60 of 378 · most liked firstI’ve always liked this franchise — the first three games were genuinely great. Unfortunately, this latest entry feels ruined by Paradox’s typical predatory DLC politics. There’s an absurd amount of content locked behind paywalls, constant DLC releases, and prices that simply aren’t worth it. It’s frustrating to see how much potential is wasted because of corporate greed. Another beloved series lost to a company that has completely forgotten what fair and respectful game design looks like.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly this is a great game but the way that paradox handles their DLC makes me feel like I purchased a portion of the game and in order to get the whole thing I have to pay more money. It feels dishonest and scummy. It's really unfortunate to see a decent product get shredded by predatory business practices.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After spending considerable time with Age of Wonders 4, the fifth entry in a beloved series, I find myself in a position of respectful but firm critique. While the game presents a beautiful and highly customizable shell, the strategic depth at its core feels, in several key areas, to have been not just simplified, but dumbed down. First and foremost, the tactical combat is a significant step backward. The classic, engaging mechanic of opportunity attacks and retaliation strikes has been…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game has been out for over 2 years, and they are pushing tons of DLCs, but I haven't played a single round that doesn't have AT LEAST half a dozen glitches that get very annoying. Some of these glitches are also fundamental to certain builds, so they literally make those builds unplayable. At the time of this review, I just found out, 6 hours into may latest play, that my zombie heal ability wasn't working, no matter what I did (restarts, shut the game down, previous saves, etc). At this…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I didn't want to leave a bad review, but after sinking hundreds of hours into it, I feel it's time. Age of Wonders 4 isn't a terrible game—it's a solid foundation with eye-catching visuals. At launch, it showed real potential to evolve into something great. Unfortunately, that potential has gone unrealized, and at this point, it's probably too late. The biggest issue: It's a classic DLC cow. The base game is essentially a barebones demo. Before buying, tally up the DLC costs—there's a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game got boring really quickly and it became apparent why, they wanted me to buy the million different DLCs they planned to pump out. If you're able to release several different DLCs in a year, you could have easily put more effort into your game to make it a more enjoyable experience. Part of me feels like a lot of assets were held back from the base game in order to sell to us later. If the DLC was $5-10 I may not complain, but you're asking for over half the price of your base game for…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →They changed their privacy policy. You cannot play the game unless you consent to them using your private data for targeted advertisement.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There is just going to be too much DLC creep soon, and buying in is going to be harder and harder even with editions that comes with the DLC that is already years old. I want to recommend this game because I love it and I want as many friends as possible to play it with, but the buy in is just too much. Without a sale going on you're currently paying $50 for the current Expansion Pass 3, $50 for the base game, and ~$125 for the older DLC expansion content you cannot get from expansion packs…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It makes me sad, but... I cannot recommend this game. 👎😔 Yeah yeah I know, I've played it for 500 hours. Actually it's much more than that (offline). So - here's why I did. You really can "create the empire of your wildest fantasies"! There are so many possibilities. If you have a favorite fantasy trope, or even a really weird OC, you can probably make it in this game. I've made shadowy spymaster dragons, deadly Nightmare-riding mongols, lush giantesses that love rivers and salad, bite-sized…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Any time an update hits for this game it is likely to cause your current run to become unstable. As a campaign can take days or weeks this is a big deal. Oh look, they just added 'shiny' units and now I need to restart my 3 week old campaign. The game is great but they need to work on making it work. It should also be noted that for some people the multiplayer just doesn't work, you can initially connect to a multiplayer game, but if you disconnect even once you will never be able to return to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →if you have none of the dlc's its very barebones and lackluster. your telling me your video game costs 110 dollars for it to be a complete experience and thats if its on sale....naw bruv just naw. i bought the base game on sale and im gonna wait them out till the dlc's are all on sale. its just ridiculous.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The base game is kinda bare bones and the DLC are WAY too many and too expensive. If half the DLC was included w/ the base game, it would be a no brainer thumbs up.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I thought i purchased everything to date in the bundle i clicked on (120 AUD including the season pass) only to open the game to find out that there is an expansion pass 3 apparently....... for another 30 AUD.......... scummy business practice.... very scummy. Edit: not 30... the bundle I purchased for over 100 dollars only included pass 1... not 2 and apparently a 3rd.... 70 AUD each... buyer beware.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →DLC bloat. Anti-consumer practices. It was a good game until corporate greed took the wheel. Please have a vision for your games and complete that vision rather than constantly tweaking things to fit your marketing strategies.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The first few runs were fun, but after that you quickly realize that's all there is to the game. No matter how unique your start is, every single run bleeds into each-other. All nations can learn all spells and use about 95% of the units. None of the spells are so wholly unique that they're *that* game changing if you decide to try out different spell paths. Other 4X games have much greater variety and depth in each new game you start, part of which coming from the core of your nation's…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I forgot this is paradox. They're never sell complete game. A la carte and forever milking fans. Stop MILKING me!! My milk dried up.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Aaaaah, Paradox. This company really tries to be both the angel and the devil on my shoulder. Bet lots of other people feel the same way. Anyways. Yes, yes, I will address the ever-present Parad-elephant in the room - their DLC policy. You see it in Stellaris too. They release a solid base game and, if it sells well, they start to release DLC that either add new races in the game or new mechanics - sort of like mini expansions. In AoW4's case, that is new civilizations, new species-bases, new…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Another Paradox Title DLCs the price of a full game. Even CREATIVE ASSEMBLY DLCs are cheaper. Does anyone even try to stay competitive these days or cumsumers will pay anything to get their slop. ♥♥♥♥♥♥ paradox account requirement to play online so they can send you more slop over email... Data harvest because everyone is doing it... ♥♥♥♥♥♥ paradox launcher and game becoming unstable in offline mode. Other than than that its OK.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TL;DL this is a $300 game. Money hungry Publisher(Paradox, not the devs) DLC prices should be $5 not 30. They need to fix their game and stop releasing garbage overpriced DLCs. Last but definitely the least beacuse its an opinion: DLC seem to be priced on how OP they are in game to justify the need to buy it. AKA read the first line again. Gameplay: 5/10 Customization: 8/10 Price: -10/10 In total: 3/30 Your paying $70 for a Demo, the game is released in DLC patchs you gotta pay money for.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Way too much DLC, way too expensive to pay $20 per race to play a game that doesnt even have a working match making for online play.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This cow is dried up. There's just no reason to throw any more money at it since they'd rather put out more DLCs than fix the game or make any improvements. ♥♥♥♥ your expansion passes.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →That was great game until Paradox do Paradox stuff
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is the best game that I don't play. I bought the game on launch, with all the passes, because I thought I'd no-life this game for the rest of the year, in '23. Sadly... I covet happiness via beginning new games, and seldom ever play them enough to make a Twitch streamer blush. I always WANT to buy all the DLC's, and I always WANT to get really invested in this game. I don't even know all the updates and QoL improvements that have happened over the years. All I know is that this game…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's fine, but the base game gets boring quickly. The amount of DLC is at a point where they make the sims look reasonable too. It would cost me over $100 (WITH winter sales!!!) to get all of the DLC I am missing, and from what I can see they really do not add much. 2-3 tomes, a handful of units, some cosmetics, and a different hero type or two is basically what you can expect. Greed is not good, and Paradox is known for DLC spam...but this is beyond the pale. To say that a Sims DLC feels…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Love the game, but too much DLC to afford to keep buying. Greedy
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun game with great replayability with the different culture/tome/leader combinations. but the multiplayer is a mess with frequent desyncs and it doesn't seem like the developers are trying to fix that at all.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun for a few hours, but then it becomes very apparent it was designed as a framework to add endless overpriced DLC. Feels like a Sims game the amount of after purchase gouging in this game

unlabelledView post →I feel like this installment of Age of Wonders is redeeming itself for cuts from previous games in the series, though I still miss the race system from Age of Wonders 1, feels like it has never been quite the same since then. Still, this is a worthy game. A lot of game systems have changed and it doesn't feel as charming as it once did long ago, but they have expanded the game in other ways. Things I miss: Migration not being an evil act. The single unit enchantment spells. Different…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is mega fun and cool...in singleplayer. Multiplayer is a buggy mess. I just did my first mp game with a friend. It de-syncs almost everytime another player finishes a manual battle. A manual battle against another player is just straight-up not happening. It de-syncs after every 2 unit moves. Apparently this has been an issue for years too so i dont understand why its not fixed yet? I love this game but please fix multiplayer thanks <3
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Paradox is a horrible publisher and their business model of chopping up games into endless DLC needs to stop. Don't give them money
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ive had this game on my radar for a long time because I love 4X, but it did not capture me. I would describe it as a combat-focused game with some strategy tacked onto it. Which is fine if you are into that, but I typically play these games for empire management. Everything you do in this game is for bettering the combat. You research combat improvements and you get gear for combat improvements and you build buildings for combat and you clear ruins for combat. As for the combat itself, its…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Age of Wonders 4 expands on the foundations of Master of Magic and blends ideas from earlier AoW games, Civilization, and Heroes of Might & Magic 3 to create a uniquely rich fantasy strategy experience. Honestly, AoW4 was a pleasant surprise for me. While I’ve enjoyed the first two games in the series, the sheer number of society and character customization options in this one left me staring at the screen for a while before even starting my first campaign. That’s not a complaint quite the…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TBH, I think aoe 3 is the better game, which really should not be the case. On pondering why, a couple of points come to mind. 1. The combat seems clunky (from a graphics/fps pov) even on a brand new speced gaming laptop. 2. Biggest gripe, which took a while to realize, is its customization. Now, normally having as many opptions as possible is a good thing, but here it totally robs races of any true character. The best 4x fantasy i ever played, was a civ4 mod call fall from heaven 2. 12 or so…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like this game. I liked planetfall more. I was confused why it was such a downgrade when it came out. Now I see the dlcs are drip fed, expensive, and don't seem to stop. I can't recommend this game because it's for rich people, or people who never spend money on other games. It made me quit because of the fomo, which is unfortunate because it's a good game. I would wait for them to stop releasing dlc, and then eventually put all of it together in a sale that makes sense for these economic…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is fantastic and fun to play with friends, the issue is that you cant play with friends 80% of the time. Its a complete joke that they still release DLC for a game that multiplayer doesn't work and yet they want us to keep spending money on them while they ignore all the complaints
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →great game, gives you so much freedom but the dlcs are expensive
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is cool, the replayability is excellent. The only problem I see is the AI enemies. They're too boring, predictable, and easy, regardless of the difficulty level. I've tried several AI-altering mods, but they're all glitchy. I'd like to see good AI enemies; maybe that's an idea for the next DLC...
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Age of Wonders 4 is one of the strongest modern fantasy 4X strategy games—blending empire-building like Civilization with tactical combat and heavy RPG-style customization. It’s deep, creative, and highly replayable, but not without some rough edges. Incredible faction & empire customization, You can create your own race, culture, and ruler, mix traits like: Undead necromancers, Holy knight empires, Chaos-driven barbarian tribes. The game’s “tome of magic” system replaces traditional tech…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It really is fantastic. I basically LARP in my head playing the game, it is like my own little story generator. I care about my hero's, and try to fulfill their goals. Your hero's have a class, but also have a subclass type sort of where they have personal goals (I'm sure there is a name for the mechanic but I don't know what it is), one of my war lords needed to dominate far lands, then he became depressed and expressed how he wanted to live close to home since his wife and family live in my…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly this game is fantastic. I have literally done 5 playthroughs, each one was completely different First noob playthrough i went with bird mage people, was testing the waters Second one i went with a Massive dragon that summons the undead Third one was probs my favorite, i went with god of the underworld. Went as a massive titan with a subterran society. Did not visit the surface for at least 70 turns Fourth i went for a challeng and decided to do a megacity with a Nature faction, but…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A good game but not a game worth $150. This game has reached "The Sims" level of consumer-hostile pricing.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Season pass pricing is absurdly high compared to content quantity and quality
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm really on the fence with this one. I love AoW. Its the ultimate power fantasy game...but...and this is gonna break my heart, I can't recommend it to anyone. The multiplayer it advertises just flat out doesn't work. People have been complaining for years now, and its still unplayable. And before you say "Oh I'm just here for the single player." Well sorry to tell you, but while fun can be had there, and games can at least be finished, the blatant AI cheating even on the easiest difficult…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Some of the most expensive, thin content DLC you'd ever see. Don't buy anything other than base game and even then, multiplayer doesn't always work.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I started playing board games from Avalon Hills in the 60's, and graduated to computer games in the later 80's and enjoyed them. I have really enjoyed Age of Wonders 4. It is challenging with all the different variants and gives a gamer the chance to create an environment/realm to play in, that matches their style and level. The customizability, makes each game unique with various layouts and factions. It is hard to imagine, ever getting bored of this game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I would buy this game in a heartbeat if it wasn't for the predatory DLC business model that Paradox uses. Buy the game and then pay the same amount every "season" to get DLC. DLC isn't a bad thing but Paradox has you paying 200 - 300% of the base cost of the game to unlock more content. They also have a second 'paywall' in that game content is unlocked based on the number of points you gain for each game you play. And it isn't a few cosmetic items. There is a lot of content that you will never…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have played Civ, Total War (Warhammer 1-3 and 3 kingdoms), and a couple RTS games that i obviously didnt care for or I would remember them. My problem is I get bored super quickly with them and they dont really capture my attention for long. War hammer 3 I have 16 hours in and I have played that game several times and quit. I say this because I have 7 hours in this game in just a single night. I bought the Throne of Blood DLC and the game in the same night. I am hooked. By far my favorite RTS…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game has gradually become my favorite 4X game, and I tend to consider it a modern version of Heroes of Might and Magic. I also highly recommend it to tactical game lovers, as the battle system is based on this format. For me, the first masterstroke is the creation of a 4X game where you actually finish the game. It's not too long, but above all, the pantheon system will make you want to play through the last few turns even when the outcome of the game is already known. The second point…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Seeing everyone I know fall victim to the horse game and I know it'd get me too if I could bring myself to boot up anything that's not Age of Wonders 4
unlabelledView post →I allowed myself ONE game of Age of Wonders 4 to celebrate the successful release of Nighthawks and I’m crawling into bed at 1:35am, having successfully backstabbed, outmanoeuvred and connived my way into victory once again. There’s nothing like the blend of tactical fights + 4X.
unlabelledView post →This game exactly feels as HOMM was back in my childhood. Pretty graphics, many possibilities regarding faction customization. Races have some base traits but you can change them during faction creation as so does the game when it generates your adversaries. I found that the cultures make the base feeling of your walkthrough however tomes (choosable spell books) and the "tech tree" (which gives you passives and some rewards) is what forms your faction so if you take the same tomes the runs tend…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For a Niche game series, Paradox loves to push DLC creep with prices well into what you can entire games for, with 100x the content. We're talking 20 dollars for a single new mechanic, reskinned outfits that are already available for unique NPCs in the base game, and a handful of "new" story chains. The fact that DLCs for this game that are nearly 2-3 months old, aren't going on sale AT ALL, says that Paradox sees this title as a "passive" income that they'll eventually see returns on in the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Buy on sale. The game is very solid and has high replay value, but the dlc price creep is ridiculous.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Multiplayer sync issues frequently corrupt games, resulting in lost save progress after many hours of gameplay. Lots of potential wasted by bad code and dysfunctional software. Don't waste your time.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →DLC is getting obscene. The prices are all individually insane.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Now, with that out of the way? I gotta be very honest with everyone here, 4X is not a genre I'm all that familiar with, I had never played a Civ game and it seemed like the entire genre just slipped by me, the only other ones I've played were Age of Wonders: Planetfall and Age of Wonders 4 (briefly)
unlabelledView post →So I had a really fun idea inspired by a friend on Discord a bit ago. (thank you @nilly-chilly.bsky.social for the idea.) I'm gonna do a playthrough of a 4X game and give updates about how it's going in a narrative style. Could be fun. The question then: Age of Wonders 4 or Stellaris?
unlabelledView post →I have put a lot of time into Age of Wonders 4 and I feel I am in a position to give it a brief but clear review. If you like fantasy, turn based combat, and strategy, I believe you will like this game. Almost all of my hours put into this game were six months after release, before most of the dlc had ever been added. It was a complete game at launch. How you build your faction significantly impacts how your faction plays in game. None of the choices here are inconsequential. The developers…
