60 of 114 · most liked firstwait, so the real reason the resident evil mansion has all those traps and puzzles in it in is because this game has been a dungeon crawler this entire time? This entire time it was another work inspired by Wizardry? We have Resident Evil and Dunmeshi and Souls games because of the same game?

unlabelledView post →first up is Wizardry, probably the single most influential video game of all time. almost every game can trace part its lineage back to wizardry, and also then begin to evolve back into wizardry as they add in RPG elements, like the unkillable crab of video games:
unlabelledView post →Wizardry Daphne is a good dungeon-crawler, the devs clearly love Wizardry a lot... but it's also a gacha game. It's "free", but if you wanna dungeon-crawl old-school style without monetization & game-as-a-service drama, here's a short thread with some alternatives with a similar vibe🧵

It's a 1995 immersive sim led by David Bradley (Wizardry V-VII), Warren Spector & Harvey Smith - a forgotten stepping stone towards Deus Ex!
unlabelledView post →more indie game devs should make dungeon crawlers like Wizardry 8 and Ultima Underworld It's a fantastic business idea, and it would make me, personally, very happy You'd sell tens of copies!
unlabelledView post →On a mechanical and technical level this is a really well done port of the first Wizardry game. The art is well done and does a good job of providing a "face" to everything instead of having it be a white blobs in the vague shape of a fantasy creature. The surface town is made of actual buildings instead of letters you type to get to services that you need. The music is nice, it has a low fantasy feel instead of being extremely bombastic with an orchestra which I feel fits the premise of the…

QUEST 64 !

unlabelledView post →i don’t really have much interest in gamedev but i think if i’d been around in the early 80s i’d have made millions of dollars making some bullshit spreadsheet game called Illuminar’s Returne which would nonetheless be scoffed at in computer magazines as “Wizardry for repressed homosexuals”
unlabelledView post →So I booted up Wizardry Gaiden 4 tonight because it's the last SNES entry and this game looks like a response to Japan not being huge on 6-8 but still wanting the new races and classes So they give you all the races and classes from 6 in Gaiden and then have game use Wizardry V mechanics

unlabelledView post →What's the oldest game you ever saw getting a patch? Wizardry I, from 1981, got a fan patch this year! Yes, the original, Apple II release: www.zimlab.com/wizardry/pro... Some gameplay changes / rebalances, but mostly fixing bugs & adding QoL improvements from later versions, like pool/div gold.
unlabelledView post →This remake of a classic 80s game is pure nostalgia. Technically its excellently put together. Problem is that its a 1981 game. I've played all the big dungeon crawlers (love the genre) but this one is just too simple, repetitive and boring for a 2026 title. Also I can buy both Grimrocks for the price of this game so its crazy overpriced. I had fun creating a good party and then steamrolling the first level but there's just not enough mechanics to keep me interested. If you played it on your…

unlabelledView post →As someone who has completed the NES version of Wizardry I was ripe to fall in love with this game. The visuals are beautiful, the mechanics are faithful, but the bugs are HEINOUS! How they can still sell a game where sometimes the enemies just stop taking actions, leaving you unable to continue on and soft locking the game? Even while in town you can end up being unable to navigate menus through no fault of your own. I want to recommend this game, I want to love it. I want all the Wizardry…

unlabelledView post →Given its prominence in Japanese CRPG otaku circles, it was inevitable that there'd be a Wizardry anime. Shochiku Fuji's Wizardry OVA, based on the first game, Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord (1981), arrived a year after Lodoss War's (1990), and was probably seen as riding its coat tails.
unlabelledView post →If you can appreciate Wizardry for what it is and when it came from, this had the potential to be a decent modernization of the classic. Unfortunately it's been abandoned by the devs and left with bugs that were apparently reported and known about 2 years ago. There hasn't been an update since 2024. I've experienced soft-locking in combat and save file corruption, and I've only played for 4 hours. The game was in early access for quite some time, but it still feels like it should be there.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played this game 45 years ago! (The 1st dungeon crawl ever made, I think.) And never completed it... And now that it is remade with the exact same mazes and some very nice improvements and graphics, I will finally be able to finish this game before I die. And then my life will be complete... Sweet! I win! Finally... Very satisfying! Hmmm. Now what's next?
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Interesting to think that 40 years later, Wizardry and Ultima are still drawing inspiration from each other. The latest Wizardry game, Wizardry Variants Daphne features a very Ultima-like personality quiz

unlabelledView post →Do not buy this game. Not because it's the original Wizardry, which I love with all my heart *because* it's soul-crushingly difficult and grindy and doesn't hold your hand, but because the damn thing keeps freezing and forcing me to kill it via task manager. It's criminal to charge $35 for this bug-ridden mess.

unlabelledView post →Love the game, but during my very short playtime I ran into multiple game breaking bugs. Twice a lost a character during leveling up (character simply got overwritten by a level 0 nameless character). Therefore, cannot recommend.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really like this game however there is a bug that sometimes occurs when leveling up that causes the character to completely break. all stats go to zero and the character picture goes blank. no way to recover the character so you have to start a new one. It makes the game unplayable... Note: the bug only seems to happen if you are using the mouse in conjunction with the keyboard so don't use the mouse!

unlabelledView post →Overall: 7 / 10 (would be 9/10 if not for unresolved bugs). Similar to the original in being a brutally unforgiving game. Unlike the original; the player can tell what is going on around them. The graphics, music, gameplay, and algorithms are SIGNIFICANTLY improved. Wizardry is not a game for all people. It's not really a game for most people. But for the niche few of us out there who enjoy an 'olde-timey' dungeon crawl; this one is DEFINITELY for us. There's a few bugs, but all of the…

unlabelledView post →Well this is the original wizardry for better or worse. While they added some QOL improvements to the game it's still the same old game that came out on the Apple 2 back in the 80's. I mean that literally, as this is basically a graphical overhaul with the actual original game running underneath, again with some quality of life improvements the musical score from the NES and SNES ports have been redone and added to this version, you can cast the map spell and get the actual map of the floor…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game has an issue where it freezes when attempting to reposition your characters in the tavern. This is a known issue since 2024 that forces you to hard close the game from the task manager.

unlabelledView post →This seems like a decent enough adaptation of Wizardry as long as you know what you're getting into with the game. As a piece of software it's still deeply flawed in spite of being in early access for a really long time and it seems as if they're done updating it. I haven't experienced them myself but there are apparently issues with save corruption as well as steam cloud overwriting save slot 1. The game is plagued with crashes and bugs but only if you control it with a mouse??? Constant…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →30 mins into playing all of my characters including backups have been completely wiped and I now must abandon this save file and start over. I can confirm that this is indeed the old school wizardry experience.
