The game is slower and has a lot more talking than Martha Is Dead (you move around a lot), which I did not like because you didn't know where to go most of the time, but it's still an amazing game that shows/tells you a little bit about the horrible things that were done to people in asylums in the past.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This isn't a game. It's a Walking Sim, and just a Walking Sim. There are no puzzles, no QTE's, no fast-clicking, and no jump-scares. This is to help you better focus on the story being told. You will have decisions to make throughout your experience, and parts of the game will change based on your decisions. The location is a psychiatric hospital in Italy. The time period is today, but with plenty of memories and flashbacks of the late 1930's to mid 1940's. You are Renee. (At least…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Town of Light is one of those games where the idea is much stronger than the game itself. The atmosphere of the psychiatric hospital is genuinely oppressive and unsettling at times, but almost everything else feels weak. The biggest problem is the gameplay. Most of the time you just slowly walk through identical corridors, read notes, and try to figure out where the game actually wants you to go. Instead of tension, you end up feeling bored. The game is short, but somehow still feels twice…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Story driven walking sim where you get to explore cool long abandoned insane asylum. Story itself is probably the saddest i've ever come across in any game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →-----------------------------------------❤️🧡💛💚💙💜---------------------------------------- Remove humanity and you open the door to a very real horror, the pain and suffering of people who deserved nothing other than love. Now doomed to a living hell https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3692910407 For some horror is being chased by a superhuman axe wielding serial killer, for others a hoard of undead, others the paranormal. This is none of those. It's one far closer to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game shows the sad reality of mental institutions taking place in the 40's when it was pretty bad. The story isn't bad its fairly good. My main issue with this game is the snails pace you progress at. It makes the game boring. If you could walk faster I think that would eliminate my concerns with this game. Its a similar feeling to people walking slowly infront of you with no way around them. If that doesn't bother you then I would recommend it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Engaging story. Between madness and reality you will have to explore a psychiatric hospital to understand what happened to the protagonist. Excellent soundrack and good storytelling. vote 8/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →"The Town of Light is a first-person psychological adventure. The story is set in Italy during the first half of the 20th century, in a real-life location that has been meticulously reconstructed. Explore and interact with the environment to relive Renée’s dark story, with each of your choices affecting different aspects of her narrative." ToL is arguably the closest thing to an ‘engaging interactive documentary’. The game presents itself as a sort of walking simulator verging on horror. Rest…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It was just... wow The Town of Light is a game about a person truly breaking down. It doesn't scare you with jump scares; it makes you feel incredibly uncomfortable. And I don't think it's a negative that there's no running in the game, because that's exactly what they want you to do – soak up the atmosphere. Playing as the main character and experiencing her memories of sexual abuse, trauma, vulnerability, and loneliness just forces you to process it all without any explanation or hope that…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really wanted to like this game. I love walking sims and the fragmented narratives that come together in an often disordered way. So when in an article I saw this game lumped with other games I enjoy, I thought that it might be perfect for me. It wasn't. The things that pushes a player forward in a successful walking sim are the questions "what happened to x?" or "how did we get to the present?". These games don't have the same fast-paced linnear narrative of a traditional story, but by…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Picked this one.....♥♥♥♥ CW: HEAVY themes. Okay in all seriousness I had no idea what I was getting into when I put this into one of my lists months ago, it's an educational game which I always appreciate, and on some level it's intended as a horror game, not in the conventional "survival horror" of key finding, puzzle solving, avoiding enemies sense, if the idea of a slow slowly narrated walking sim isn't for you well, I can't significantly challenge your opinion on the genre, it's not for…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a hard game to sit through and to recomend without significant trigger warnings. While it's not a unique idea or story, it's been told in movies before, playing it in first person is... disturbing to say the least. I think you know what you are in for when the story is about a young girl in a mental instituion in the late 30:s. The gameplay is your typical walking simulator and while it's a bit more free roaming you are still guided by a pretty good hint system telling you where to go…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Town of Light is a walking sim that tells the story of a girls experiences in a psychiatric ward. I was really torn about whether i should recommend it or not. I have decided not to and here is why. The story is gruesome, it shows and talks about very disturbing topics that actually used to happen not very far from the present. The game successfully delivers on getting its point across and tells a really decent story. Basically the story itself isn't the problem, it is the way it is told.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I want to applaud the sorrowful atmosphere of this game - keep in mind that you can end up feeling quite sad by the end of it. The developers seemed passionate about the theme they chose for their debut, and I always appreciate passion. It's a little bit clunky and not all that interesting from a gameplay standpoint, overall it's definitely not my favorite "walking sim". But if you like this subgenre, you might want to give The Town of Light a try.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A walking sim with technical problems. Mouse sensitivity is low by default, when I ramped it up, I still noticed that strafing felt bad because it moves you slower. The camera is blurry when you turn directions playing at higher sensitivity.. Not very PC gamer friendly. How is the walking sim outside of that? Dunno, the problems make it to miserable to endure.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →⭐⭐⭐ The Town of Light is a walking sim with some puzzle elements and an intriguing story, it also can be described as a psychological horror game: there are no monsters, demons or ghosts to haunt you, only your past. Maybe the darkest game that I've ever played.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It was interesting to play this after finishing Martha is Dead, which was the follow-up to this title made several years later. The evolutionary path from The Town of Light to Martha is Dead is very clear, and it is nice to see that this studio has such a strong hold over their artistic direction. They know what their strengths are, and they lean into them heavily. Unlike Martha is Dead, you can finish The Town of Light easily in a single sitting. It took me just over 3 hours, and that time…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →General gameplay loop is: 1.) Go to a certain place. 2.) Trigger a story advancement. 3.) Get a vaguely expressed direction indication where to go next. The first three or four times this loop took place, I was lost, watched a playthrough to see where to go. I then realized that I was lost, because the direction indication, which always triggered in the playthrough, never triggered for me. Up to the point where I stopped playing (about 33% through the game), it was an intense experience.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great. But disturbing at the same time.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So terribly sad and depressing. I respect it as a piece of history but gosh heck was this game sad.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is not so much a game as it is an experience. Frankly, it is a painful experience you don't want to go trough when you are not in the mood or to do it multiple times. This game has thick atmosphere and a "beautiful" story. What I mean by "beautiful" is that it does its intended job of raising awareness of a difficult subject and makes you feel sick, disturbed, frustrated, angry and/or sad. The story is about a woman who experienced something no human being should go through. Her character…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a powerful exploration of what was reality for countless thousands of people. This game hits especially hard for women. This game hits especially hard for anyone who's had to deal with the dark sides of mental health "care." I felt myself fairly immersed in the old ground of the hospital. The game does a good job with its art direction, captures the historic period (and the eventual decay) and does its job transporting the player mentally to another place and time. It has a handful of…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Town of Light warns in the beginning of disturbing scenes, and coming from someone who struggles with mental health, I recommend to take this warning into consideration. I'm very self-aware and had no issues throughout the game, but I know that isn't the case for everyone. There are ZERO jumpscares, yet I was on-edge during the whole game. There's an overwhelming sense of eeriness and as the story progresses, your discomfort will only feed into that. With that being said, I recommend…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Solid Meh/10. The grounds and atmosphere were beautiful. That's the nice thing I have to say. I found this game tedious and annoying. It relied too heavily on the distressing story being told but never really envelops the player. It gives you little to no direction in moments where you need it. It tried doing too much a too little at the same time. The voice actress was PAINFUL to listen to. Her over annunciation of every word sent the wrong kind of shivers up my spine. I understand why she…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →glad I only paid $4. I would not recommend the full price. Basically a walking sim with a decent story, but seems incomplete -- like there could have been a lot more the devs could have done to expand the story given the large plot of land and grounds that one can traverse. For the price of $20... definitely not worth it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →wow this game is heavy, subject matter way too dark for me but if you like dark effed up games this one is for you
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Went to Volterra Psychiatric Hospital, found some interesting things, made a friend, lost friend, recalled childhood memories, got a Lobotomy, then I played this game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →epic, excluding the aggressive flash bangs scattered throughout the game. i found myself bracing for impact, scrunching my face, and squinting my eyes every time i turned a corner in fear of the next memory flashback. (completely unrelated, but i am absolutely torn over the fact that the original music played during the last cut scene has been replaced. not that the new music is bad, not at all, but the impact the original had on me back in 2016 could never be replaced or forgotten)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I had a good time finished it in one sitting. Kept me interested. Brought back memories of Alice: Madness Returns with some of the drawn parts and story. A few times the game was missing vital dialog that I had to see in a old walk through to know what to do. It was a video from 8 years ago so possibly they patched it that way on purpose but it came off broken to me. It does a good job of letting you know where to go and what to do most the time so it was a immersion breaking. Overall a good…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very dark game... I mean they are fu@king doing lobotomy in game. It's definitely not for everyone.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First time I try to play this, game doesn't launch. Good thing it was only $3 because I can't return it (I don't always play games immediately upon purchase, as I'm sure many people don't). Luckily, there's a thread in the Discussion with a command prompt that makes the game launch. Disappointing, to say the least.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is more of an interactive movie than a game. You could watch a Let's Play and have a better experience as you won't spend a half hour looking for the trigger to advance to the next scene. I get that the game is trying to send the player a message, but I play video games for entertainment and not a lecture. This game comes off as a lecture.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is one of those games that really hits you emotionally because of how much melancholy it carries in its story. It’s based on real events and tells the tragic life of Renée, a 16-year-old girl who had the meaning of her life stripped away from her. It’s a deeply emotional and psychological game, and I highly recommend playing it. The weight of everything that happens in the asylum and inside Renée’s mind honestly gave me chills more than once. As for the achievements, you’ll unlock most…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A painful, moving and unforgettable psychological exploration. You are Renee, exploring an abandoned sanitarium in post-war Italy. You were committed when you were 16 and are now trying to recover your past. This is a very strong game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Town of Light - boring walking sim with some mature subjects and tragic story. When there are no puzzles to solve, no challenges to overcome, no tasks to do in your game, what's left have to be really well crafted to make the game worth playing. Town of light struggles with such a challenge. Your character walks very slow which makes exploring way longer and If you'll go too far in a wrong direction, getting back is really painful. Which is often the case, because you sometimes don't know what…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Another extremely uncomfortable game personally for me, and even more than McGee's Alices. Fears of the past of events than (most likely) never happened but *could* have happened and which I was afraid of. I guess slogan of (surprisingly fitting name) Lobotomy Corporation "Face The Fear, Build The Future" works the best here. Or I am just a masochist.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Having played "Martha is dead" first, I became more familiar with certain topics the developers of both games like to address, tragic events have transpired in Italy 's psychiatric clinics before and after WW2, and this is the story, based on true events, happening in one particular institution, to the main character, between 1939 and 1944 more or less. The game starts slowly, you can interact with many things without gaining too many insights in "what happened" to the MC back then. It is a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Excellent exploration game from the makers of Martha is Dead, about the torments of a young girl in a mental health institute during the 2nd world war. The story is based on true events and is extremely shocking, sometimes even sickening, but also very well translated into a game. I can definitely recommend this unforgettable experience.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This has got to be one of the heaviest, if not the absolute most devastating game I have ever played. The game vividly bequeaths you to a time and place void of hope, whence there is no return. If you truly immerse yourself in it, the story touches the deepest recesses of your consciousness. It took me the whole game to realize that you are actually playing as the wraith of someone who was once trapped within the asylum walls. This game is not for everyone, but it is an incredibly profound…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I made it to the final chapter and just couldn't stand the slow walking anymore.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game, with a solid theme that fits the game's atmosphere and level design very well. The abandoned asylum and the surrounding areas are amazing to explore with the added feel of horror.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Town of Light: Before I write this review I would like to emphasis that this game is not for everyone and some players may find the events depicted in this game disturbing. Be aware this game contains : Electroshock, Rape, Forced Abortion, Lobotomies, Restraints. This is not spoiler free, I tried to hide most of it. I think personally for educational purpose this game can be important to play to understand, how barbaric treatments were around that time. From 1888 until 1978 so 90 years…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very sad and miserable story about a young girl with serious mental issues and how people coped with it in the 1940´s when mental health care was still in their infancy while also dealing with a surge of tuberculosis. And it´s based on real events apparently. The devs did an impressive recreation of a the Volterra Psychiatric Hospital and its surroundings in Rome. You'll explore that building and its environment in various stages of decay. The story is mostly linear, apart from a few…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a game that has a greater focus on story rather than gameplay.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Too slow, depressing and not well directed. I could't force me through this. Story is good and heartbreaking, but as a game it fails miserably. You may better enjoy it by viewing a walkthrough video.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This first game is so much heavier than Martha is Dead regarding issues like mental health, abuse etc. The fact that the game takes plays in a real asylum in Italy makes it even more real and authentic. Just like Martha is Dead, the voice acting is stellar (Italian version) and makes you connect with the character. Gioco profondo e coraggioso.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very poignant; I would most assuredly love to play through this game for the first time again just to recapture the feeling it gave me by the end of it, definitely recommend giving it a try at least if it interests you even in the slightest. It's sad but oh is it good :)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just a bit janky for me. The story is an important one worth telling but it was frustrating battling the actual gameplay.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm kind of torn on this one. I think the subject matter is important for people to know about and understand how terribly the mentally ill were treated in the 1930s-40s. This game is just relentlessly depressing though. The things the main character goes through are just awful, from a tragic life before the asylum to "treatments" that just compound her issues while she's there. If you're sensitive to certain things like SA, I'd steer clear. From a gameplay perspective it's just very slow…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Town of Light tells a haunting and thought-provoking story set within the walls of a real psychiatric hospital, but its minimal gameplay and slow pacing may not appeal to all players.

unlabelledView post →Martha is Dead is a very beautiful looking game. LKA really took a lot of what they learned in The Town of Light and expanded on it with extremely immersive gameplay. A little too immersive for Sony I guess. Despite minor changes, the game is still such a unique experience. #MarthaIsDead #PS5
unlabelledView post →Ridiculously bad A poorly made Unity game with bad visuals, horrible controls, absent voice acting, and so on.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →very educating and emotional game. i just had to go back and unlock every other path in the game! the heavy unfortunate lore was even more saddening realizing it's inspired by real life events. makes me feel grateful about how medically advanced we are now and a lot more educated about mental illnesses and all that.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Long story short: it is not believable story. Sensitive documents laying around construction site - not believable. Controls are clunky. Story - lame. Audio recorded in few sessions - voice sound changes in the middle of the story telling. I would say to younger myself not to spend time on this game - it does not worth the time. Go play better game instead.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Definitely not something I was expecting, yet expecting at the same time. The Town of Light is definitely one of my favorite depressing video games of this year. So as mentioned by many others in the review section this isn't a jumpscare type of a game; but an experience of witnessing just how far Mental Health has come from the horrific and misguided treatments that took place in the early 20th century (and yes to this day Mental Health has a long ways to go yet!) Audio & and the voice…
