A not so classic game, to be honest, as it was never as famous as Sim City 3 or Caesar III, from which this game is heavily inspired. This game is in fact a mix of these games, plus Majesty and other great simulation strategy games from the 90s and early 2000s. If you are looking for military strategy, and warfare there is none here. This game is set in the 1950s during the Cold War, more…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game keeps crashing. Unable to play.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →**A Review of *Tropico*** *By Richard M. Nixon** Let me be perfectly clear: I did not lose the election of 1960. But that's not why we're here. We're here because this game—*Tropico*—lets you run a country. A small country, yes. A banana republic, if you will. But you run it. You make the decisions. You stand before the people and you tell them what's good for them, and by God, you deliver. And let me tell you something about running a country: it's not easy. The factions—the intellectuals,…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →UPDATE: Something changed, something was patched. It works in windowed mode now. But it only has like 4 resolutions to choose from. Tropico 2 still doesnt. Used to be one of my favorite games and the game itself still holds up. But it simply can't be played anymore. You might be able to start it on 16-Bit graphics on an XP VM but I haven't been able to get it to start on Win10 and put it in windowed mode so I can literally see anything but pixels. Maybe Kalypso could just stop making the same…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is one of my favorite games of all time. At time of review, 50 hours on steam. Realistically, since I was a teenager, its in the many hundreds. Game mechanics are simple. This is one of the first games I've played where each individual person on the map had needs, basic personality traits, skills, etc. Contrast that with other contemporary city builders, like SimCity, where the people didnt really exist. My favorite parts about the game are the aesthetics, personality/charm, music and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have played all the successors and Tropico 6 is great, but I always return to the original for the nostalgia and there is still one scenario I have never managed to complete, even with cheats. I just lose sense of time and immerse myself into my tropical dictatorship.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wish they updated the graphics, too. It doesn't need much, just some 4k textures. The gameplay is still fun.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun Game. Simple mechanics. Politically incorrect. Can play hundreds of hours. I've been playing 20 years now this game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's the most difficult in the franchise. The democratic path, winning elections, mainly. The mood of the people is very volatile. But let's get to the main feature of this game: "Café, Café, Café Dame mas Café Café, Café, Café Yo quiero Café Si te digo cositas (con Café) Si te doy un abrazo (con Café) Si te doy un besito (con Café) Si te llevo a la calle (con Café) Café, Café, Café Dame mas Café Café, Café, Café Yo quiero Café "
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is the best city-builder that's been made since 2001. Every character has needs and deep motivations, including political parties they support and opinions about the state of things. Then there's inflation which affect the whole economy. Resources need to be manually hauled so the planning of the city is vital to keep things going. Yes it has graphically aged and it's the only downside I can think of. Mechanically it beats all the Cities: Skylines', Sim Cities', later Tropico entries and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tropico 2 Pirates: Abandon everything you learned in Tropico 1 as totally irrelevant. Remember that on their lowest price setting, Tier 1 pirate entertainment buildings charge no fees. This is to keep your poor pirates happy. As soon as all of your pirates are making money, raise the prices. Keep your pirate housing/entertainment neighborhood separate from your captive industry area. Don't be afraid to use the Black Market to equip your ships, or even to get a negative balance doing this.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a classic. Definitely my favourite from the series.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have reloaded and pirates cove doesnt work from my library but seems to work from the store button, only reason I dont recommend it, as it wont work after awhile, like most of the games. update: pirates cove doesnt work at all. freezes.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tropico: Pirate adventures that warm the soul with nostalgia A long time ago, when pixels seemed bigger and games more difficult, I discovered Tropico for the first time. First it was the first part, and then it was a pirated addition to the second. And now, years later, I fondly recall those carefree days spent building my banana republic and fighting world imperialism. Tropico is not just an economic strategy, it's a dictator simulator in which you try on the role of El Presidente, ruler…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tropico Reloaded is a thoughtful compilation that brings together the original Tropico and its expansion, Paradise Island, offering players a deep dive into the early roots of the Tropico series. Developed by PopTop Software, BreakAway Games, and Frog City Software, and published by Kalypso Media Digital, this 2009 release captures the essence of a politically charged city-building simulation set in a vibrant Caribbean island during the Cold War era. By combining economic management, political…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Amazing game for its time but has not aged well at all :( it does have a lot of charm when it comes to the music. The second Tropico doesn't even work!

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played this way before it was on Steam. I remember seeing this game at the store (The Tropico and Stronghold collection). Great classic city-builder.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I got it at a great price then, and I've had great fun! I don't even mind that they added Tropico 3 after I bought it. 2 dollars for Tropico 3 is a steal! A bargain at twice the price. Looking forward to hearing from Sunny again. As for Tropico 1 and 2. Haven't actually played much of 2, but 1 is great. So many viable ways to play. Personally I always found cutting out religion to be the best way to run the country. If they wanted to worship they should have made those churches smaller and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Best in the series, and one of the best city builders ever.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A great start to the series! I had only played Tropico 4 and 5 before playing this, but I was impressed at how much was in the first entry. The only complaints I have is that clouds block large chunks of your view even when you aren't zoomed out that much, there are sometimes delays when rotating the camera, your population and overall happiness aren't on the main screen like they are in future games which was always nice to be able to see at a glance whenever you wanted, it's hard to see where…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Personally I never really got too much into other Tropicos, but I absolutely love this one. I played for the first time the demo version when I was just a kid, and it really hit me. The playability, the music... The MUSIC!!! It's do damn good... I still listen to it today during work/commute, and it brings that nostalgic feeling... It's really a great strategy game that you can kind of play at your own pace, something that I enjoy a lot. And doing that while listening to a gorgeous…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Too dated to be enjoyable and with crashes.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Summary A ridiculously fun city builder 2 in 1 of the original Tropico franchise that started it all. Pros + Different + Very fun + Great music Cons - Dated Overview Tropico Reloaded is a ridiculously fun old school city builder that's 2 games in 1 and the first of the long Tropico franchise. The first game is the original Tropico along with it's expansion that focuses more on the tourism aspects, the second game is Tropico 2 which takes a pirate theme instead of the original banana…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The start of the series and he bet in my opinion.. the newer ones have better upgraded systems but seem to lack something from the original. If you're stuck what Tropico to buy then either this one or Tropico 4.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tropico Reloaded is not the best Tropico game in the series but it is definitely a classic and worth playing in similar comparison to the older Age of Empires games. Not exactly in terms of gameplay but just older classics that everyone should enjoy. The game itself really has you focusing on a myriad of topics ranging from housing, farming, and logging to population control, tourism, and factions which I find astounding for such an older game. My only knock on the game playing it in 2022 is…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have thousands of hours in this game on Windows 98. Game is so good
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Loved this game when I was in high school and man, it holds up! There's something about the music, the graphics, and the gameplay that retains all of its charm. If you're looking for an island-building sim that doesn't have the expansive feeling of Sim City or Skylines, which to me can be a bit impersonal and overwhelming, then Tropico is for you!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So much soul. The best Tropico game in my earnest opinion
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is game from my childhood. I went back to this game after 6 (?) years absence and I still love it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A classic. I remember playing this when it first came out and it's still just as entertaining today.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →crud wont load, with all the options to get old games working, seems the devs cant be bothered fixing a simple old game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Figured I'd try an "easy" scenario (I'm not used to strategy games, but I want to get into them), and the one I chose was where a plane crashes on a small tropical island and you're elected as the person who will lead them (The goal here being to eventually build a runway so you can escape the island). Yeeeeah, I ended up running the small island "nation" into the ground, constantly was going into debt, and by the time I was getting the hang of things a commie started running against me in an…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great retro game. Nuances for a given island vary by dictator. Lots of dictators. Too bad the list couldn't be updated to 2025.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Use to play this game as a kid in early 2000s all the time. Still love it!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dated, but still my favorite Tropico Game. Seems more like an actual political simulation rather than just a series of goofy jokes about dictatorships and absolute power.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game would load, but after setting the simulation up, the game resolution and graphics would freeze. Half of the screen wasnt visible, with no way to set video options.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Old game but good old El Presidente simulator. Enjoying the soundtracks also !!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love Tropico. The scenarios are engaging and quite difficult. It also runs really stable, I had no crash during all my time playing. Remarkable for such an old game! I wish the industry was balanced better. Most of the time it is not worth it building an industry, because tourism is so overpowered.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's 2023, I played this game to check out how much difference it is compared to the newer Tropico and also because I bought the whole series. I remembered the first time I tried to play Tropico was Tropico 3 and coming back to this 1st edition, its like what they say 'old but gold'
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Be warned: Steam is ending Windows 7 support with end of 2023. That means that they took my money last year without even supplying the service on this game for two full years. And that even though the game runs perfectly fine with windows 7 all the time. I can not support this cash grap and missleading hardware recommendations on the store page. THey argue that they have every right to rub you, because somewhere in the Eula they put in a sentence or two. Be cautious to buy any game now, if…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game doesn't work. Reported it in the forums and got a 1 month ban, and had the post removed. Never buying another "Kalypso" crap-ware game again.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i cant remember what real grass looks like
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've put hundreds of hours into this game in my life, I always come back to it. It holds up so well after all these years. Simple interface, exceptional music. A must have.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun game. Originally bought the first game (and later the expansion pack) at CompUSA back in the day after seeing the review on Extended Play on TechTV. Still just as fun on Steam, and the music is excellent too. Would recommend. Buy it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →May have nudged a few elections in my favour. But that's ok, It's not like I'm funneling away to a slush fund or anything....
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've played Tropico 4, 5, and 6 before I played this one, so this is mostly coming from the perspective of a modern Tropico player. And as you can see I've only played for a couple hours, so maybe take this with a grain of salt. What I like: + It's Tropico! Despite it's age, the core DNA of the series is very much here. If you love Tropico 4/5/6, you'll love Tropico 1 + Very addicting gameplay loop, for the same reasons I've said in my other Tropico reviews + Just has loads of charm, the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The city building and political management blend together really well. Watching your island grow while dealing with unexpected challenges never gets old. It's a classic strategy game that's still enjoyable today.
