+ Intriguing, dark story setting and atmosphere. + Rich backstories for each boss. + Combat comes to life as more character skills are unlocked. + Varied gameplay mixing different genres results in a unique, challenging experience. + Beautiful art design and intricately designed environments, with a very impressive sense of scope considering this was made by only 3 people. The Great Plains and The Hall of Nightmares in particular are visual highlights. + Consistently haunting soundtrack.…

Long story short: the game is amazing. Don't be so quick to judge it based on its somewhat poor execution, which is only natural for a game with so much content being developed by 3 people only. When I first played it, I passed judgement based on that, and never touched the game again. That is, until now – and I'm so glad to have tried it again. The graphics aren't so shiny when compared to more recent indie titles, but their poor execution and processing (I'm looking at you, anti-aliasing)…

This one caught me by suprise. You might think it's a bit irky with it's presentation and i can honestly say that the store page for this game doesn't attract much attention except for the awesome art, but this was one interesting ride. Despite flaws with the voice acting and little variation between both controllable characters, it has a gorgeous level design, a nice hack n' slash gameplay, well crafted bosses and a great soundtrack. The lore made me interested in the Anima tabletop RPG game,…

This game was a very pleasant surprise, even more when I learned it was made by a team of only 3(!) people. Anima: Gate of Memories is a very solid Action (J)RPG with a big focus on exploration (with platforming) and puzzles. Oh, and it's pretty challenging too. It looks good, the voice acting is decent, the lore and story is interesting, environments are varied, boss fights are cool and combat in general is pretty solid. An all-around solid package basically. HOWEVER, this doesn't mean it's…

Stardew Valley is always cited as a cozy game (and maybe one of the urtexts along with Anima Crossing), but I think it has equal DNA shared with something like Persona. They are games that make you FEEL opportunity cost when time is the most visceral resource.

Holy molly...what a strange game. It feels ok at first, then you realize melee attacks don't stagger, only magic does. Entering melee and waiting for your attack animation to finish is basically accepting you'll be hit, with absolutely nothing you can do. You're just sitting there, mid attack, and waiting to lose health. In the first 3.5h of this game 90% of the enemies encountered stagger or knock you away on each hit, making it a painful experience. Not because they hit hard, they really…

I gave this game a shot after keeping an eye on it for years. Finally decided I was ready to try it. Unfortunately, the game is very unbalanced in its difficulty. Stiff controls, along with enemies who can be too quick, don't telegraph very well, will swarm you, have a lot of unflinching states, and various other issues. I quit on the 4th Messenger Boss Fight. It has an avoidable skill that flips your controls and poisons you, along with other gimmicks that make the fight very annoying. I even…

This game is great, so underrated. It's like the lovechild of Darksiders and Devil May Cry, the story is rich, the gameplay is fun, and each character is unique and, well.... has character! Sure it's a little rough around the edges, it's a game that could've benefited from more funding and a larger development team, and the voice acting does sound a little off at times, but that doesn't take away from the enjoyment of the game!

While it's hard to place my finger directly on it, it feels like gameplay is heavily inspired by games similar to Neir and Neir Automata. This isn't exactly a bad thing, except it makes me desperately want to play those games instead. You have a talking book containing a mighty magical essence, a camera that often changes perspective in the middle of combat, and magical projectiles you either need to dodge or shoot with your own projectiles. That's where the comparison ends though. Story is…

I don't normally give reviews but felt like I have to for Anima: Gate of Memories. I have always adored the action of hack and slash games. Furthermore, I dived into the game without any expectations of what to come and I was even more amazed that this game was actually developed by a team of 3 people. Pretty impressive I can say. Although it was a pretty short story and a little predictable at times, the difficulty of the game can keep you engaged to the screen. "Just a little more... One…

It's flawed, but I love it nonetheless. Imagine a mix of Furi and NieR:Automata that were to be created by Obsidian. The result would be Anima: Gate of Memories. The gameplay is fantastic, and that is why I invoke Furi for comparison. The setting is dark and interesting, hence NieR. Obsidian is the technical side of things. The writing is flawed, the voice acting is...present, to be as nice as possible, there are tiny little bugs and imperfections. And yet I still wholeheartedly recommend…

Yeah it's gonna be a no from me dawg. This game has some charm and good ideas with the world building but the execution just isn't there. World is open ended and free to explore with little direction, however it's quite barren and little to actually do in it besides kill the same 2 enemies. Both combat and movement are clunky and sluggish. You switch between the 2 characters during combat to kill either the light or dark enemies, and switching between characters is seamless and you can set up a…

This game isn't horrible (at least so far as I played) but it wasn't very good either. It started promising enough, and when the bad voice acting kicked in it seemed like the type of "so bad its funny". I was on board with that. The character felt a little clunky but was still decent, animations were nice. The skill tree looked pretty in depth, and the two avatars you could choose between was a fun twist. But for me the biggest problem to me was the enemy design. I didn't play for all that…

This, is not a very good game. Combat is simultaneously punishing and broken, depending on whether or not you can get off the highest-tier of magic against bosses who will otherwise mash your face into the floor. Regular enemies swarm in large numbers with little way to figure out where the snipers are aiming from because the camera is too focused on making sure you lose as much health as possible. Storywise the game starts with a relatively interesting premise and then proceeds to utterly bomb…

Feels like a blend of Castlevania, Demon's Souls, and Devil May Cry. Really cool game with interesting mechanics and good challenge. There are some parts that remind you it's most definitely an indie game, but that's not really a bad thing. English localization on some of the text isn't great so the voice acting actually helps because the narrated stuff is revised to sound better. Some people hate on the voice actors but I thought they did a pretty good job overall. Combat is the most fun part…

The difficulty is beyond brutal on some of the fights. I don't mind the platformer stuff, but there are some timing and AI issues, imho. If you're a hardcore gamer, don't mind dying 20 or 30 times or more on a fight even when you know the mechanics, and not a casual then maybe this is a game for you.

It's not that this game is absolutely horrible. It's just that it's merely okay in almost all aspects. The graphics are alright, but not amazing. The story is pretty basic, and the characters just aren't interesting or developed. The mechanics aren't ground-breaking. You have your typical twitchy action combat, a few special abilities, and your skill tree where you learn new techniques and gain passives. Very standard. I'm gonna be honest. This was one of the fastest times I've quit a game after giving it a genuine attempt. I was extremely disappointed at how lacking the game felt in every which way. The dub is.. painful. After the third time he said Baby, I felt like I had been hit on by every man in the bar and somehow raunchier than that. The combat is beyond lackluster and the controls felt like I was playing a Ludum Dare. Would not recommend.

The scenery is pretty bland. Lacks things like moss, weeds, rubble kind of objects, But what is there is a decent quality. You have a dodge button wich also functions as the run button, So you dodge everytime you want to run. And with the delay after dodging its more effective to just walk in circles. The only challenge I found aside from some jumping puzzles was the overuse of overpowered ranged attacks. They are telegraphed, but the AI has perfect aim at the point of firing their fast…

"Anima: Gate of Memories" is an older game from 2016. It's a venerable 8 years old at the time of this review. It's a handheld (Nintendo Switch)/console game that's also been put on Steam as a bit of an afterthought, as it's very much designed for the handheld/console gaming audience. It's based on a tabletop RPG setting but that really doesn't follow through to the rather mediocre gaming experience. The overriding theme of this game, and thus my review, is that this is a terrible console…
