The Muppet Movie
The Muppets gather to watch their newly-finished big-budget rich-and-famous feature film: a talent agent persuades Kermit the Frog to leave the swamp to pursue a career in Hollywood. On his way there, he meets a bear, a pig, a whatever (his future muppet crew), and some special celebrity guest stars, while being chased by the desperate owner of a frog-leg restaurant! From TMDB

neutral · AI labelView post →OTD in 1979, THE MUPPET MOVIE opened in theaters across the United States. Jim Henson noted (with typical understatement) that its reception was "Great!" and it was one of the most profitable films of the decade. But getting the Muppets to the big screen in the first place was hard work.

positive · AI labelView post →Watched The Muppet Movie with my daughter today and we rewatched this moment where Miss Piggy jumps on a bunch of bad guys approximately 45 times.
positive · AI labelView post →Muppet History, an account that is a national treasure, and the official Muppets account both point out that THE MUPPET MOVIE debuted in the U.S. a scant 45 years ago today, January 22, 1979. One of the greatest movies ever made.

neutral · AI labelView post →On this date in 1981, THE GREAT MUPPET CAPER was released in theaters across the United States. Given the success of 1979's THE MUPPET MOVIE, a sequel was inevitable though getting there was a bit tricky, with script issues and some Muppet science problems to solve. Dare I say it? Walk with me. /1

positive · AI labelView post →Pre-Christmas double bill of The Muppet Movie and The Muppet Christmas Carol. Sublime. TMCC is a more coherent film and makes me cry, but the songs in TMM are terrific, and the cast includes Mel Brooks, Steve Martin and Orson Welles, all giving spectacular cameo turns

I maintain that one of the worst all-time calls was "The Rainbow Connection" not winning Best Song for The Muppet Movie. Do you remember the winner, "It Goes Like It Goes" from Norma Rae? Exactly my point.

unlabelledView post →"The Muppet Movie", still fantastic. I still think "I'm Going To Go Back There Someday" is the biggest heart-tug of the film. They're at a low point, and then Gonzo, the non-stop joke character, suddenly hits us with a sincere, soft, sweet, wistful, yet still very *Gonzo* song. Wonderful stuff.

unlabelledView post →Funniest film cameos where the joke is just they got the cameo at all? I think it’s probably Orson Welles in the Muppet Movie, just objectively, but I’m partial to Elvis Costello and Mos Def in Talladega Nights because the movie is so confident about squandering them.

So I generally watched it 20-30 times every Christmas. Also this demonstrates I’m old as hell and even so Mel Brooks was older than me when he made the film

The Muppets (have done multiple great Oz sketches and even a bad Oz film; The Muppet Movie is an update of Wizard of Oz). LotR has at least one scene that's a clear reference.
