Voice of Cards: The Beasts of Burden
Developer Square Enix
Voice of Cards: The Beasts of Burden is a 2022 role-playing video game developed by Alim and published by Square Enix for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and Windows. It was released for Android and iOS in 2023. It is the third game in the Voice of Cards series, which uses the aesthetic of a tabletop role-playing game for its story and gameplay. The player controls a woman out for revenge against the monsters that… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

I really think the card gimmick for this game was to save on art budget; It's a standard JRPG in gameplay and aside from all characters, monsters and items being cards, it's just menu based combat with a light "mana" system. It's like Octopath Traveller with OG FFVII's materia system of skills. Loosely. I really hope this review helps people as I would be sorely disappointed if I bought this…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hi new folks! I'm a translator, editor, and game dev! I worked on stuff like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Fire Emblem Three Hopes, Voice of Cards, Dragalia Lost, plus neat stuff like FFXIV TTRPG + Chocobo and the Airship. Now I'm at TPCi! Also, I don't discuss localization on here!

Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars Finally got around to playing the Yoko Taro-directed card game-looking RPG that we've all diligently allowed to gather dust on our collective wishlists! unlabelledView post →I've become a huge fan of this series as a kind of under-appreciated hidden gem. First thing to say, it looks like a card game/TTRPG but could be redone as a pixel RPG with almost identical game mechanics. Think of the cards medium as more there to facilitate the style of storytelling-- this is basically Yoko Taro and Alim creating their own RPG Maker engine. If you're into the Drakenierlore iceberg kind of stuff, the series is a must play. (Spoiler from first couple hours) One character…

unlabelledView post →I hadn't heard of this series, so this was my first experience with the franchise. I finished the game (once) and walked away vaguely unsatisfied with the whole deal. For the good, the weird mashup of card battler and Dungeons and Dragons makes for some really neat aesthetics. As you explore fields and dungeons, cards are flipped over as you walk across them, square by square. The card art is fantastic, and I sort of loved the story's presentation of being told via cards through a "Dungeon…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Voice of Cards trilogy is super underrated!! Give them a shot when you need a little charming game that gives kind-of-sort-of DnD vibes!! 🥰 ((still need to play the third game but I LOVED the first two!!))
unlabelledView post →Love this version of Voice of Cards and it's an easy recommendation to those interested in this series. Each version of VoC has a gimmick that sets it apart from each other and this game has a monster catching mechanic to it. It honestly adds a fun and new layer to building a team that the other versions did not have. The narration and world building through story telling continues to prove effective and enjoyable at a casual level with characters to love and hate. My biggest gripe so far…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →35. Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars Neat game, super easy until the literal final boss where it kinda locks the fuck in? Not complaining, game was a good time, very heartfelt. You can definitely feel the Yoko Taro-isms, but also it's kind of heartwarming, despite the subject matter?
unlabelledView post →I swear this series constantly teeters in the middle: easily wavered into the recommended or not recommended. Unfortunately this one just falls short of impressing me, yet again. good Great card art. Ok-ish music. Fantastic narrator. bad No unique skills. All skills now come from monsters you capture. I was vastly interested that the main character was a beastmaster until I saw... the whole party was. Capture/find rate for monsters is abysmal: 30% chance to find the…

unlabelledView post →Honestly, I totally respect it. Voice of Cards hits an itch I have had for a while for TTRPG style video games. Like god what I would give for another game like Crimson Shroud.
unlabelledView post →The main reason I bought this game was Yoko Taro, the creative director. He is, like Hideo Hoshima, a developer who likes trying new stuff, loves writing stories without clear defined good and bad guys; also in Voice of Cards your party is doing good stuff as well as bad stuff. Yoko Taro is famous for his Drakengard and Nier series. So why a thumbs down? Because the whole game design is pretty mediocre at best. If you know Yoko Taros writing style, figuring out the plottwist was way to easy…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly speaking, It's an okay game. If you're expecting anything similar to "VoC: The Isle Dragon Roars" prepare to be disappointed. The plot was okay, the characters were cute looking but also okay, the combat has a lot of stuff added in that made it worse in my opinion. I don't regret the 13 hours I spent playing and finishing the game, but I would discourage anyone who would consider getting it.

unlabelledView post →A series that I personally wish got more play was the Voice of Cards series from Square Enix, a series that had a lot of Drakengard veterans including Yoko Taro and Keiichi Okabe. unlabelledView post →There's still a vast amount of clicking to go through the dialogue and the game over explains everything. Poor design While this game lets you equip all your party member it badly botched the skill system. After each battle there's a chance you'll get on the enemy's skills. This might sound good but the problem is you have to select from 3 chests, which can contain skills or items. If you get an item you don't get a skill. This quickly makes combat dull as you have to keep using the same…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really enjoyed the previous two Voice of Cards games, but The Beast of Burden has proven to be infuriating due to its design. Initially, the changes to skills seemed exciting - blue magic in a Voice of Cards game! - but the randomness involved in acquiring skill cards is incredibly frustrating. To obtain a specific skill card, you must first encounter the right enemy, and some of these, like Dryads, are notably rare (Dryads hold the only early multi-attack skill cards available). Then,…

unlabelledView post →I am a fan of this series and am having a blast. If you're a fan, pick it up; if you're undecided, wait till it's 20-30% off. The story in this entry is fun and charming so far. The art is stellar, as always. I wish there was more new art and monster/NPCs. The environments feel slightly better than Dragon Isle. The random encounters are far less annoying than Dragon Isle, but I'm also taking my time; I advise that you take breaks when playing any of the games. They've added passive skills from…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars is an RPG with a card theme to it! The world is entirely made of cards and the story is told through a narrator that tells it to you as if you were playing a table top game. Its unique as hell AND I will be reviewing it later today on my site!

unlabelledView post →I've never looked much into some of Yoko Taro's non-DrakeNieR titles but I may just have to try out Voice of Cards for the soundtrack alone. I'm hoping it's a good game as well whenever I do try it. I know that and SiNOAlice do some minor tie-ins to DrakeNieR but I'm not sure how much.
unlabelledView post →Ender Magnolia is a blast. Lilac reminds me of a character you’d find in the Voice of Cards video game series Yoko Taro did.
unlabelledView post →The Beasts of Burden is the third chapter in the recently released JRPG series Voice of Cards created by Yoko Taro (Drakengard, NieR) in which everything is represented by cards. If you haven’t played the previous ones, The Isle Dragon Roars and The Forsaken Maiden, then don’t worry ‘cause each title has a different setting and narrative, despite sharing the same structure. The game follows the story of the Guard, an unnamed girl (we can choose her name later on) living in an underground…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Considering the horrible experience I had with the second game I am really glad to give a positive review to this one. The characters are interesting and the story of a long voyage over a desolate and (who could have guessed?) hopeless wasteland is extremely rewarding. As the second game there is no challenge at all, I've never used an item or a revive, you just steamroll over everything but at this point I consider those games a non-static VN. I don't have a problem with that, and I still…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It is depressing how Yoko Taro made a game that was critically acclaimed and sold insanely well but hasn't done anything of note beyond a remaster and Voice of Cards.
unlabelledView post →At 9PM, I will randomly draw an applicable Square Enix game that released between January 1st 2022, and December 31st 2022, that weren't ports of existing releases (remasters do count, and will be played). There will be 3 exceptions: 1. Babylon's Fall 2. Various Daylife 3. Voice of Cards
unlabelledView post →Omg I love it she looks like she’d fit into a Nier/Drakengard game or Voice of Cards! Super cool!
unlabelledView post →Last one I'm posting for now, this is Al'e or "Guard" from Voice of Cards: The Beast of Burden. That Yoko Taro card game that apparently ties to the DrakeNier universe at some point? Either way I've seen ZERO fanart of anything past the first game which sucks! I like the designs especially Al'e

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →#36 Voice of Cards: The Forsaken Maiden Just like the first Voice of Cards game; you play through it, finish up some lose ends and are done with it. Also the game director is Yoko Taro. Take that as you will.
unlabelledView post →GO PLAY THE VOICE OF CARDS GAMES!!!! They're not-D&D games that revolve around dice and use cards as an aesthetic, but each game is completely separate and made by Yoko Taro. They're all really good stories and I would strongly recommend getting them when they're on sale!
unlabelledView post →that being said; PLAY VOICE OF CARDS YOKO TARO IS ONE OF THE TWO GAME DIRECTORS !!!!!!!!
unlabelledView post →Well it was a big step up from the second game, but not as good as the first one. It wasn't all bad but not quite good enough to recommend it, I think. The long in short: just play the first game and if you like the first one, maybe pick this one up on a sale. I found the story kind of slow and it's predictable and not very creative to begin with. Also: the game loves to imply to you that your making a choice here and there but you don't. It's mostly the same result either way. and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I saw a comment in another review highlighting that this game isn't about building your deck, and I want to emphasize that too. The world of this game appears card-themed, giving it a unique style, but in reality, it's a jRPG with an engaging story and a fairly easy difficulty level, which I absolutely loved! Surprisingly, moving a token around to flip cards and unveil the world was incredibly captivating. The narrator's voice is soft and soothing, a real treat for the ears. This is the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I only tentatively give this a recommendation. Gameplay is fine and the new monster skill mechanic works fairly well, even if the way to obtain them could have been worked out better. The story feels like a much more personal one than a grand one like in the other voice of card games and it cuts off right as the story seems to really pick up speed. It feels like the first episode of a bigger story than a complete one on it's own. The cast is varied, but due to the skill system they don't…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Gameplay isn't as challenging as the last iteration, but if you're into voice of Cards for the story or the oldschool tabletop vibe then Beasts of Burden the best one yet. While Forsaken Maiden switched things up with rotating party members, Beasts lets you customize the movesets for each party member playing on their strengths and weaknesses. The mechanic of capturing beasts, while nothing like a creature collector, almost has a Pokemon-esque vibe to it, at least from a philosophical…
