What people are saying

Mixed reception: some enjoy the underwater combat, others find it repetitive and disappointing.

Some players praise the game's fun combat and decent AI, noting that new additions to the arsenal and enemy tactics keep engagements engaging. Others find the combat repetitive and boring, with dull weapons and swarming enemies that make fights feel tedious. [17][34]

The story and writing receive mixed reactions: some enjoy the narrative and find it builds to a satisfying end, while others criticize it as boring, poorly written, and a disgrace to the original games. The co-op mode is heavily criticized because the guest player loses all progress upon rejoining. [16][33][18]

Praised fun combat · decent AI · good graphics · enjoyable story for some
Criticised repetitive combat · boring story · bad co-op progress saving · lack of polish · disappointing compared to originals

Bought this game for the coop-campaign, as coop playable games are somewhat rare. We got really into it and had lots of fun for a few hours. The bad surprise came the next time we wanted to pick back up and loaded into the game. To find out that the coop-guest does not get saved, all their progress, items and money are just gone. According to the devs, this is what they wanted and had planned. If they don't want to save the coop player, they could have at least "cloned" the host…

Overview Aquanox Deep Descent (ADD) is a semi-open world shooter set underwater, after the world endured the "Last Day" - an apocalyptic event where most of humanity perished and the rest was forced into oceanic depths. Players impersonate Kaelen, one of the chosen few to be preserved in stasis for centuries, now woken up by unclear circumstances. After a dangerous escape, he and his companions - left without most memories - decide to embark on a quest to find the answers about their past,…

TLDR 6/10, adequate 6 DoF combat game, some flawed mechanics and absurd story, but looks half decent and some what enjoyable. Longer thoughts. With fond memories of the originals and Archamedian Dynasty, I backed this on Kickstarter. The end product...is a bit of a let down. But, ignore the outright stupid things people have said about this game. (I've given this a positive review to counter balance them a little and because Steam doesn't have a "Meh" rating yet) "It should be a mobile…

Well, I bought that game hoping for a good underwater/exploration/adventure game, I finished it just now, and unfortunately, it was lacking in every way. The world design: Aqua is boring. Especially if I compare it to Subnauticas many biomes. Aquanox's plot takes you across multiple oceans all over the world, however if you've seen the first zone, you've seen them all. Always the same design, again and again, for everything, zone; bases; ships. Furthermore, I know Aquanox is supposed to be…

Released in October 2020, abandoned in December 2020. A shame, I loved the previous games and was looking forward to playing this game's coop campaign with a friend, but the choices made by the developers and the bad writing made the experience less than enjoyable.

I'm mad. Aquanox was one of the first games I remember getting as a kid, nearly 20 years ago now, and by sheer coincidence, I've had the good fortune of playing through the first one again not more than a couple weeks ago (at time of writing this review), and loved it's smart writing & appealing visuals. THQ Nordic clearly didn't do the same at any point throughout this game's development cycle. Complete spoilers below, so TLDR: Deep Descent is bland, visually uninteresting, boring from both…

As a fan of Archimedean Dynasty, I was bitterly disappointed by the Aquanox games. All of the subtleties of the original were wiped away. AD had great upgrade system, which allowed for more tactical play. Stealth elements that actually worked, where all you had to be was quieter than the enemy, and they would look right through you, allowing for ambushing tactics. All of that was wiped out, among many other things. Then I hear of this, after the Kickstarter ended. And while I was annoyed…

This is another example of "i wish there was a maybe rating". Preface - loved all of the older aquanox games (Archimedean Dynasty, Aquanox 1+2) and not feeling this one, thus the mixed aspect/not liking it. TLDR: another game suffering from the 4 player co-op disease, if you have mates that want to play this. It will be a fun hour or two, otherwise i would give it a skip unless its heavily discounted/sale (50% at least) Gameplay - gone are the old levels, and now the game focuses on a world…

I've been a backer of this game since its inception ... what I wanted was Aquanox 3, what I got was years and years and years of waiting, radio silence from the devs, project almost being scrapped and ultimately a lot of money wasted on a VERY mediocre game. Let's sum it up Graphics: Not bad, not great, definitely not year 2020 World: Single zones connected via jump gates, no interconnected world, nothing to really explore, lifeless Enemies: There are 2 types of enemies - those in subs like…

The greatest issue with this game is not to die by boredom. The devs absolutely did not understood the meaning of its predescessors. This game always stood for fast, evasive ship fight, yet there is absolutely no in it. The game throws slows moving enemies which simply shoot at you almost making nothing else. They changed the mission based gaming to some open world flair, which could work if actually something would happen. The story states that factions are at war but there is no combat in…

Aquanox Deep Descent is the attempt to revive an older franchise. It began with a game named Archimedean Dynasty, released in 1996. 2 Sequels followed, under the new brand name of Aquanox. All of those games were quite similar to the "three degrees of freedom" space simulation games that came up roughtly at the same time, but tried to put themselves apart by not going up, but rather down. All three might be considered aaa titles considering the amount of work and effort, as well as content…

I read several reviews before buying the game, all telling the same: the game´s bad, dont buy it. Bought it anyway since I am a huge fan of the first part of the series Schleichfahrt / Archimedean Dynasty... Now a couple of hours into the game I must accept: nostalgia is a bad adviser. Shame on me. The game is quite stripped down concerning features and general scale. But Aquanox its not a triple A title. So I guess thats ok. Does not support ultrawide screens. Bought the game 2 weeks ago, but only recently installed it. Noticed that it had no FOV settings whatsoever so 30% of the hud is missing. No radar, no weapon details, no ammo info. Tried to refund it, but since i bought it more than 2 weeks ago (even if i just installed it) my request was denied. It's boring, there's no feeling of diving whatsoever. It's more like descent in molasses.

I got this game for 10 bucks and it's not worth even 2 bucks. I played it an hour and was surprised at how un-fun it was. Bad voice acting, flat/boring story, and gameplay wasn't fun. I checked the reviews and community tab to learn what a train wreck this game is so I decided to abandon ship (pun intended). Don't play this game even for free, play something better.

I finished the entire game and loved it. It is not like the classic ones but It doesn't have to be exactly as those. It has a slower pace and mixes combat with some minimal exploration to find resources. I played the game on HARD and is not that hard if you keep the resources incoming and completing secondary quests to buy better armament. The ships unlock slow at first but then near the end you will get the best ones for any role that you might prefer, from the massive tank to the balanced…

I hoped so much when i preordered... And then it basically is nothing alike the old Schleichfahrt games. Im not even sure if it shares the same lore. Major issues for me are: Story is boring Fights are boring and enemies are lethal since they swarm you Basically you only have your guns and a special weapon instead of the 2 dozend different torpedos and guns the old games had for you in store. Unfortunately, the only thing that is good about the game is the name and the fond memories of the old games in the francize. The story is so bad a highschool student could have written a better one as homework, the combat is incredibly repetitive and boring, weapons are dull, ship designs are ok, visually, but have very little impact in gameplay and the only way the designers thought they could make something challenging was to spawn enemy subs right on top of you, while you were already…

I'll be honest, even if it was the most perfect underwater combat sim it would still be a gigantic disgrace to the amazing flavor, atmosphere and writing of the original AquaNox games. And I don't think it is a fantastic underwater sim, personally it feels pretty bland to play to me and has disappointing limitations, but I'm not an underwater sim enthusiast, I don't really care about that all that much. As a Kickstarter backer to honor the original Archamedian Dynasty i was surprised how good this game is. This is a old school story driven linear experience that is a lot like the original game (no open world). As a diver of 30 years of experience I can honestly say that this arcade "underwater space sim" does capture the feeling of beeing deep under water in an excellent way without beeing a simulation. The cave sections are fantastic for anybody who has done any sort of cave diving. Happy to…

As a Veteran of Aquanox 1 and 2 it hurts to play this game. It's ok and would propably be better off under a different franchise. I only played an hour but the weak tutorial, confusing introduction, enemy filled levels, soulless menu and character designs turned me off. I guess it's an alright 6DOF shooter but it's not Aquanox nor Schleichfahrt.

The zipping arround in your spacecraft/submarine is on par with aquanox - or even G-Police if anyone remembers that (and that was on the Jupiter moon of Kallisto!) The maps are gorgeous. It's with a pretty heavy heart that I don't recommend this game. Archimedian Dynasty was one of my favourite games as a teenager, I loved the plot and the ship combat, the terror of the bionts. Aquanox made it faster paced and less of a ship simulator, more action, which was also good, and again the story followed on from A.D. The reveal being that once again the Bionts are a threat bigger than literal lovecraftian monsters from the deep. Aquanox: Revelations was a side story that feels…

And then another 5 times in 10 minutes during the campaign? Ugh. Subnautica will have to do for my cozy cockpit underwater simulator craving. This feels like underwater Starfox except not good. The ships somehow mange to be too slow and too fast at once, they move slowly, but turn way too well for that. As a result it doesn't feel like proper action and not like a proper "simulation" (like the original, Archimedian Dynasty) either. This leads to the enemies to behave like glorified turrets, with a litte bit of swaying in the water and maybe slowly (since ships are slow) closing in on you or following you. If you play a little longer (~6-7h) you'll get really great ships that are WAY more fun due to better agility and speed, weapons with more bang and the story gets a boost and the graphics and missions are tuned up. This game is "meh" in it's purest form. While it is mildly entertaining, I honestly can't actually recommend it. Combat is just a massive slog thus far, and at ~8 hours of play time it's basically boiled down to being nothing more than slight remixes on the theme "keep shooting them and hope they explode before you do". First impressions: I'm missing a physics engine for movement. No drifting or currents feel unnatural in underwater environment. This was way better in the first three games. Sometimes loot can't be picked up as it's in the ground or walls and floors.

tl;dr -> There must be something in the water. Disclosure: I received a review key from the developers. I may be negatively biased towards games that take place underwater (with the exception of Subnautica) because I love the space theme and play a lot of simulators like Elite: Dangerous, so I often find combat and movement in the ocean to be too bloated and boring. [This game was played through Steam] If you like underwater shooters, upgrading submersibles, and traversing the deep blue,…

Kinda like a linear Freelancer, but underwater and with no trading. Still good though. Man I wish Freelancer got a remake.

In the previous Aquanox games, enemies spawned out of sight and made their way to you. This makes sense. In this game they spawn in firing range all around you in 3D space and immediately stick torpedoes in you. The game is slow to the point of being boring, gone the fast paced, techno music powered fun of Aquanox. Now your enemies will materialize from thin air/water like ninjas and kill you. Your ship is so slow I was able to chat on my phone while moving from gate to mission. The ships…

I hate games where some enemies are artificially invulnerable to advance the plot (right at the beginning) and spawn all the time where you just killed them (when you enter the IPF territory / Neversleep), again for the plot. For both they could have just let the enemies come out of the stations which would have had the same effect but is much less annoying than an enemy appearing out if thin air 30m ahead of you or not being able to destroy the exact same ships you could easily kill a minute…

A flashy shooter game that borrows the Aquanox name and throws some names and events in from the old Aquanox lore to lure you in, but has none of the worldbuilding that the old games had. The characters are wooden and boring. Remember Iwan King, Amitab, Atahualpa Jones? Yeah, none of that here. It's all just I'll-help-but-first-do-me-a-favor people everywhere, not an ounce of character between the lot of them. No landmarks either (think El Topo's Asylum, or Brainfire from the old games), just…

I have this game for the sole purpose of playing coop campaign with a friend. The game advertises itself as being a coop game where you can play the campaign with friends. What it does not say is that only your stats will be saved and if you try to pick up that campaign with the same friend another day, which is totally normal, then you will have your cool stuff you've worked towards in the game but your friend will have lost everything and start almost from scratch. The coop campaign mechanic…

They put a mission into the middle of the game that requires you to win an unwinnable race. You can't win because your opponent has a ship which is about 1.5 times as fast yours, so no matter what you do, you can't win. It's a pity because I liked this game a lot until that point and considered buying the other parts of the series. Now of course I won't, and I suggest you save your money on this crap.
