The Incredible Shrinking Man
A dangerous combination of radiation and insecticide causes the unfortunate Scott Carey to shrink, slowly but surely, until he is only a few inches tall. His home becomes a wilderness where he must survive everything from spiders living in the cellar to his beloved cat. From TMDB

neutral · AI labelView post →144. The Incredible Shrinking Man (dir. Arnold, 1957). Full confession, I've always found this film... in the best possible way, so upsetting. It's both a poignant metaphor for disability and a nightmarish exploration of a sci-fi b-movie premise taken to its most existentialist conclusions.
positive · AI labelView post →Jack Arnold had a really wild career as a director. His films include: The Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Incredible Shrinking Man, The Mouse That Roared, It Came from Outer Space, Tarantula, High School Confidential, and a 1975 Fred Williamson movie whose title I will not say.
neutral · AI labelView post →That was during a period that monster-movie characters were doing well, and Roy probably liked THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN. Marvel mines its history both for fannish reasons and because times change. They’ve made billions from Ant-Man now. And then there’s Groot.
neutral · AI labelView post →Guessing it’s a remake of The Incredible Shrinking Woman, a Lily Tomlin movie that was on HBO round the clock in the early 80s, which was a remake of The Incredible Shrinking Man from the 50s.
neutral · AI labelView post →The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957) This film has incredible practical effects and sparked an entire genre of size-changing movies, but at its core, it's a feminist film about how the husband becomes increasing insecure and insufferable as his power and dignity are taken from him.

Next up is The Incredible Shrinking Man. But, oh, sorry, you've got to sit through a news update and half an hour of cricket first. Arghhh! #RetroSciFi

(He'd been on a Navy ship where it was the only film to watch, and he had watched it a LOT.)

(I still haven't seen the earlier US movie of the same name.) It had less interaction with people than I wanted, but I guess that was the point, since he was so alienated? A cosmic ending.

Am still thinking of this movie days later and how they ever managed to get some of the shots and angles and size-differences they did. The set design is stellar. As is what it has to say about masculinity and our place in the cosmos. #filmsky

Coincidentally it came out the same year as The Incredible Shrinking Man, which transcends those conventions entirely in a sublime ending.
