Eye of the Beholder on IBM PS/1 Model 2011. Both game and machine from 1991: a very good vintage year... Photo shot in my studio. Retro setups, CRT scanlines, genuine hardware, floppy disks, ball mouse and wild joystick. That's the Retro Dream experience.

Hope people won't be disappointed when they find out the You Have Died dungeon crawler sections* are more Etrian Odyssey (random turn based battles) and less Dungeon Master/Eye of the Beholder * Its a small game that combines light dungeon crawling with light Princess Maker like lifesim elements

📖 Bytes of Game Ads 📺 "From the creators of EYE OF THE BEHOLDER I & II, comes the Legend of Kyrandia." Warm Westwood vibes in and out of the game. Hand of Fate is my favourite of the Kyrandia games, but the first one has a place in my heart, too. 📖: Amiga Action, December 1992.

📖 Bytes of Game Ads 📺 I love a good dungeon crawler and it's the Commodore Amiga where my love for them was born. Eye of the Beholder was one of the games that gave me such a fierce fondness for them and so, spotting an ad for it promising an AD&D adventure unlike any other always makes me smile.

35 years ago, Eye of the Beholder helped continue the evolution of the RPG formula. The 1987 real-time Dungeon Master had been the prior benchmark. This game featured an improved UI, higher degree of NPC interaction, and far better party customization. A real milestone RPG.

I started playing Beholder, and while I can see why people enjoy it — the mechanics are solid and the concept is clever — it just wasn’t for me. The world felt too dark, too dystopian, and a bit morally suffocating. It’s one of those games that doesn’t just explore bleakness, it lives in it. I prefer games that leave some space for empathy or beauty, and Beholder never really did. So it’s not a bad game by any means — just one that didn’t fit my taste. Steam needs a “not for me” button…

"Arrested my own family for disloyalty, only to be brutally punished for turning in my criminal daughter." You’d expect a game like this to offer equal freedom to play as a patriotic landlord or a rebel supporter. While it technically features endings for both paths, the game leans heavily into forcing resistance support as its narrative default. Even on a full patriot playthrough, I was constantly slapped with mandatory quests to aid the rebels and oppose the government by stealing,…

this game is so stressful. you earn minimum wage, and every 2 minutes, your family needs something that literally costs like 20000$. if you don't accept it, they die and you have to pay funeral expenses. they always have a timer of like 15 IRL minutes aswell, and there are like 4 of these missions at once. it is basically impossible. oh, and did i mention, this is on easy mode aswell.

An intensely stressful but brilliant management game. Snooping through tenants' apartments, planting cameras, and deciding whether to blackmail a family or turn them into the state makes for a deeply engaging gameplay loop. Balancing your meager funds while navigating heavy moral choices keeps you on your toes the entire time.

The problem is, I felt like the the game tries a little too hard to force the feeling of despair and hopelessness? The mechanics didn’t age well. The despair did. A trial and error experience disguised as a management game, where every choice leads to consequences you won’t like. Dark humor keeps you going — just enough to make the next bad decision. And don’t worry about making mistakes. The game will make sure you regret yourself anyway.

Very underwhelming. The gameplay is pretty dull and the late game becomes a waiting game, as the tasks are few. Every theme explored is done so in a very superficial way, with little to say and certainly nothing new to add to the conversation: the whole thing can be described as "war and dictatorship bad". The plot is very predictable, the tenants have little to say and are all pretty ♥♥♥♥, so is hard to sympathize with any of them. Hell, even the protagonist's family sucks, to the point…
