What people are saying
A challenging, creative roguelite platformer with mixed feelings on polish.
Many players praise the game's movement mechanics and variety of abilities, calling it a "Thinking Person's Dead Cells" and noting that "the movement in a platformer is absolutely core to its appeal." The pixel art and music are also frequently highlighted as charming and nostalgic. [3][7][2]
However, some critics find the game unfocused, with one stating "this game doesn't know what it wants to be" and another calling it Seriously Flawed. Others note that levels feel repetitive despite procedural generation, and the difficulty can be punishing. [36][35][34]

60 of 140 · most liked firstIntroduction This is one of the few “overhauled” reviews I intend to re-evaluate, as the game in question has improved substantially since my initial impressions. It wouldn’t have been fair to just post a disclaimer or only a few added words here and there. We’re doing this the right way, as always. While I’m not exactly a glutton for digital punishment, I won’t deny the appeal which a rogue-like title can cast upon my daily gaming-related activities. The need for an extra challenge from a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have been playing video games all my life, throughout the 80's and 90's the video arcade was my second home. Playing Aura of World brought back a lot of memories from those times. It is a game that is reminiscent of many games from the golden age of video arcades. Games like Rygar, Black Tiger, Ghosts n Goblins, Wonderboy and others. This game does not tell an epic saga and it doesn't have AAA graphics, BUT what it does have is engaging gameplay, great mechanics and features and the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Review copy provided by developer There are a million considerations for making a great platformer, but I always point to the movement as chief among them. Just like shooting in an FPS and economics in a management sim, the movement in a platformer is absolutely core to its appeal. It seems like the folks making Aura of Worlds get that, because they’ve rounded up all kinds of fun movement mechanics for their game and stitched them together with some pretty tight controls. This attention to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have been following the development of this gem of a roguelite since its days in early alpha and really stoked to see it finally reach Steam. If you are a hardcore roguelike/lite platformer enthusiast you will appreciate this game's rich variation of mechanics - slow time, deflect missiles, cloak yourself to survive; grapple, double jump or 'port your way round the level; grab background items and hurl them at enemies or nullify obstacles with them. Watch out for the deadly fog or lava…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Was looking forward to this game but was pretty disappointed. Has some things going for it, but for a 2d roguelike, it has a lot of issues in design decisions and mechanics. The game looks fine, and levels are technically procedural gen although all the ones of the same zone all feel the exact same with the same enemies and traps just slightly different layouts. There are a good amount of weapons to choose from. That's about all i can say positive. The roguelike aspects are pretty poor. You…

Overall Rating - Seriously Flawed ★★☆☆☆ First Impressions I recently purchased a bundle of games, and Aura of Worlds (AW) was a title that I wasn't wholly sure about. Roguelites can be very hit or miss for me, and for some reason, I don't seem to have the best experience with cave-diving ones. Due to how this game…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I’m not sure how to feel about this game. It’s clear that a lot of work has gone into its development, but that work feels unfocused. Put simply, this game doesn't know what it wants to be. It feels almost like a mix between a roguelite and a stealth game but doesn’t do either particularly well. For instance, you can hang on ledges and peek over, which would be very useful in a stealth game but doesn’t have much use in a roguelite. On the other hand each stage has a timer that rewards you…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Aura of Worlds is a Thinking Person's Dead Cells. I did a Let’s Play series of an earlier version of the game (0.71.X) which you can see here: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1620391434 I really enjoyed the game! The difficulty curve in that version of the game was steep early on, but Aura of Worlds rewarded my time playing the game, and I could feel options and systems really opening up with more familiarity. Its approach to the roguelite platformer is worth sitting…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you are a fan of pixel graphics and love challenges then this game is just what you have been looking for! It is very smooth and can get very challenging and intense but nothing that you cant handle or rage quit from it! Even if you lose you are still rewarded which makes the game addicting and a lot of fun! Moreover there is a lot of different places to explore and enemies to fight even if it is still early access. I highly recommend buying the game,it is amazing! :D

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really loving how this has come along, it looks great and I like the premise and what I've played so far. Haven't played a good pixel platformer in a while and it's made me really nostalgic haha, good stuff.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Aura of Worlds is a wonderful roguelike/roguelite platformer with creative and visually appealing pixel graphics that flow seamlessly throughout each procedurally generated level. Aura of Worlds allows players a higher level of interaction with enemies and the environment than traditional roguelikes. There are abilities that can manipulate yourself, enemies or projectiles and the environment, and most objects can be utilised to provide an advantage in combat. As a big fan of…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Aura of Worlds is so cute. And hard. It is definitely both of these things. I'm absolutely in love with the look of it. Can't get past the Bronze guy! Need to git gud. Definitely pick it up if you like platformers, a challenge, and awesome sprite art. Don't be like me and be too busy appreciating the floating skull's design and colour to save yourself from it. >.>
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Aura of worlds is a fantastic little game. It's almost like a better version of Caveblazers or Spelunky. There are a multitude of ways to complete a level depending on what weapons/items/abilities you find during your run. I'm not going to lie, this game is hard. I died several times during the tutorial mainly for not being vigilant enough!! Anything and everything kills you so you really have to be focused on what's going on. The levels are interesting and stressful!!! Highly…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This rogue-lite platformer is a beautiful, atmospheric indie gem with very satisfying combat and cool lore. Melee weapons feel great to use, every map has its own distinct vibe, and the sound design is fantastic. It's challenging in true metroidvania fashion, but deaths feel fair and the progression loop keeps you coming back. Honestly, the pet budgie alone is enough reason to play. Impressively polished too, no bugs in hours of play. 9/10, gorgeous, fun, and addictive. Highly recommend. P.S.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Played this game at PAX Melbourne in 2017 and loved it straight away. Took me straight back to my childhood, growing up with classic platformers like Commander Keen and Duke Nukem. Controls were very easy to get the hang of but as is usually the case, difficult to master as you progress further. Really enjoy the variety of items that dictate your approach to each level and changing things up every time i die. Credit to the developers on the early release and the continued improvements they…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I will try to review this game from a Game Developer point of view and from a 40 years old player that has grown up playing arcades and early computer/console games. GAME DEVELOPER POINT OF VIEW I develop video games and being part of many communities I have noticed this game and its progress through the time. Its many features and approach to solving the same problem has caught my interest and pushed me to purchase it to investigate more. I usually don't develop platform games, actually,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Love the environment effects and where this is going. Most roguelites have very rigid environments without room for experimentation, beyond your typical 'exploding barrels' and other similar tropes, in Aura of Worlds you get the feeling the developers built a world environment physics and lighting. In this game you can enter a dark room lit by only a small lantern, blow up that lantern and the fire it causes spreads around temporarily illuminating the whole room, you can pick up virtually…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A great variety of levels, abilities and weapons! definitely on the challenging side, but so much to discover! I recommend the spear and grappling hook! look out for hidden traps
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Currently at version 0,64 I am assuming this game is half way completed so the following is a Show N Tell that I'm recommending as it would be unfair to poorly judge at this stage in development. -Worked very well with my Logitech gamepad -Six or so resolution options with options for Window, Fullscreen, Window no borders. highest resolution almost fills my 1680 16:10 Widescreen (when windowed) Gameplay is very similar to Spelunky/Caveblazers however introduces Zelda-like tools such as…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It is a roguelite with some awesome weapon/tool combinations that keeps things fresh. I am still trying to master it, it is good balance of challenge, discovery and figuring out your own combinations for a gameplay style you like. I have bought this game on itch.io first, and I must say, the game has come a long way in the past 4 months. The dev is very dedicated to the game and improving the game all the time. I'd recommend this to anyone who wants to get into roguelites or veterans who are…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Amazingly polished for an early access title. A solid platformer with a great atmosphere. Could hardly tell that the zones were procedurally generated because it all looked so well crafted. Definitely worth a try if you enjoy platformers :)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really charming and expansive Spelunky-like with more roguelike-y upgrades, meta progression, and content. You should play this if you're a fan of platforming roguelikes. https://youtu.be/rJoPEexcSfA

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really fun twist on the platformer genre. There is a wide range of mechanics so that you can tailor your gameplay to favor whichever way you want to play. I like to swing around with the grappling hook and swing out of range and take everyone down from a range. The swinging mechanics are very satisfying, as is the wall sliding and jumping. Also I am a sucker for quality parallax effects. This is a quality game and is renewing my faith in platformers which is not my favorite genre.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bought a copy to play over the holiday break and thus far have been pleasantly surprised by such a quaint game. While I'm personally a bit bumbly with mechanics in general I found this game to be equal parts fun, frusting and puzzling. The artwork is very cute, the pixel work is modest and the palette is nice - the music is remeniscent of my game boy colour games a touch. My feelings towards the game in short would be "modern nostalgia" I ended up buying a copy for my partner, and though I'm…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Aura of Worlds is great, I am thoroughly enjoying it. The things I like most about this game is the map generation, although random, feels natural and like it was meant to be that way. The game is less about getting lucky with drops and items and more about skill and being perceptive. The bosses are memorable and fun and the environments have a lot of character and are all very unique. Aura of Worlds has a very steep learning curve and can be unforgiving but this is a part of it's charm. It is…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game is good, I like the variety of items, very roguelike. I dislike some maps that we have limited time and we have to rush (I like to play in my own time), but the action is great, very fluid and the game is cute. The dev (and I think he has or had someone working with him) works really hard in this game. Just buy it. Labor of love.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is a hidden gem. I've only played a few hours so far, but it feels like a cross between Spelunky 2 & Dead Cells with more emphasis on environmental interactions (using the environment creatively). The movement feels good, and there are a lot of mobility options (dash & blink spells, double/triple/etc. jumps through runes, wall jumping, grappling hook, possible more I haven't come across) which is always important in an action-platformer. The combat is pretty simple, but also pretty…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Aura of worlds is a really cool rogue like platformer that takes a bunch of small elements like creatures, traps and area layouts and mixes and matches them together to generate interesting situations for the players to solve. Things only get more interesting from there because the player will always come at these emergent problems with a completely different set of tools. You're challenged on both your overall skill at playing the game and it's general controls and the ability to put…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was really impressed with this retro inspired game and enjoyed exploring it. It looks really great and the music is delightful as well. You can tell that a lot of work and passion has gone into developing this quaint roguelike experience. It’s remarkable that such a tiny team of developers have created such a polished game which has the potential for hours and hours of replayability. I must admit, I found it quite brutal and challenging to play but that just made me more determined to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very fun game, with fluid combat and unique enemies. Bosses are challenging and can take some creativity to beat. Looking forward to future updates.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very challenging, but never feels unfair. Each time I play through I make it a little further, or get to the boss with more health and equipment than I did the time before. It's very rewarding to see yourself making progress in this game. Using different weapons/abilities that you unlocked between games adds a whole new flavour to the way a level (which is never the same twice) can be played.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →10/10 would incerate myself with a candle again. Fun Game!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A game that wins you over with the atmosphere alone. Awesome gameplay, a fun roguelike experience with lots to explore and always something new.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Can't believe more people haven't found this hidden gem. Kind of reminds me of Iconoclasts a bit, but a roguelike.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is somewhat underrated. This game is a masterpiece inspired by Spelunky and Vagante. There are various obstacles and monsters. It is designed to eliminate the player if he does not take appropriate actions. I think it's the game that best fits the "Roguevania" genre. If you want to experience avoiding obstacles and fighting at the same time, you should definitely play it.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →**EDIT**: I may have been a bit too rude when writing my review - maybe stepped over a line, and I apologise for that. I'll leave up my original review, because erasing the past is a bad idea - instead I'd rather learn from it. HOWEVER I do think the way the developer handled my criticism, by contacting me over facebook and such, also crossed a line. When you receive a bad review, even a painful one, that is not the best way to handle it. Sometimes, you just need to let it go. **Original**:…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you like procedural games like Spelunky or Rogue Legacy then you'll certainly enjoy Aura of Worlds. Each time you restart the game you get a completely new dungeon and you have to choose a new set of two items to accompany you on your journey. The procedural generator is quite good and creates a lot of interesting challenges. Sometimes you even end up in an Indiana Johnes style dungeon where purple poison is flooding the whole level and you need to finish the level as quickly as possible.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Lots of replayability - even just starting out there are a few different weapons available to me that each have different play styles and ways to fight certain enemies. Always a fan of procedural generation and looks like this has the right recipe for success!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This was a pretty fun game!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Do you like rogue likes? Do you like puzzle action platformers? Then I'd highly recomend this gem.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played Aura of Worlds A sidescroller with pixelart It has some interesting controls like a grappler that makes you fly around like Spiderman the envoirement has some interesting pixelart and some really detailed elements Bosses are also very detailed and hard to beat. You really have to learn the pattern to beat them. Most of the time, a boss took me more than one try I recommend the game, and expect to play it again.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Full of charming surprises and little twists and turns. Within the first ten minutes I was already snorting amusedly; how torches blow up, where to spot traps, finding out that jellies can hide stuff inside them etc. For someone like me who doesn't often play procedural, rogue-genre games, it feels more forgiving to players who just like to explore and goof around. Not to say this game isn't challenging. It certainly is. But my curiosity over what I will encounter next outclasses the need to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In a nutshell, Aura of Worlds offers super tight controls and movement (very well optimised for gamepad) with a skill-based combat system that relies more on your own learning over permanent stat progression. Most of the fun to be had in this game is about learning and practicing different skills with various loadout combinations. The aim of the level is simply to progress to a designated exit; with any number of timed or "unique" threats thrown in to keep you on your toes. The random nature…

Hands down the best way to spend my down time! Would recommend this to my friends and any others who are seeking for a simple and chill game to enjoy!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Aura of Worlds is such a delightful game! It was quite challenging but thats what makes it fun, it keeps you on edge by its randomly generated levels. this game allows you to choose how you play, I like the crytal dagger and the blink ability so I can keep my distance and movement. but you can play any way you want to, and use the world to your advantage. Along with the game being fun to play it also has an enchanting appeal to each level with a range of enemies that are entertaining to fight.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Aura of Worlds is a fun game with a nice nostalgic feel. It keeps things interesting by making you think of different ways to get past monsters and reach different areas. Keeping it engaging and interesting. Bonus points for not requiring insane specs to run it too! But dear god that fire smiley face knight guy creeps me out.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Challenging but never unfair, this roguelike has somehow slipped under the radar. If you remotely like Spelunky or Terraria or even the OG Risk of Rain, give it a punt. If there is a tiny change I'd like it's an alternate font. Pixelart is fine, but pixel fonts are an eyesore. Progression is good, runs are easily digestible, it's much better than the small amount of reviews might have you believe. If the storepage remotely seems like it's your thing, it will be.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Some games overwhelm you with complexity. this game does the opposite and that’s exactly why it shines. This chaotic, creativity driven rogue lite platformer drops you into unpredictable, ever changing labyrinths where every run feels fresh, every decision matters, and every ability can turn the tide in your favor. Whether you're blasting through obstacles, grappling across danger, dashing past traps, or cleverly using the environment to outsmart powerful guardians, the game constantly rewards…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Aura of Worlds is the kind of game where you get into a flow state and hours have passed. If it wasn't already 3AM I would of been stuck in a "one more" loop for a long while. It features 5 worlds where you must defeat a boss at the end of each in order to well... I'm not sure yet I guess we'll find out haha The gameplay is super addicting and felt like a mix of Terraria, Noita and Spelunky.
