The Name of the Rose
14th-century Franciscan monk William of Baskerville and his young novice arrive at a conference to find that several monks have been murdered under mysterious circumstances. To solve the crimes, William must rise up against the Church's authority and fight the shadowy conspiracy of monastery monks using only his intelligence; which is considerable. From TMDB

Umberto Eco's whodunnit gets a literate treatment here; it's all about censorship... Out Aug 10, 2026. 5 out of 5 film-authority.com/2026/07/31/t...

unlabelledView post →Every so often, I come upon a discussion about books & market appeal & why one book was a massive success &/or another one wasn't. In these moments, I remember The Name of the Rose was a massive international bestseller that got made into a movie. No one knows anything, and nothing makes sense.

unlabelledView post →Anybody got any good Tubi movie recommends? My recommend is The Name of the Rose. Sean Connery in a monastic noir, with Tom Waits as a hunchback and a young Christian Slater. Lighting, sets and atmosphere was incredible. A movie!
unlabelledView post →After finishing The Name of the Rose (I am halfway there! Slow but savory progress) I would like to watch the movie with Sean Connery. The trailer looks so classic and iconic, and I wonder if Connery can do justice to William.
unlabelledView post →A big movie week, because I'm going to see in theater Akira, Resident Evil, Les Tontons flingueurs (an old French comedy classic), and The Name of the Rose. 😍 Tickets are half price 🤗

The Castle was also a location in the film The Name of the Rose. Maybe slightly bending the criteria for #HillfortsWednesday ?
unlabelledView post →I'm still reading "The Name of the Rose". It's a big book chock-full of philosophy and religious conjecture, and quite distinct from the movie. But it's incredibly well written and absorbing, at least for me. But a quick read it is not.
unlabelledView post →*turns sadly from staring into my mug as your story wraps up* Alas, my friend, mine is a sadder tale. I once was a happily partnered man, but then I fell for the siren call of “recommending ‘The Name of the Rose’ for movie night”, and I have been to the wind ever since. Heed me!
unlabelledView post →There is one possible exception. The Name of the Rose is a *great* book, and I've not seen the film version but I'm told it's actually a very good film.
unlabelledView post →This is so much more than a murder mystery! It’s multilayered - religion, philosophy, psychology and much more. It’s an incredible work. Get a copy of ‘The Key to the Name of The Rose’ for reference as you read the book. The movie, which is very enjoyable, only really addresses the murder mystery.

I remembered the plot pretty well, which was good, because the film was a bit confusing by itself. Connery was wonderful in the lead, and the sets were just perfect, but the script was kind of hard to follow.
unlabelledView post →If Eco's novel The Name of the Rose is a glass of good red wine then the movie version of the book is a glass of grape juice. I mean, I don't hate it and it's not awful (maybe), but whenever I try to watch it I remember that I don't like grape juice.

The US loves to invade South American countries, this is nothing new, international law or not. Terrible film, even worse than Firefox.

(I did not feel old enough to watch it until way after I watched it. For reasons, I saw it the movie with a bunch of kids 4 years older than me.)

unlabelledView post →Closter Eberbach has a link with where I live now in Italy. In the movie “The Name of the Rose” Sean Connery runs through a door in Eberbach to chase a killer. He emerges in Rocca Calascio a mountain fortress near my home. The guide at Eberbach points out that Connery ran into… a broom cupboard.
unlabelledView post →The Name of the Rose is another great but underrated film. Two monks(Sean Connery and and a young Christian Slater) are sent to investigate a series of murders that have happened at an Italian abbey in the dark ages, what they uncover will rock the church to its core.

Labyrinth. Big Trouble in Little China. The Great Mouse Detective. The Name of the Rose. No notes, no changes.
