Black Myth: Wukong
Developer Game Science
Black Myth: Wukong is a 2024 action role-playing game developed and published by the Chinese studio Game Science. The player assumes the role of the Destined One, a staff-wielding monkey, who embarks on a journey to recover six relics corresponding to Sun Wukong's six senses. The game is inspired by the classical Chinese novel Journey to the West. It is the first installment in the Black Myth series. From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

It was a strange feeling, like something I'd spent so much time working toward had suddenly come to an end. When I first started playing, the visuals and combat were what impressed me the most. The world looks absolutely beautiful, and the enemy designs are on another level. Some of the bosses drove me completely crazy, but…

They started developing this game in 2018 when there was only 13 people working on it, and scaled up to 140 people by 2024. 🧵Thread below:

unlabelledView post →Blossom, but No Fruit The graphics are excellent. The presentation is excellent. The story, from what I have seen, is genuinely interesting. But as an action game, I simply do not find Black Myth: Wukong very fun to play. My problem is not that the game is difficult. Making a player lose is easy. Make an attack faster, delay it longer, obscure its cues, or punish mistakes more severely. The difficult part of game design is making failure, learning, mastery, and eventually success enjoyable.…

unlabelledView post →First off, visually this game is absolutely stunning. Every chapter looks incredible, and the art direction is top-tier. My main advice to anyone looking at this game: do not buy it expecting Elden Ring or Sekiro. It isn't a Soulsborne game, and judging it by those standards misses what makes it special. It has its own rhythm, structure, and combat identity. The only real hurdle for me is the story. It is deeply rooted in Chinese mythology and heavy Buddhist lore/references. Unless you're…

After 100+ hours and 100% completion, I can confidently say Black Myth: Wukong exceeded every expectation I had. The combat is incredibly satisfying, rewarding skill without ever feeling unfair... well, aside from the few times I almost punched a hole through my monitor. Even then, I always wanted to jump right back in. Every boss feels unique, and overcoming the toughest fights was one of the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The story might seem weird to us Westerners, but it's actually the coolest thing ever. It's a myth, so don't take it literally. The Chinese monkey travelling West towards India symbolizes the spiritual journey of all sentient beings. It's a journey towards Enlightenment, man. The monsters and boss battles represent the poisons of the mind (attachments and negative emotions) that we all have to overcome in order to not be douchebags in our lives. Most of us fail this quest IRL, but we can…

(written and posted after getting all the achievements) No spoilers here, so feel free to read till the end. Also, I'll try to keep it not unreasonably long (kinda hard in this case, tbh) Where do I start with this one? I guess, with a good general question. Is it a souls-like? No, I don't think so. It can cause worse performance and ties the game’s lifespan to Denuvo’s servers, which means one day it might just stop working. Here is proof for that: [url=https://youtu.be/bf3ccg2E_68]Performance comparison video [url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9d63-nTq_-E]Denuvo explanation video Aside from that, the game itself is great.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Look, I’ve put over 300 hours into this game and unlocked every single achievement, so nobody can say I didn't give it a fair chance. But even after all that dedication, I still absolutely cannot recommend it. Let’s be real for a moment: Black Myth: Wukong is wildly overrated, largely driven by biased, hyper-inflated scoring from Chinese players turning it into a national pride project rather than judging it objectively as a piece of software. It simply does not live up to the insane hype, and…

unlabelledView post →"Black Myth: Wukong" presents a heavily unbalanced gameplay loop that ultimately functions as a tedious boss rush. The core structure of the game consists almost entirely of walking from one boss arena to the next, with the interstitial environments offering minimal engagement. The standard enemies populating the areas between bosses are exceptionally easy to defeat. They require little strategy and provide no meaningful preparation for the major encounters, making the traversal sections…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →EN: Black Myth: Wukong is for me a game that sits somewhere between God of War for its mythological, grandiose side, with giant symbolic environments, and the Souls-like school for certain mechanics. But make no mistake: it is not a pure Souls-like. Visually, the game is simply stunning. The panoramas are gorgeous, the environments have real personality, and there’s this “living mythology” feeling that clearly echoes God of War: everything is huge, theatrical, and loaded with symbols. You…

unlabelledView post →This isn't about the gameplay itself, which I'd say is decent enough for a first time stab at a genre in which the established standards are so high. No, this is about the performance, because this game is legitimately unpleasant to play sorely due to its horrific technical state. I have a 5080 and after arriving at the second area of the game, I have dropped my settings for a THIRD time and still can't maintain 60 fps in hectic scenes. The overall level of performance and the insane…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A very cool and creative game, basically blends God of War 2018 with Dark Souls. Fun time, but VERY unoptimized. It forces you to use super resolution resulting in an often muddy looking character model, and the game stutters often with frame rate drops and the frame gen causes visual glitches and artifacting.

I always wanted to challenge myself with one of these games one day, but just never found a story that interested me enough to play through one, until I got this game. This was actually good for me, as I kinda knew what to expect in some parts of the game, though the majority still remained a…
