unlabelledView post →This is one of those games that makes you wish steam had a "Maybe" option. The game is obviously well crafted with nice graphics. My main gripes is that none of it's game elements really feel interesting or fun. Combat is easy, bordering on trivial. Puzzle are as simple as can get and requires only minimal effort. There are lots of secret chests, but none are really hidden and potentially the worst part is that they almost universally doesn't contain anything exciting, you'll mainly get coins…

unlabelledView post →I usually bounce off these "clone" games. This one is clearly taking a lot of its inspiration from Link's Awakening, but its so well made I couldn't put it down until I finished it. Most of these games that call back to the Zelda games of yore get the combat all wrong. It tends to be way too complex and introduce all of the "souls" elements everyone is doing these days. Not this game, it is clearly designed to be exploration first. If you've bounced off of Zelda clones in the past give this…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Under the Island is, in my opinion, a very good Zelda-like indie game despite its flaws and any frustrations I had. The devs at Slime King Games put a lot of love into crafting this indie over the years. If you're a fan of Zelda games, I recommend this for a challenge! This is my review for...

My frustrations started to appear after the halfway point, but it's still a fun game

unlabelledView post →Target Audience: Action Adventure Games Who Love Exploration and a Link to the Past Summary: When it's obvious from the get go that a game like Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past has a strong influence on a game's development, some games can fall into the trap of feeling too similar and being a carbon copy of the game without its budget. Under The Island however goes for it's own mood and feeling, taking elements like the sword swipes and some key animation parallels in their game, but…

unlabelledView post →Disappointed with this title. Obviously a throwback game, but made either without love or without understanding of what is needed to make a tribute game effective. Movement and item use should feel good and it doesn't. Many times you'll smack an enemy and they'll hit you back because the knockback/hitstun isn't lock enough. You'll dash through an enemy and get hit anyways. You'll bonk on the edge of a door. The other items take ages to use (bombs, flowers) and are cumbersome to use at speed.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game reminds me so much of Minish Cap in every way I could hope for. The pixel art style is vibrant and upbeat, the world is detailed, the characters are active, the exploration is enthralling As of writing this I've completed the second dungeon and I already know this is a game I'm going to find worth revisiting time and time again, it really meets what I want out of this genre. Progression is incredibly satisfying and I've really missed games like this where you can collect upgrades for…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Edit: I have 100% completed it and tl;dr yeah, the games main problem is that its just cromulent. I don't think its a bad game by any means, and I can respect the developers put a lot of work into it, but its just not for me. Absolutely give it a shot if you're curious or on the fence, maybe it will be your next favorite game. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have mixed feelings on this. I think it warrants trying…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What a gem of a game. So much detail, so much fun, so much to discover without it feeling tedious or forced. I had a bit of a slow start into the game, when you have almost no items and abilities yet but as soon as you’ve got your first one it’s a steep curve of progression and rewards so definitely stick with the game more than 2 hours, it will be worth it! Currently only taking a break from playing because my Steam Deck needs to recharge lol

unlabelledView post →Good little 2D Zelda-like from a small team. It made me nostalgic for a number of SNES/Game Boy titles, while maintaining a relatively unique identity as far as story, art and music go. Devs have worked pretty hard on patching game and taking player feedback into consideration. Note the following: It's relatively short (10-12 hours), not difficult, and the minigames are almost all optional. For example: if you can't hit the max score on the arcade game, don't worry. There are plenty of extra…

unlabelledView post →So I got to the final boss in Under the Island and it is INSANE. It’s just way too hard for me so unfortunately, I will be dropping the game as there is no way I can do it. I’m really bummed as the game is actually quite good and I enjoyed it up until that point! A real shame!
unlabelledView post →Almost eight years did Under the Island cook in the minds of Johannes and Simone Grünewald. Now, the game is one of the best retro exploration adventures has been out for two weeks. We talked to @slimekinggames.bsky.social about the design, the release and their next plans.
unlabelledView post →I can't pet my dog. Worst game ever ... (Okay naw, Under the Island is still amazing)
unlabelledView post →Okay, Under The Island is a decent game. It's a little easy to get lost and end up places you aren't needing to be in that will likely kill you but it's cute and fun. Worth the money I spent on it. I'm not done yet but for $25 I have gotten a decent amount of fun out of it so far.

unlabelledView post →A MUST PLAY FOR ZELDA-LIKE FANS!! For real, I haven't played such a vibrant, charming game of this style since Minish Cap; if not Blossom Tales. I still just a couple hours in and haven't finished yet, but I'm darn certain I wont be regretting this purchase! Great work, very great work there! I wish you the best with your launch
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Beautiful, fun and charming little gem of a game with a LOT of personality. If you're an exploration gamer like me who loves detailed, immersive worlds full of secrets and diverse puzzles, then Under the Island totally got you covered. I'm loving every second of it!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a wonderful action adventure! The world design, the puzzles, the music, the art, it all combines to make a perfect nostalgic vibe. As I went through the story, I kept getting sidetracked with talking to people and exploring the world before continuing on. The island is such a compelling place to just exist within and wander through. Even after beating the game, the island is a joy to explore - it is so fun collecting everything and finishing optional areas.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really had a lot of fun with the Under the Island demo by @slimekinggames.bsky.social. If you haven't played it yet, give it a shot, and if you can, please wishlist the game!
