It has the same gameplay loop of building your settlement, going out on runs, getting into HP/Stress based combat and juggling loot vs safety. In fact, it's very difficult to say much of anything at all about Whispers of the Eyeless without immediate comparisons to Darkest Dungeon because it has almost the same DNA. That said, there are a lot of bad DD clones out there,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →UPD 23.12.2025 TLDR Everything is the same or of a different flavor but still the same. Almost a full year passed. I deleted my saves to check this out again from the start. Played 7 hours. Twice as much as on initial release. Might contain some errors, but idc anymore. 1. It's the same. About 4 hrs gameplay. Can't be bothered to check other gamemods bc points 3 to 9. 2. Same. Added extra level. +2 more, but they are locked and no explaining are they in the game even. 3. Changed, the results…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good Lord, this combat system. Like, why is combat even in this game? If you're going to put zero effort into making fights fun or balanced, why even bother to include it? It's so unbelievably bad. Refunded.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The gameplay mechanics arent very deep you get a stat boost and kill an enemy. Its as basic as it gets. charging 20 Euros for this slop is criminal
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Do I recommend anyone to buy this at the time of writing this? No. I do however recommend whitelisting this for the full release. The combat is quite fun, the story writing is.. fresh? its the right word for it but doesn't quite fit the theme. Pros: + Great voice acting all around + Art style is well done + The rougelite combat is enjoyable + Base upgrades are very reminiscent of Darkest Dungeon but feel much better + Big fan of getting permanent boons built into your character, i do hope the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game. I do want to point out how mesmerizing and great on the eyes the art is for this game. really fits the style and is just so refreshing. This game really lets you do whatever you want as the player. you have multiple ways to complete tales by choosing what way you want to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Finished the campaign on Normal. Overall it was a good time, and it definitely scratched my base-building-through-dungeon-crawling-with-a-fun-narrative itch, but there were problems. The first thing I noticed was that the subtitles were frequently missing and/or out of sync. This got better as the game went on, but the first hour or so was bad. Second, there are a handful of UI issues: inconsistencies between similar menus, attention markers that do not go away, etc. And third, the combat…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Crashes reliably on loading into the game, so reliably I haven't seen the game. Judging by the minimum performance requirements and another review this is due to a horrific lack of optimization.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Still can't find a better strategy than being naked and beating insane women, eldritch horrors, and poor people with a stick 9/10 would beat people to death again while the narrator laughs softly in my ear
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The first time I tried to play the game it never loaded after I selected my difficulty. Even after I opened taskmaster and closed steam entirely it was still saying that it was still open. Had to restart my entire computer to try again. The second time I played it I didn't get to play it for very long. It didn't seem too fun or interesting but I hadn't really gotten to see the full game play yet so I was still playing to get a better feel for if I wanted to play the game or get a refund. I…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →You can tell that a lot of care went into this game. Everything in it speaks to the love and effort of the devs. The gameplay loop is enjoyable and addictive in the best manner of these types of games. It's got some new and interesting ideas that I feel like anyone who played Darkest Dungeon or any of the many roguelites would thoroughly enjoy. This game is the best incarnation of indie game development, and it deserves a look.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like it. The concept is good, the vision sharp, the atmosphere dense and mature. I would recommend giving it a shot. But I think there may be a bit of scope creep in the systems. Certain mechanics don't fit together quite right, and it feels like there's a lot of currency bloat in the simulation/cult building layer that could be consolidated into a more elegant, more unified system. But the voice acting is stellar, the scenario weighty, and it's overall a fine experiment in the dramatic…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Interesting game, might be hard to get into at first but gets better as you learn the mechanics more. Worth a shot for the price point
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am part of the early playtest team for Whispers of the Eyeless. I am not paid, I am a fan of the developer and have enjoyed his previous work. Whispers is a rougelike RPG based on a powerful single-character that the player can endlessly customize. There are dozens of builds, each with strengths and weaknesses, which will give every playthrough a distinct feel and flavor. The high replayability, combined with the complex cult-management system makes for an engaging experience. Losing is no…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I just wanted to support a long time creator in the warhammer community. But, i was very pleasantly surprised of how good the game actually is. It hit the craving for dark themed a little bit of everything (rpg, management, story, combat, etc.) style game. Overall, i absolutely do not regret buying this game and recommend it, if you have that craving :-) GJ Venris and team!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Incredibly dull. This combat is incredibly bland, the resources management is boring. Your decisions just don't seem to make a difference. It's going for a darkest dungeon like feel without any consequences to your decisions at all.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pros: Good story, lore, sfx and voice acting. Cons: Absolutely insane RNG(5% enemy's evasion isn't what it seems, seek Madness guidance for details). Force changes your system display resolution if game crashes or you Alt+Tab and leave the game unfocused long enough. It's irritating, never seen something like that in any of the games i played before. No advanced graphics settings. This may sound hilarious, but somehow this game eats up your gpu memory as candies if you didn't turn…

Zero help and zero meaningful instructions. ive played around 10 hours before understanding anything about the game. the game makes no sense. all you do is fail until you unlock daily income of all of the resources needed to grow all of the Rooms that unlock more and more skills and rooms and income. i can not understand how i unlocked these skilled or anything it makes now sense. The art is awsome its the shame the story doesn’t…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →No effing clue what's going on. No tutorial, obscure references to doing things that have no meaning to me, and long, long, long cut scenes that don't illuminate any aspect of the gameplay. Requested refund.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you ever. EVER pick up this game. Do not ever play on windowed mode. Hell, don't ever do anything BUT play this game as the last time I tabbed out of this game it not only crashed so hard it needed TASK Manager to fix, but it also COMPLETELY bricked my Steam. To the point of where I had to manually uninstall it and purge every single file even RELATED to Steam! I don't know what kind of game does that, and I've never seen that happen before but rest assured I am NOT throwing my entire Steam…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wow, I'm very surprised at this. The art and presentation is really good. But what ultimately made me hang this up with the RPG combat. Its awful. First, the combat music is repetitive and uninspired. Second, each combat is unnecessarily long, with most of your actions spamming the 'next attack turn' key'. Its really disappointing, because the rest of the game is right up my ally on its management gameplay. I can usually tolerate less than ideal combat, but this was enough to make me…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have played Four hours and at the beginning it was hard to follow the game mechanics and all the UI menus but once I got more familiar with the menus and what I could with them I am seeing the game open up for me. The cinematic choices are nice and the challenge of managing the cult and getting to make questionable decisions through the "Callings" you send you disciples on add some spice to it for sure. I am playing on Normal mode and haven't died yet (I don't know if this is…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As of Feb 1 2025, I don't recommend this title. The available amount of campaign is too short and the other game mode is nigh impossible. I did enjoy what campaign is present but apparently the completed game is further out than I expected.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →HIDDEN GEM OF 2026! When a Game Treats Every Choice Like a Painting Some games tell you a story. Some games let you make choices. This game does something different — it illustrates your descent. Every sacrifice, every ritual, every decision you make isn’t just logged in a journal or reduced to text… it’s brought to life through hand-drawn artwork. And not reused artwork. Not generic placeholders. Custom, atmospheric, deeply unsettling illustrations that reflect what you’ve actually done.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Work in Progress? Yes. Potential? Huge For less the half of the cost of a so-called "Triple A" game get in on the ground floor of something. A Nightmare disguised as a game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An unpolished gem, oozing with passion. The learning curve is steep, but rewarding. This game made me feel like I was playing the Ancestor of Darkest Dungeon in the best way possible
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nearly three hours in and so far this is a beauty. Absolutely dripping in theme and atmosphere, the art is simply outstanding. There's a lot of gameplay systems already, and whilst most are in their base forms due to the early access it's clear that this game is going to build into a play-it-your-way with a ton of replayability. Many of them will need further fleshing out, usability additions (tooltips etc), and interactions with other systems, and I'm sure that's all coming up. The potential…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I quite enjoyed this game, managed to take it slow and completed Chapter 1 in about 4 hrs. I'll come back when the other chapters are ready. Some minor bug issues (mostly subtitles...) but nothing game breaking. The dungeons and upgrades are fun, and I enjoyed the base/cult building. All in all, I recommend - will be coming back to finish when it is out of early access.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its more like a autobattler not tactical round based combat, feels very blant very fast. equiment is kind of boring. to many systems are in place so the game cant shine on any system. it was a present so i had to keep it. EDIT for the 1.0.... the combat is still amazingly boring, no new weapeons, armor or trinkets. basicly u could autofight everything. even the "basebuilding" part of the game is boring. i would refund if i could
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I appreciate the game in early access. The in game choices are impactful and multi-faceted. If you like the cult genre this is about the best I've found for an RPG. The pushing of combat into lower levels (greater difficulty) is a great choice pattern as you have to figure out if the reward is better than a failure. The best part is the development of skills via the cult perspective and impact on the storyline. Choices matter. I put many hours into this and cannot wait for full release. A…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Came back for a second try after some updates. Devs haven't yet solved the issues people have with the combat, but their reply says they have changes in mind. The combat right now is dreadful with each engagement reducing your max sanity until the MAX is 1 which is instant death while the enemy still has a max of 70 and triple your health and constant evasion AND disables your attacks and all 'gifts' which rarely have a use EXCEPT in these back-to-the-wall engagements require 25 sanity to use…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ive never donated for your mods. This is my thanks. Best wishes
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game needs improvements. It has some really good art and lore, especially if you're into Call of Cthulhu vibes. However, the gameplay feels confusing due to a lack of explanations for many mechanics. The strategy aspect is also very limited, particularly at the start, making your choices in combat feel meaningless. Your only real option is to attack. Also, about 60-80% of the gifts, which are like small passive buffs you receive after each fight, feels completely useless. Though i imagine…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty new to the genre, in fact it's the first game of this kind i played, but this is pretty fun. Introduction, the only reason i bought this game was to support a long time creator in the warhammer community, hence it's probably the only reason why I know of this game at all. Coming from that I was pleasantly surprised as to how much fun the game actually, to the point of "let's check this out!" to an all nighter playing for 5,4h straight without noticing. As for the game mechanics,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As others have noted, this game has tons of appreciable feel, lore, ambiance, and voice acting. There are some truly unique gameplay mechanics (/settings/objectives) that make this project a real gem. It appears Act I can be finished farily quickly, but they've just released a roguelike game mode that offers much replayabiliy to pass the time until the next acts are released. It's definitely early access but has tremendous potential, and it has all the signs of being on the right track. Old…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →game was not what I was expecting but was happily surprised. combat took some getting used to but I like it. setting is cool, narrator is great. i thought the spanish translations were bad but then i relized the game is just strange and actually there quite good, cant wait for more content
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't know why I like this game but I do. The RPG elements are very simplistic but fun. The game feels like it is challenging but fair. If you want to grind you can if you want a bigger challenge you can have that too. The art style is very good and gives you lots of options to express what kind of cult leader you want to be. As a full game it is so far worth the money. The devs seem to be listening so here are my suggestions in my small amount of play time Please add more mechanics - This…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There was a lot to like here but just way way WAAAY too many systems. Like you play a game like Darkest Dungeon or StS or frankly most other good strategy roguelikes and they have several systems to wrap your head around. This game just has way too much of it. Every screen has several systems all expecting your attention and it's just tedious. Consider it this way. The main game play element is as simple as: Pick 2 actions and a passive per turn. and watch the fight play out. There is a bit…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I feel like there is a good game in here but I just haven't been able to find it. The fights are very repetitive and there isn't much thought that needs to go into them. There are very few choices to be made outside combat either. The RNG gods are heavy and I don't think the developers understand %'s. Multiple fights an enemy with 10% evasion dodged 5 attack in a row. All in all there are so few choices that you need to make that actually affect that direction of the game that it feels like the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am going to intentionally oversimplify this: Dying in the tutorial is not fun.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A fun turn based strategy game, a bit of a learning curve at the start managing resources, but enjoyable combat.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good atmosphere. Average gameplay. High quality soundtracks. The gameplay is interesting only for the first 5 hours. After that only the story keeps you playing.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →They've built themselves an interesting world here, tempered with incredible artwork, some great writing, and excellent narration. Gameplay is generally fun, and definitely falls into the "just one more turn" category of addiction. Combat is pretty bare bones, but enjoyable because of its brevity and brutal imagery. The music is good. Suitable for the atmosphere they're trying to maintain. The story is quite thrilling, helped greatly by the strength of the narration. I am unsure of…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →1st impression few hours in, story telling is very immersive and well drawn out. However the dialogue constantly lags behind or never show what was being said at all. But that is the only reason to dislike at the monent and hopefully they can notice and fix the issue, otherwise I am very immersed in the story so far.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's really fresh. You run a cult and try to make people believe in your gods. Everything about this game reminds me of darkest dungeon, except for the combat. Managing your cult is like DD because you slowly build rooms and recruit people and there is brilliant narration voiced over. Also there are minor rpg elements because the main characters fights other people and other creatures and you can improve your skills. Combat is odd and uninteresting to be honest and I'm not sure it fits the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →very nice indie. love the artstyle and the combination of gamemechanics, with that explicit layer of style and setting is a real gem.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have bought this early since it came out on Steam to support my favorite modder for his amazing SFO mod for TW Warhammer 3 so I felt like I just had to give something back. I tried the game then and played for just a little and thought it was okay. I will make a proper review overall once its fully released cause right now im not too interested in it but I do look forward to it once its done :) Love you Venris! Had to give something back for your amazing mod that you provide to us for…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Only one playable character, which limits gameplay variety right out of the gate. The game doesn’t support widescreen properly—UI is stretched or misaligned—and there are issues with missing or untranslated text. Also, people comparing this to Darkest Dungeon clearly haven’t played it. This lacks the depth, polish, and tension that made DD memorable. Feels unfinished and not worth the asking price in its current state.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very fun! I like the variety of choices available to me as I play the game, and the gameplay loop is fun. The only issue I've noticed so far is that some events will be lacking translation into English, leaving me confused as to what happened. I've only noticed this with two events so far however, those being the smuggler's rest and collapsing the cave on the rats in the dungeon. I love the art style and am excited to see where the game goes next!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great art style. Fantastic voice acting (though you really have to try all three options to appreciate the subtle changes in some dialogue). And the music just adds to the folk horror elements.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I understand that this is early access, but still, the overall game experience is one of frustration and confusion. There is a tutorial, but it doesn't cover everything you need to know as a new player. I'm not talking about revealing surprises the game might have in store for you later on, but rather instructing on basic functions to let the new player get a level footing to start enjoying the game. The interface within the sanctum is not intuitive, and the constant lack of meaningful…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Venris is the head of SFO Team and trust me when I say he does invest his time on something he loves. Indeed the game hicks up here and there, but its Early Access for a reason. Amazing story, voice actors and sound. I really think it's going to thrive as time passes.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Listen, I'm only giving this a thumbs up because I believe in this game, because it has great potential. But in the state it is now, it's more of a glorified demo than an early access game. I understand that the developers want to garner interest in their game and it is justified, but the campaigns is just too damn short. You just understood the game, you licked blood, you want to sink your teeth into it and play as much as you can. But that's the point where the campaign ends. Very, very sad.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'd rather not end up eyeless too (Here's my UPDATED review after 24 hours.) Okay, I’ve given it another chance 24 hours later, and I’ll admit—my eyes were probably more tired than usual in my first review. That said, the core of my feedback still stands: certain parts of the descriptive texts, tooltips, etc., would benefit from a larger font size or scaling options. However, having now played for a longer while, I can confidently say this game plays great so far. It’s intriguing, immersive,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →been this this on steam deck. terrible lag. tutorial prompts misaligned. can't enjoy this until lag is fix. i will check again in a week.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So I will start off with the transparency that I initially bought Whispers of the Eyeless to support Venris and co for their work on the Total War: Warhammer mod SFO. Now about the game itself, the art is gorgeous and the VA for the prohpet? Top notch, definitely very fitting choice and encapsulates the charisma and rage/desire/mania of the prohpet. The Cult Management is both straight forward and simple, yet not without its flaws such as how you raise faith, lower needs and lower notierity.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Now that the Game is in 1.1 I have decided to perform a full playthrough. so far it has really hooked me will update once I have completed the game. The new tutorial was quite fun. and I look forward to see how I affect the city. The nature of a single save means I will want to later potentially choose different choice of quest to gain different follower.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Love the vibe of this game. The artwork is amazing, and you get a great sense of building up this cult. Basically boils down to a resource management + RPG turn-based combat. Would love to see a team-up with the Shadows of Forbidden Gods dev.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tested it early on and... game become way better. Balance in particular. There are some things that can be made better, but mostly in ui departament. Quite fun overall.
