (2) Flexibility on time. I can determine the dungeon size based on the time I have to play this game. Be…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This feel like a on-rails A-Rpg with a few card thrown into it. i do kinda like some aspects of the game but its just not that interesting for me to keep playing, there are so many other games that does it better (either the card portion or the arpg portion). I was hoping for more of a A-RPG feeling but i didnt find it here.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →When you get over your initial surprise that you are nearly playing Diablo, the game seems to offer some good content. But after playing some more it becomes apparent that there are two fatal game mechanics that overall ruined it for me. On rails movement - your character moves down corridors within the play area, while the monsters move traditionally anywhere. Leaving you at a disadvantage as they block movement if they get on your rail track. You do have mana based skills to force past…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a truly brilliant game, despite being in early access, it feels very polished and complete, only there's even more stuff coming to the game; which is awesome. I'm going to try and make an actual helpful review rather than just saying that the game is good. The game is good. Really good. But also: Combat: If you've watched videos, don't be fooled, it's a lot more interactive and satisfying that videos make it look like. It works like most hack n slash games, like Diablo. You point the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Diablo. Except it's on rails. And with cards. And made of paper. And silly. And easier. Now that I think about it, it's not Diablo actually... It's alright, get it on sale, especially if you have the -60% coupon from Darkest Dungeon.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It was immediately charming and had some interesting mechanics. What was on first impression a strange beast soon became familiar and has been my most played ARPG in the last year. Diablo-esque but with the charm that came with discovering Diablo (original) back in the day. Well recommended (mage is my favourite so far.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Lots of fun for the first hour. This game has a number of problems. It follows Darkest Dungeon's room layout, but doesn't expand on the combat like that game did. It follows Diablo's enemy/boss setup, but doesn't provide good enough controls to really feel like you can master an encounter. That said, it's very fun! For a while. The gimmicks that are introduced are interesting, but they all just rely on you hovering over the bad guy with your mouse -- something you naturally do in Diablo games…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is a gem. I'd like to highly recommend it to any player who enjoys a mix of action, planning, and collecting. What could make you love this game? First of all, the art style. It catches the whole idea of it being a "book". Well designed pop-up book graphics, both in the world, the character sheet and inventory (your card deck), as well as in the menus. And if you are a fan of Diablo I & II, you will notice that Thing Trunk got one important part – that made those titles stand out –…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Right now, even in it's current state, I do heavily recommend Book of Demons to anyone that's a big fan of rogue-like game. The game has 3 unique classes, all playing fairly differently, and having their own unique cards for the deck-building aspect of this game. The actual combat of the game is somewhat generic, being that you left click, and things take damage. This isn't a huge issue early on, as enemies tend to die in just a few attacks, and abilities can sometimes speed this up, but…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →while initially really enjoying the game, the more time i spent with it (about 20 hours so far) the more I realize there s not much of a game in there. Or let s rephrase this, it s a game in which you re not really having much to do at all. You stroll along predefined ways where you can decide forward/stop/backwards and you can, you don t necessarily have to, click on enemies to kill them faster. If you don t click slow autoattacks will fight for you but highly inefficient. Dodging close…

You can scale the dungeons to how much time you have (Let's be honest, who hasn't sunken way too many hours into Diablo/Path Of Exile/Sacred/Click-Click Ad Infinitum. Pissed off everyone in the family because you love videogames too much? Crank that dungeon scale up and enjoy your soon to be…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is certainly a delightful dungeon crawler. Where some games seem to go out of their way to make their games overly challenging and punishing, this game manages to make it enjoyable without frustrating and tedious mechanics. For those who want more of a challenge, there's ways to ratchet that up. What I most appreciate are the "quality of life" (what a strange phrase in the context of gaming) touches in the game that make it enjoyable to play. First and foremost is the ability to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So today I finished my run to the Archdemon with the third class. Got the game around release date, did a run to the Archdemon with the first class. Year later I did a run to the Archdemon with the second class. And again around a year later (this year) I did my third run. As if it's becoming tradition. I quite like this game, it's a nice spin on Diablo. The mechanics are simple, you discover cards you can use as abilities and you select some to which you have direct access. You can use them…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Book of Demons is a Diablo-esque looter game. The main twist is that rather than getting conventional equipment, like weapons and armor, instead you get “cards”, which serve as both your passive and active abilities. These cards vary by your starting class (though you only can choose the fighter at first, the other two are quickly unlocked), and you can only equip a limited number, with gold in the game serving both to unlock more card slots as well as to help upgrade your cards along with…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →When I have first seen the game on images, I didn't think much of it. It looked weird, yet I gave it a shot and after starting it up the first time, I played for several hours, untill that game started crashing on one level and I couldn't proceed (played before it was released, didn't encounter any crashes as of today). And I was crushed that I can't continue on, I've been enjoying my time with this title a lot! This day marks the release so I jumped right on it and finished the main story. If…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is great fun and fair content for its price point as it is now, especially on sale. Note - this game is a homage to Diablo and is an on-rails ARPG (more on that later). The "cards" are really just another way to have inventory/skill management. I wouldn't really consider this game a deckbuilder but it's fun and while a homage to diablo is definitely its own thing. The three characters available to play as all have enough variety of cards that you can take multiple players' warriors…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So I've seen all there is to see of the main campaign, and I wanted to review the game so hopefully people like me don't get fooled by the very positive rating and description of the game as "Hack & Slash deckbuilder." This game is described as a return to "mid-core gaming inspired by the golden days of PC gaming." Quite frankly, that's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ for a few reasons. First: The game was clearly designed with tablets in mind. If you look it up, this game also sells on the iPad, and I can only…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Let me preface this, that I was pretty sceptical about this game, as it seemed like a Diablo I clone on the first glance, that just copied the core mechanics for it's success and aimed to get people hooked by simple nostalgia. Boy, was I wrong about this. Yes, it has very striking similarities to Diablo I, but not in a bad way. It utilizes the well rounded story / basic mechanics as a foundation and builds a great gameplay loop out of it. The devs enhanced the experience you'd get from…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In other review I think most important things have been said and I dont want to regurgitate what has been said by others. However I want to point out one aspect of this game that surprised me in a very positive way. The moment you start the game it takes control of your RBG lighting on your keyboard. The uses its own lighting system to make the experience much more enjoyable. Numbers locked to a certain card will light up when it can be activated, waves move across whenever you level up or…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've played this game since it first entered Early Access (EA) and have enjoyed every minute of it. It's an absolute labor of love and an example of an EA title done right. If new games weren't constantly vying for my attention, I'd have logged a lot more hours into it. Take it for a ride for 2 hours to see what it has to offer!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →At first glance the game is beautiful. From the very start the music and sound design is really well done and the voice narration and acting is supremely well done, which for me personally is huge. Gameplay-wise, the tutorial does a good job of explaining how to play and the game is easy to pick up and learn thanks in part to it's really simple controls. It is really nice that when something new is found, there is a small text box that describes how that particular type of thing is used and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very fun game that reeled me into 12 hours of play today. I'm in hell right now, would have probably beaten the game but ran into a bug that made me delete my profile and start over from scratch. Couple of things for the developers: Introduce a "run" functionality to the game. Back tracking your steps can be very time consuming with how slow the character moves Mini map of where you are currently at in the dungeon would be very helpful Get rid of the floating stars you have to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The cardboard gimmick and the promise of deck and cards led me to assume that this would be a sort of boardgame take on the classic Diablo ARPG. It's not. It's a typical game of it's genre, if anything I'd say it's lighter and less tactical than better known entries. Maybe ok for a veg-out game, but I found it boring and disappointing overall. The overly long text exposition from NPCs really doesn't help either. Click click click hotkey-potion click click click hotkey-ability click click…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →imo, calling this game's card system "deckbuilding" is a bit misleading because the cards basically function just like any traditional equipment/skill/consumable. That said, the game is quite indepth and engaging. The production value is reasonably high with a unique art style and complete with voice acting.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wish I hadn't judged this book by its cover. Every aspect of the game feels so shallow. The minimalist animations and rail movement didn't bother me so much because it fit with the papercraft theme, but absolutely everything else was created with the same bare minimum effort. The combat, the characters, the story, the base mechanics, every part of it is a shallow boring mess. If you want to participate in combat, you must hold your mouse over any enemies in the vicinity as your character…
