What people are saying
Overwhelmingly positive, with praise for its timeless gameplay and remaster.
Players overwhelmingly praise Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition as a masterful remaster of a classic, calling it "the gold standard by which all other Real-Time Strategy (RTS) games are measured" and "a master class in what a remaster should be." Many highlight its enduring appeal, with one player noting it "has been my companion for most of my life" and another calling it "simply the GOAT." [3][10][13][15]
However, some players report significant issues, including a recent update that "deleted all my custom scenarios" and another that "enables voice chat by default" without warning, raising privacy concerns. Others criticize the Mac version's lack of cross-platform multiplayer, alleging that the whole mac version is cut off from the multiplayer community. [31][33][32]

I still have vivid memories of being five years old, sitting on my dad’s lap while he played and showed me the basics. After a while, he’d let me take over, and I remember how exciting that felt. At that age, it genuinely felt like magic. My dad’s answer to everything was knights. Build more stables, train more knights. Looking back, I probably have this game to thank for…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Background: I've got over 1,600 hours into the Definitive Edition of the game, with most of my games being team games, but also 100+ games in 1v1. I've completed all the Europe campaigns on Hard difficulty, and hope to finish the rest. Here's my sincere thoughts on the good and the bad, and what new players should know. For reference, I also love StarCraft (but I absolutely suck at StarCraft) Pros: Obviously, I wouldn't have this amount of time logged in if I didn't already love the game. I…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's been months since the developers have broken the Wine/CrossOver/Sikarugir compatibility for those on Mac with no helpful responses. Given the lack of cross-play with Mac, which my friends are PC-based, I cannot recommend this game with the non-existent support from developers, especially their willingness to be highly dismissive given they believe they've solved the Mac issue by the Mac-specific release. Warning to those on Mac, this game is not compatible with Windows/console players.…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love this game, but I have one major complaint. Steam labels the game with "Cross-Platform Multiplayer", so I recommended it to my friend who plays on Mac (I play on PC). This label is a lie. The game does not offer native compatability across Mac & PC. Previously you could use 3rd party software called CrossOver to run the PC version on Mac, but due to a recent game update in June 2026, the game now lags and crashes when playing via CrossOver. DO NOT BUY if you are playing on a Mac.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →8.5/10 I think games like aoe2, wc3, sc2 will carry the rts genre for at least 5 to 10 years more, so if you are thinking to get it to get into RTS this is it. The balance is excellent, the civ variety is huge, and the gameplay still rewards skill and knowledge over gimmicks. Single player and multiplayer are both strong.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What can I say? I bought this game in 1999... I'm 50 years old now in 2026, and it's still being patched and improved. It's divine.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Age of Empires II has been my companion for most of my life, starting in my early childhood and still going strong with the Definitive Edition I play today. It’s much more than simple entertainment; it feels like the core of my life. Every match feels like returning to an old home — the…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The original Age of Empires II (Age of Kings) had a nice musical score, but at the time, one of the only reliable ways to play high-quality audio was via CD audio. So the game CD's first "track" is its data, and the rest of the disc is a regular audio CD of the game's musical score.

However, they decided to restrict multiplayer to mac only, so the whole mac version is cut off from the multiplayer community which is the reason this 20+ year old game is still relevant today. My friends don't have macs, I'd like to play with them. Age of Empires II runs under Asahi Linux, and supports multiplayer with others quite reliably. Until Feral publishes a good explanation of why cross-platform multiplayer is…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've been playing this game with a group of friends for years now. The dev team does an amazing job of keeping it fresh. Most of the new civs they add are well thought out, pretty balanced, and unique. This is classic RTS fun at its best. They just don't make games like this anymore - I'm so thankful that AOE2 is still alive and well, going stronger than ever.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was initially reluctant of this version, being so used to the graphics of the original. I've always felt the graphics of AoE2 held up very well for its age. With that said, after playing some time I probably prefer the updated graphics. It's faithful to the original while also adding some welcome changes, such as a graphical indication of how depleted a gold mine is. The biggest thing for me is the new civilizations, This game has been out since 1999 and is still receiving big updates and…

I hate missions that are time-limited by the way, that's way the rating is lower, besides all the DLCs are fantastic and really unique and fun, don't let the "villains" lie to you, lol I still have about 100 achievements left, because I'm obviously crazy, I want them all (evil laugh), but at least it's…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The latest update enables voice chat by default. There is no warning, and it is not push to talk. You have to go into the options to turn it off. Clearly, MS continues to have no clue what "privacy" and "respect" mean.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you are looking for a game that hates Turkic history, you've come to the right place. Not only Turks are getting mocked how the reason why they could establish such empires or kingdoms is because they got lucky instead of being competent or strong but also in other campaigns Turks are seen as the villian of the whole story. I've sent a couple of complaints on the webpage regarding this issue. I mean what would you expect from biggots who think Huns are not Turkic aswell.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Lack of controller support. This is not an issue for most people, but they added it for Xbox and it works flawlessly. The console version is cross-platform with the PC version as well. Yet, somehow, no controller support here. The only thing I can do is complain and hope they listen. So... here I am: please add controller support.

I still remember jumping onto the MSN Gaming Zone, sitting in the lobbies chatting with other players, waiting for games to fill up. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After 500 hours I can confidently say this is a really good remake/remaster buzzword slop of the original Age of Empires 2. Having played the 2013 version extensively, changes to the game have been mostly for the betterment of the experience and not changing for changing's sake: "If it works, then don't fix it." The Definitive Edition is exactly what I wanted from a modern remake. It keeps that classic AoE2 feel intact while adding modern graphics, quality of life improvements, new content, active support, and overall just making the game smoother to play. A lot of older games lose what made them special when they get remade, but this one didn’t. It still…
