unlabelledView post →All the New World vultures lack a syrinx (voice-box). So if you're watching a movie and hear the "cry" of a turkey vulture, it's fake. They *can* hiss & grunt. Turkey Vultures have an amazing olfactory system, centered around PERFORATED NOSTRILS that increase passive air flow. See the daylight?

He’s one of the great enthusiasts in film criticism, who will go to the wall for what moves him regardless of what others think. I don’t always agree but I always enjoy reading him.

unlabelledView post →Will lightly tweak this and say that movies were basically _opera_ instead of theater. Music accompaniment predates talkies, etc. IMHO, as the television grew, the relationship to film changed, so by the 60s/70s we are in The New World for movies.

unlabelledView post →Something I’m learning while researching for ‘Top 5 Directors’ is how important a single film can be if you have a smaller catalog. For example, Terrence Malick ascends to brilliant heights, and if he’s in consideration for the distinction of Top 5, “The New World” is the linchpin film. Is it good?

unlabelledView post →The New World (2005) Clearly influenced by my favorite film (Herzog's Aguirre). Loved the depiction of the colonizers' sheer ineptitude at surviving on the unknown continent when all of their western ideals of individualism break down in the face of nature. Did not care for the love stories. (3.5/5)
