The Thin Red Line
The story of a group of men, an Army Rifle company called C-for-Charlie, who change, suffer, and ultimately make essential discoveries about themselves during the fierce World War II battle of Guadalcanal. It follows their journey, from the surprise of an unopposed landing, through the bloody and exhausting battles that follow, to the ultimate departure of those who survived. From TMDB

A sort of pulp-kitsch version of The Thin Red Line where Nicholas Cage is subject to soulful dissolves and you come away thinking humans are good.

So called, because it has been used countless times in trailers, TV ads, and anywhere a dramatic cue is needed. It is indeed a powerful piece ... 6/ #filmsky #moviesky

unlabelledView post →The Thin Red Line is probably the only like... good war movie to come out of the US that actually has a more philosophical point. Upon further views, Saving Private Ryan comes across as extremely jingoistic.
unlabelledView post →When I was younger, I didn't appreciate a lot of movies. The Thin Red Line, a WWII film set in the Pacific theatre, is one of those movies. When I was younger and dramatically less experienced, the film went way over my head. It wasn't "right", especially as a WWII movie. I get it now.

unlabelledView post →Oh, speaking of such things, THE THIN RED LINE directed by Terence Malick is a powerful film, based on the novel by James Jones but what Malick's film omits are the novel's several sex scenes between the soldiers. Seriously. Dudes fucking other dudes in the foxholes and pup tents.

I wasn't entirely sure what this film was trying to say, and from what I read about how this film was edited, I don't think Terrence Malick was sure either. Still, it was worth watching as it's really going to help me out the next time I play Framed.

unlabelledView post →Well, that was something. Half of it reminded me of Malick's The Thin Red Line, both visually and through voiceover and flashes to memory, and the other half is a relentless B-movie cacophony. 103 minutes of endless gunfire and war horror, but heightened by every choice Cornel Wilde makes.

unlabelledView post →The closest thing to a critical examination of the American soldier in WWII was the 1998 film adaptation of James Jones’s The Thin Red Line. A film which, for all its flaws, does a fine job representing the author’s depictions of his fellow GI’s on Guadalcanal.

The best for me are Koteas and Nick Nolte in their interactions together. Koteas’ “soft” compassion is essential to Malick’s pacifist vision.
