We Were Soldiers
The year is 1965 and America is at war with North Vietnam. Commanding the air cavalry is Lt. Col. Hal Moore (Gibson), a born leader committed to his troops. His target: the Ia Drang Valley, called "The Valley of Death." As Moore prepares for one of the most violent battles in U.S. history, he delivers a stirring promise to his soldiers and their families: "I will leave no man behind...dead or alive. We will all… From TMDB

unlabelledView post →Yeah it's hard to argue that Moore wasn't a good pick to have the name attached to him. Besides what you said, he served at the base, is buried there, fought in Korea and Vietnam, fought in the Battle of la Drang, and co-authored We Were Soldiers Once... And Young which was adapted into a film.
unlabelledView post →He’s literally the shitty lieutenant from the movie version of “We Were Soldiers Once…”
unlabelledView post →Crandall’s story - in part - is included in the movie “We Were Soldiers Once, and Young” - which was in turn based on Gen. Hal Moore’s book of the same name. Crandall flew 16 hours that day, landing when assigned medevac flights refused due to heavy fire. He flew over 900 combat missions in Vietnam
unlabelledView post →The utter disrespect to LTG Hal Moore and his wife Julia (was a jointly named base) here. Julia is the whole reason deceased servicemembers' families get two-person notification teams instead of a letter. Mel Gibson played LTG Moore in the movie We Were Soldiers about Moore's time in Vietnam.
unlabelledView post →Da Nang is referring to the first battle in Viet Nam of which Donnie would never see because he had his father pay off a doctor to lie and say that young Donnie had bone spurs. Who should go to jail here.✅ They made a movie about that battle "We Were Soldiers" of which Donnie was not!

unlabelledView post →We Were Soldiers is such a good fucking movie honestly.
unlabelledView post →"We Were Soldiers" is an example of a basically pro-Vietnam war movie that is better made despite ending the battle on a pure Hollywood fantasy.
unlabelledView post →Agree. I grew up on Lethal Weapons and so many of his other movies I really admired, like his movie take on We Were Soldiers Once, and Young. But now? I won’t go back and watch any of it, sadly, and definitely not anything new. Cut him off since “Passion of Christ.”
unlabelledView post →I’ll give him We Were Soldiers and maybe Fatman, but not much else on his resume. Definitely not the Christ snuff film which has me side eying Jim Caviezel too, but I’ll give him Person of Interest. Same outcome though (spoiler).
unlabelledView post →I am just re-watching "We Were Soldiers" tonight, and even 10 minutes into the film, I found tears in my eyes because it is nourishing to see "duty, honor, country" and real leadership. It leaves my soul wanting. Salute to my fellow veterans. Take care of each other. www.imdb.com/title/tt0277...
unlabelledView post →My husband and my dad are both veterans. They named the films closest to what they experienced. For my dad, it was When We Were Soldiers; in my husband’s case, Restrepo (he was providing air support). Ask the veteran in your life what film they relate to, you may learn something about their service.

unlabelledView post →The scene at the end of We Were Soldiers with the Vietnamese commander is the best scene in that entire movie. An American soldier has left a small paper US flag (the kind you'd get at a fairground) and the NVA commander talks about how the US will see this fight as a victory.
unlabelledView post →I feel like WW invites this sort of reading v easy. Not that it's wrong, but any attempt at spinning an antiwar movie out of WW2 has the perverse effect of being pro-war or pro-fascist. But then maybe I'm wrong because We Were Soldiers exists and both sides 'Nam so hard it turns it into Dudes Rock
unlabelledView post →You may know the name Hal Moore from the book "We Were Soldiers Once...and Young," and the movie starring Mel Gibson.
unlabelledView post →Man. This is beautiful. You made me cry, in the same way “We Were Soldiers” (book and film) dies so. Then you made me ANGRY, but in the BEST way. I love all of this. Thank you.
unlabelledView post →Honestly, We Were Soldiers is definitely my favorite Vietnam War movie and one of my favorite war movies in general, in large part because of this. Especially crazy given the other historical works Mel Gibson has worked on.
unlabelledView post →I’m surprised he hasn’t yet poached the prayer from Mel Gibson’s character in the film ‘We Were Soldiers’: “Oh, yes, and one more thing, dear Lord, about our enemies, ignore their heathen prayers and help us blow those little bastards straight to Hell. Amen.”
unlabelledView post →I haven’t watched a Mel Gibson movie since “Once We Were Soldiers”. And I met him and socialized with him a tiny bit years ago, before we knew he was a Nazi. Back then he wasn’t allowed to drive due to DUIs. Which should’ve been a clue.
unlabelledView post →We Were Soldiers is considered like a top 5 war movie for dudes over 40 so good luck with that.
unlabelledView post →Yes! I have so many to choose from.. (Excalibur, Highlander, all of the LOTR, We Were Soldiers Once, ) This is My favorite film with a Scotsman playing an Egyptian, and a Frenchman playing a Scotsman!
unlabelledView post →I really hate to give it to Mel Gibson but he and Madeline Stowe did a good job in “We Were Soldiers”. They at least tried to tell that story. I have to assumed that was Julia Moore’s influence on the film.
unlabelledView post →You can read the book by Hal Moore, We Were Soldiers and Young, or the movie with Mel Gibson
unlabelledView post →In November 1965 the first major confrontation in Vietnam happened. It was called the Battle of Ia Drang, which inspired the film "We Were Soldiers" in 2002. It was very accurate. Nobody won and many died for nothing.
unlabelledView post →It is. His film WE WERE SOLDIERS I think is a very good film about America’s early days in Vietnam. But as I watch it I always think about his various issues.
unlabelledView post →We Were Soldiers is a strange film. Some of the most gruesome battle scenes ever jutxtaposed with corny scenes out of a hallmark movie. War is hell but Americans emerge as good Christian family men.

unlabelledView post →yknow like. i watch We Were Soldiers (2008) and i walk away and go “man that movie really handled its subject matter with zero sensitivity what a shit movie.” if i play an equivalently bad game of Patrol, now i’ve handled the subject matter with zero sensitivity and am a dickhead
unlabelledView post →We Were Soldiers (2002) This one isn't even subtle this is just a fascist propaganda flick about how great the Vietnam war was and how were actually could've/should've won. Replace Vietnam with any mid east nation and you get the frothing hunger for death the US was in the throws of.
unlabelledView post →Imagine a movie shot in Black Hawk Down/We Were Soldiers style of the Big Burn of 1910. Pulaski’s entire story. Fleeing from Avery on a train trapped between flame fronts on a train. The visual shot of a plume collapse. It’d be incredible.

unlabelledView post →VERY unpopular opinion (because he's scum) but We Were Soldiers is one of the best war movies ever made (aside from The Green Berets' level jingoism) in terms of the visceral combat scenes - of which there are many. It's brutal, and it works. Cinematography alone is A+. Gibson does/did know film.

unlabelledView post →The Pentagon drunk announced that Fort Moore, named for American hero Lt. Gen. Hal Moore & his wife Julia, will revert back to Fort Benning in honor of American traitor Henry L. Benning, a Confederate general. The decision sparked outrage. The movie "We Were Soldiers," is part of his story.
unlabelledView post →Exactly. Most people know Hal Moore through Mel Gibson’s portrayal in the movie, We Were Soldiers.
unlabelledView post →I think it’s a good time to remember that the only time Mel Gibson ever cared about historical accuracy in a movie was “We Were Soldiers”: a movie that conviniately only focused on the very early period of US Troops fighting in Vietnam where they didn’t realize they were fighting an unwinable war

unlabelledView post →Just watched We Were Soldiers. Great movie but it's a shame that so many scenes were filmed and deleted that were in the book. The M60 gunner who gets his half his brains blown out yet survives. The huge black soldier carrying a dead white soldier out from a Huey. Moore's return to base.
