47 Ronin
Kai—an outcast—joins Oishi, the leader of 47 outcast samurai. Together they seek vengeance upon the treacherous overlord who killed their master and banished their kind. To restore honour to their homeland, the warriors embark upon a quest that challenges them with a series of trials that would destroy ordinary warriors. From TMDB

This is a rare Katei Toki paper film print that included a soundtrack to accompany the film. We still have work to do on this film but excited to see the results!"

unlabelledView post →new episode of the podcast is out so you know what that means: time for all the things that got cut 1) Rinko Kikuchi (The Witch in 47 Ronin) stars as Bang Bang in my favourite film The Brothers Bloom, where she blows up a weeb played by Ram Bergman (briefly an exec producer on White Horse/Conquest)
unlabelledView post →Watched 47 Ronin, starring Keanu Reeves and Hiroyuki Sanada, tonight. I enjoy this style of action movie so I liked it. Worth checking out if you enjoy fantasy action movies. I love them so I figured I'd at least be entertained. Maybe The Swordsman next if I'm up for a subbed movie.
unlabelledView post →My take is that ripping off a streaming giant for millions is cool and shouldn’t be illegal, but making a bad 47 Ronin movie should land you in the prison from Face/Off.
unlabelledView post →I am a big fan of the documentary Side by Side, where Keanu talks to different directors and cinematographers (including Lynch and Mann and others) about digital vs film, and this now-convicted guy is randomly there in part because Keanu was shooting 47 Ronin at the time. Anyway see Side by Side
unlabelledView post →If you watch 47 Ronin (2013), the rabbithole you go down learning about director Carl Rinsch's descent into drug-fueled psychosis during filming, being removed from the project during editing and reshooting, and eventually his wife divorcing him over it all, is more dramatic than the film itself. /1

unlabelledView post →I'm half-watching that shit 47 Ronin with Keanu. Man, that could've been a cool film. I legit think there's room for a Hollywood take on the story -- there's been countless adaptations already, there is room for a different take with a good cast like Reeves, Asano, Kikuchi, and Sanada. Oh well tho!

unlabelledView post →Gonna start the long film by Kenji Mizoguchi, "the 47 Ronin". 📽️ I am curious how it will turn out as it was made during a period of pro-war propaganda films in Japan but it's by Mizoguchi who in what I've seen has been critiquing Japan. NW:
unlabelledView post →I don't know about that- Some of the longest movies ever made were created at the dawn of film. There's an entire film serial that's about 12hrs long, to start, and there's a cut of The 47 Ronin that's over *40.*

unlabelledView post →This is way crazier than a Hollywood take on Chūshingura (47 Ronin), which was entertaining but not spectacular (Keanu Reeves and Hiroyuki Sanada do the heavy lifting in the film). It was a box office bomb, but Netflix made a sequel to it so they could recoup what Rinsch stole from them. WILD. /end

It gets panned for being "unrealistic", because it's ostensibly based on a true story. It's a fantasy movie. And a beautiful one! It is to the 47 Ronin story what 300 was to the Battle of Thermopylae.

unlabelledView post →If you took out the names this sounds like the backstory for a Braveheart or 47 Ronin-style revenge movie. Deposed for refusing to turn your sword over to the king who would surrender it to a foreign ruler. A good director could go ham with that.

The two main differences are: 1. 1941 Japan was an independent willing Nazi ally, but 1943 Denmark was occupied 2. 47 Ronin was propaganda, but this is a thinly-veiled anti-Nazi film
