The Preacher's Wife
Good-natured Reverend Henry Biggs finds that his marriage to choir mistress Julia is flagging, due to his constant absence caring for the deprived neighborhood they live in. On top of all this, his church is coming under threat from property developer Joe Hamilton. In desperation, Biggs prays to God for help – which arrives in the form of an angel named Dudley. From TMDB

unlabelledView post →My #LastFourWatched for #LetterboxdFridaywas my getting into holiday movies. I enjoyed comparing "The Preacher's Wife" with the Cary Grant version. "Table 19" was a quirky movie with a great cast who go to a wedding reception & sit at the loser's table. All great choices. #FilmSky🎥 #movies🍿

unlabelledView post →Lovely film on iPlayer called 'The Preacher's Wife'. It stars the ultra-talented and beautiful Whitney Houston and Denzil Washington. A bit schmaltzy but worth a couple of hours of your valuable time. It's a remake of 1947 classic 'The Bishop's Wife' with David Niven & Carey Grant

I swear this sounds crazy but it's true: wildly underappreciated. The greatest singer to ever live and it's no contest.

Instead of that charmingly engaging story of a pre-occupied Bishop losing sight of what really mattered, we get this noisy and aggressive vehicle for Whitney Houston to prove she can shout her songs at us. She's married to the affable minister (Courtney B. Vance) whose church is facing an existential crisis. It's a lone beacon of hope in a…

unlabelledView post →Is is heresy to say I prefer Penny Marshall's "The Preacher's Wife" remake to "The Bishop's Wife"? I just find David Niven's character so cold, imperious and just plain mean that I find it hard to root for him. Marshall's film strikes a much better tone for the story, and the cast is sublime.

One of those is the 1928 novella the Bishop's Wife, which was adapted into film in 1947 under the same title. This was remade in 1996 as The Preacher's Wife. #publicdomaindaycountdown Soon, more adaptations can be made.
