As I played though, my excitement withered to disappointment, and then to resentment. This has been a thoroughly unpleasant game to play as well as to read. This is not only because the plot is sci-fi magical anime nonsense, but also because of irritating puzzles and generally bad design decisions. Design and Sound: The font is hideous…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you enjoy plot based (NOT romance based) VNs and adventure games whose puzzles can get to ridiculous levels of difficulty and "logic", then yes, this was a fun game. Honestly, anyone sane playing this is doing it while staring at a translated walkthrough, and I have intense pity for the people who had to play the original Japanese version and try to figure all this out in the first place. Each character has her own problems and her own arc, and they don't really bond as a team or share…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a puzzle/escape visual novel similar to the Zero Escape series. Pros: * Has a bunch of fun puzzles. If you like math/number puzzles especially this game is great. * The storyline is captivating and mysterious, with a variety of paths and endings. I found that I was really looking forward to progressing to see more of the plot. * The music and voice acting is pretty good. * This release has a hint system that can be pretty helpful. Cons: * Some puzzles are incredibly obtuse. Due to the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →When playing this game, my opinions were all over the place. First, all of the characters are easily hateable. That's not to say they don't have good points, but it's hard to say I really liked any of them. In some ways that's part of the story. And as for the story, most aspects of what's going on makes absolutely zero sense, which threw me off for large portions of the game. However by the end of the game, most of those loopholes were closed, which made that confusion bearable. The…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →finished Abyss of the Sacrifice, probably one of the best escape games i’ve played so far. it’s an escape game first, sf visual novel setting second. so if you’re looking for a narrative game, it’ll be disappointing and frustrating. but damn is it good. store.steampowered.com/app/1442160/...

Midpoint update I like the how characters draw you into the mysterious story. The art does justice to the girls. The hint system works well but one or two of the puzzles are very hard to decipher. Update I have played the final chapter. It was well worth playing. I liked the ending.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Abyss of the Sacrifice is a visual novel with playable adventure game "escape room" segments. There are no choices in the VN or adventure segments, so you get different endings by playing various chapters in different orders (characters will make decisions based on what they know from previous chapters for example). This is an interesting idea but it does make the game feel kind of fragmented and weird, as most chapters are their own separate vignettes with a self-contained story arc, so it's…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I bought this because I loved the Nonary games (999, Virtue's Last Reward and Zero Time Dilemma) and the Danganronpa trilogy, and was looking for something similar - a crazy and violent anime visual novel interrupted by puzzle / escape room like sequences. This game indeed does scratch that itch, and I really don't consider it to be bad at all.... But Steam only allows for a thumbs up or down, and my thumb goes down because it's just nowhere near as good as the aforementioned games are and I…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The plot seems interesting enough, but the puzzles themselves are legitimately breaking me. The developers would've fit right in with 80s era Sierra adventure games like King's Quest just in terms of how utterly moon brained some of the solutions are. Doesn't help that all the text you see in the puzzles or illustrations is in Cyrillic either. I'm going to power through it as a point of pride, but I honestly wish I had never started in the first place.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What is this game? This game is a sequence of escape rooms packed into a visual novel with branching paths. The visual novel aspect is decent and unravelling the backstory of the foundation is engaging enough. As a puzzle game, the main problem this game suffers from is the wildly varying quality of the puzzle rooms. There are a lot of escape rooms in the game - around 40. All of them are byte-sized problems you can solve in half an hour or so - and some of them are truly great. There are…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The story takes a while to get going but once you start putting together the pieces of the puzzle the experience you get is up there with the best in the genre like the Zero Escape series. The puzzles are a bit hit or miss, with some being completely cryptic and obtuse while others being absolutely brilliant.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →You should totally play this game if you are fan of Zero Escape series, maybe buy it for full price even. Still, you should not await for "hidden cult classic" stuff here, it's more of nice try to employ unique concept, but game fails a lot. Bad stuff: - Plot is given via fragments, making it harder to follow and somewhat feeling random (characters were busy with one stuff, now they busy with other stuff, one girl died, nobody really cares in next fragment). - Puzzles are following quite a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Beware of the ugly AI slop backgrounds. So, I bought ABYSS OF THE SACRIFICE spontaneously on sale because, from what I've seen in the trailer, it reminded me a lot of the Nonary games. I'm not too deep in yet, but I must say the AI slop in this game makes it insanely unappealing. I don't know if all backgrounds were generated with AI, but it's very obvious that the hospital in the "Father" chapter is made with AI. You don't need to be a professional to realize that the blur, inconsistent…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I strongly recommend this VN! Pleasing art, engaging story, immersive music, and multiple character routes. This VN has it all. If you're looking for a post-apocalyptic survival with tense atmosphere, psychological horror elements, and puzzle solving (or anything that has the name "Zero Escape"), you'll enjoy what this VN has to offer. Talking about the music in particular, I got vibes from both Corpse Party and I Walk Among Zombies. It could just be a coincidence, but I wouldn't be surprised…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a great science fiction story with a ton of interesting paths and deeply emotional, cathartic moments. Awesome setting and fantastic twists and turns, especially towards the end. However, all of it is locked behind a puzzle game. I did not know this when I bought the game. The story kept me going. All puzzles are hit or miss with wildly varying difficulty levels. Sometimes you feel like a genius. Most times you feel like a Neanderthal. Expect to be frustrated. Take breaks as needed.…

While it originates from an earlier handheld release, the game's unique structure and compelling narrative help it remain engaging for modern audiences who enjoy…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As this is a visual novel, I won’t explain why it’s a great one — it’s self-explanatory for anyone who knows. +1 Positive review from my end to do my duty!

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Now that I finished it, I have to say that this game ironically has some of the hardest puzzles I've ever encountered. The kind of puzzles that designers would be scared to put in their game. I like that a lot You should definitely play this if you enjoy the sweet nectar of under-the-radar mediocrity. And I do mean that in a good way. I could be starting Baldurs Gate 3, or Kingdom Come 2, or finish FF Rebirth 7, but instead I played this. That's saying something ====== Alright, I'm into it.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →spend a decent amount of money and time and don't like it at all. the ui sucks, and hints are not quite helpful. way to many mysteries embedded along the story and it was easy for me to get tired of staying curious. with the troublesome UI and frustrating (sometimes unreasonable) puzzles, I simply had no empathy with any of the main character nor with the story. NOT RECOMMEND
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game. its similar to 999 you'll definitely need a guide and dont expect too much out of the story

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There are clearly some issues with the escape room puzzles. I can't imagine people finding some of the items you have to interact with in the original PSP version considering how they are basically invisible even in this "HD" version. And even with the hint section you WILL have to play this with a walkthrough. There's no way around it. The story isn't amazing either, but still, I have to recommend this game. I became absorbed in it and I blazed through it in just a few days. The characters…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty solid puzzle VN - originally for the PSP, the device of the best puzzle vns. The puzzles could have used some more finetuning in terms of markers indicating where you can click on objects. The hints are balanced, but often far too vague. The story is heavily fragmented and ties together in the end with (big) gaps in between each chapter stage Give it a go if you liked Zero Escape and want more - play the Zero escape series if you havn't.. they are far superior. 8/10 ~20-30hrs playtime
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was looking for an experience similar to Zero Escape, I didn't find it here. Event narration is disjointed, constantly interrupted by flashbacks (or worse, flashbacks with bad puzzles) and nonsensical technobabble. It features an all-female anime girls cast with completely generic and forgettable designs that feel completely out of place and hard to relate to. This VN probably has the most horrible text font and color choice I've ever seen, badly contrasting with all backgrounds. It doesn't…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly one of the worst puzzle games I've played in recent memories. You may see this and think '3 hours into the game, whats he on about?' Thats because in Olgas third chapter you have a wooden mosaic pattern box puzzle to solve where you need to move the pattern to make the letter T and look behind to press a button but thats where it ends as the game doesnt register that you are pressing the button and instead you getting a repeated text 'It's a hole' over and over again. Restarting the…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bit confused on some of the finer plot points, but good game overall. Some of the puzzles were a bit . . . obtuse to me, but I'm not a smart person either. I like how it combined a visual novel with room escape. 100 achivo gain, very little trouble there.
