Blade Runner: Enhanced Edition
Developer Nightdive Studios, Westwood Studios
Blade Runner is a point-and-click adventure game developed by Westwood Studios and published by Virgin Interactive for Microsoft Windows, released in November 1997. The game is not a direct adaptation of the 1982 Ridley Scott film Blade Runner but is instead a "sidequel", telling an original story, which runs parallel to the film's plot, occasionally intersecting with it. Set in 2019 Los Angeles, the game tells the… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

It's also downright disturbing and creepy... It's a sci-fi graphic adventure game that you simply shouldn't miss. 🤖

I would not know who to ask about making it, it’s just a pleasant thought that it could exist outside of the old point and click /VR experiment

Not just his life - anybody's life; my life." – Deckard If you ever played the original Blade Runner on PC, then you already know how good and ahead of its time it was. Unfortunately, this so called "Enhanced Edition" does almost nothing to justify the name. In fact, many players (myself included) feel it actively worsens the experience. With modern AI upscaling tech readily available, you’d expect at least the backgrounds or character sprites to get…

Chase down rogue replicants on the pretty neat looking map and then engage them in a run-and-gun section. 📺: Blade Runner, CRL, 1985 (C64)

Star Wars. Game of Thrones (depending on the land). Blade Runner. Cyberpunk. GTA. God of War (again depending on region).
unlabelledView post →TLDR: There is a rough gem here. I wish the remaster had done it the service it deserved. General Thoughts/Overview: This is an odd review, because I really think you should play this game, but I really can’t recommend it to anyone. Blade Runner Enhanced Edition (BREE) handles like a rodent extremely unhappy to be handled. That is to say, there is a lot of hissing, a lot of thrashing, it will try and bite you, and it will struggle to free itself from your grasp the second you take your…

unlabelledView post →Blade Runner is one of those adventure games that I somehow missed when it originally came out, and I've been hearing for years how good it is, but in reality... it's not. It's got all the stuff people hated about adventure games back in the day - events that can result in insta-death, "puzzles" that don't make sense in the narrative, countless ways to soft-lock your game... It's so infuriating to just be getting into the vibe of the game, only to loop back round every location, speak to every…

This "Enhanced Edition" is so deeply flawed in many many ways. Buggy, with choices seemingly forgotten and the wrong ending occurring, animations playing at double speed, and graphical artifacts in countless scenes. Some are infuriating such as respawing hostile NPCs that, once dealt with, the scene's navigation doesn't work so you have to return where you came and,…

Same as it always falls in New York, whenever I close my eyes. Some things don't change. Some things never do. I came to this city the way I come to most places—chasing ghosts. The disc loaded. The screen flickered. And suddenly I was McCoy, another detective with a dead partner and a bottle of something that promised forgetting. The game understood me. We understood each other. The…

unlabelledView post →The Sprawl itself is a gargantuan cyberpunk megacity, once you get a couple of areas deep, the sense of scale this game is playing with is immense, the environments are jaw dropping in places, and it's definitely invoking Blade Runner and Ghost in the Shell, so the visuals hit all that much harder.
unlabelledView post →The A.I. upscaled "enhanced" graphics is terrible. It makes those crisp, pixelated graphics turn into blurry, smudged, undetailed graphics. Not only that, but they didn't enhance the 3D models. So any 3D object (characters) are still pixelated when having the enhanced graphics enabled. The cutscenes are terrible too, again removing detailed textures from the prerendered cutscenes and making them blury. They do give you the option to switch between original and "enhanced" though.

unlabelledView post →A truly bizarre product. If I were reviewing the original Blade Runner game, then this would be positive. But calling this an "enhanced" edition defies any reasonable definition of "enhanced". There are no changes to the character models, an area everyone would agree could vastly improve the presentation of the game. They are left untouched and still the same unsightly stack of pixels they were before. And then there's the background. There was no attempt at upscaling, unlike what you'll find…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →That game was amazing back it the day, and I'm greatful that you can still play it on modern system with this re-release. That said, the enhanced edition just AI upscales original movie sequences and scenes. For some reason movies are in 60 fps while the scenes are more like 24 fps or lower, which creates a disconnect never present in the original. Upscaled image is also very blurry, so it's actually better not to use any filtering at all. Mouse speed in the enhanced edition is lower than in…

Otherwise it ran fine, had some minor issues like graphical bugs or items pop-up going too fast.

It looks like someone accidentally smeared butter on every sprite and background, and to make matters worse, it’s plagued with numerous game-breaking bugs. It doesn’t seem like Nightdive is making any effort to address these issues. Fortunately, the package includes the classic version of the game, along with a variant that has some cut content restored. Just play that one. The game itself remains a true gem. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the most underated classic point & click adventures of the 90's with top notch story, writing and faithful atmosphere. This remaster is very good, original game is included, the remaster has a filter toggle and quality of life enhancements. But the best thing is that this fantastic game has now been saved from the pits of oblivion, you couldnt even buy it and play it legally before. Great stuff.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Blade Runner: Enhanced Edition is terrible in multiple ways including missing content and poorly remastered graphics but thankfully the classic and classic with cut content is also included making it worth a purchase at a deep discount price. The old point and click game was basically the pinnacle of it's genre when it was released in 1997, and beside the bad graphics and somewhat unintuitive puzzles, provides a very cool detective pixel hunt that has a ton of movie lore. I enjoyed figuring out…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Blade Runner: Enhanced Edition is an absolute masterpiece released in 1997 by one of my all-time favourite video game developers Westwood Studios. They developed critically acclaimed game series such as Command & Conquer and Lands of Lore. This Enhanced version offers improved visuals on the original. Or does it? Many will probably disagree as although the graphics and cutscenes look improved and cleaner, it looks darker and sometimes harder to see clues. Fortunately, the game allows you to…

I have never even run the "Enhanced Edition", so I can't comment on Nightdive's remaster. What follows is a no-spoilers review of the 1997 game. The game is excellent. Well, actually, it's groundbreaking by 1997's standards and good by today's standards. The main selling point, to me, is the immersion. It was easy for me (almost unavoidable, really) to get…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →From what I've played, the "Enhanced Edition" is alright now because they updated it a bit. Even if you don't like the Enhanced Edition though, it includes the original game in it's entirety alongside the Enhanced Edition.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a lazy "enhanced" edition. The backgrounds and cutscenes have been run through an AI filter to upscale and remove some of the pixelation, and the menus have been reworked. Neither are noticeable enough to make any huge difference. The graphics don't look more detailed than they did before because there hasn't been any reworking of the assets, and the menus actually look worse than the original. The most egregious graphical issue in the original were the low res voxel-based characters…

unlabelledView post →A fantastic point and click classic that was way ahead of its time. The pre-rendered backgrounds impress even today and it's a really interesting story with 13 different endings and many possibilities. Blade Runner spans 5 acts and takes about 6-8 hours to finish. It's not an easy game by any means - sometimes you may get completely stuck for long periods and the way forward may seem illogical and almost impossible to discover without a guide. Most of the game is a fascinating experience just…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I never played the original version, so it was hard for me to tell what was actually enhanced. I could still see the appeal and understand why people would have considered it impressive at the time it first came out. Playing it now, though, it felt slow and somewhat lifeless. I did not really connect with the characters, and the voice acting did not convey much emotion to me. It is fine overall, but not something I would recommend.
