It’s hard to make an indie movie that reaches kids... that’s why this took so long to make.”
unlabelledView post →Helena Zengel praises director Isaiah Saxon and the practical effects of ‘THE LEGEND OF OCHI’. “He painted a lot of the backgrounds, he created this Ochi with just an image in his head... I feel like it really shows on screen, the love and hard work he put into this movie.”

Puppets instead of CGI, beautiful music, enchanting story and just all around feel good, felt like those old 80's creature movies somehow. I don't think i've seen a bad A24 movie yet. #movie #legendofochi
unlabelledView post →Just got back from seeing The Legend of Ochi. It’s an A24 family film, which means it’s still art house, so not something the same kids who adored Minecraft might see. It’s a pretty interesting mishmash of styles, esp. 80s fantasy and adventure films. The puppetry is amazing and Ochi is very cute.

unlabelledView post →While CGI is the default for many movies these days, the behind-the-scenes clips from A24's The Legend of Ochi show how good (and cute!) practical effects and puppetry can look. reactormag.com/the-legend-o...
unlabelledView post →I recommended THE LEGEND OF OCHI to five people today, all of them movie people, and none of them knew what it was. I guess there are limits to the A24 marketing powers.
unlabelledView post →Boomer dude's complaining was mostly non-verbal muttering, but there was one trailer that got him hopping mad. And of course it was the A24 movie I'm most excited about. The Legend of Ochi starring Willem Dafoe and German actress Helena Zengel. www.youtube.com/watch?v=_jTF...

I also call it "A big-budget @grenzfurthner.bsky.social film" but only a few know.

unlabelledView post →Only myself and the staff in the screening. The don’t run the film if nobody turns up. The Legend of Ochi - the first half especially is wonderful: Ghibli, but as a book of Tarkovsky’s Polaroids, with a huge orchestral score the film wears like a child stomping about in their father’s shoes.
unlabelledView post →Credit to whoever greenlit The Legend of Ochi. It’s the first mythic fantasy film in a while that doesn’t feel like it’s trying to sell me a video game. I really enjoyed it.

Plus saw a great film at the local film fest, The Legend of Ochi, & also enjoyed the live action How to Train Your Dragon (orig is one of my all-time faves); the movies share an interesting thematic resonance.

unlabelledView post →It's really off-putting seeing a movie like The Legend of Ochi, with trailers for remakes of Lilo & Stitch and How to Train Your Dragon preceding it. It's not just Hollywood throwing dirt at Chris Sanders, it's just... Ochi is far from perfect, but man, kids movies used to be interesting.
unlabelledView post →I also did a double feature last weekend. #LastFourWatched A very good week for film. The Ugly Stepsister is probably my fav of the year so far. Lots of earned The Substance comparisons. The Legend of Ochi is a Millennial/Gen Z E.T. the Alien. The Wedding Banquet is a fantastic queer romcom.

unlabelledView post →If you like How To Train Your Dragon, but don't want to watch the upcoming film, may I recommend: The Legend of Ochi (2025) It's essentially "What if Spielberg made a live-action How to Train Your Dragon back in the 80s?" It uses a lot of 80s film techniques, like a puppet that requires 7 people
