neutral · AI labelView post →"There he was, a Russian submarine captain in The Hunt for Red October....There he was in The Piano, an altogether different sort of movie in which he played an altogether different sort of character." And many more. ICYMI @sonnybunch.bsky.social on Sam Neill:

positive · AI labelView post →The Hunt for Red October is not explicitly a holiday movie in any way, but it's one of my favorite movies to watch in the stretch between Thanksgiving and Christmas
positive · AI labelView post →“In John McTiernan’s 1990 film adaptation of “The Hunt for Red October,” Fred Thompson…delivers a haunting warning… “This business will get out of control. It will get out of control and we’ll be lucky to live through it.” We have three years left with a mad king. It does not feel sustainable.”
neutral · AI labelView post →Watching The Hunt for Red October (again). This masterful film continues to get better with age. Tonight I’m thinking about how much more we can appreciate it due to a much younger Stellan Skarsgård, who will become one of the great actors of his generation.
positive · AI labelView post →THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER is a Christmas movie. Change my mind.
positive · AI labelView post →The guy next to me on my flight watched The Hunt for Red October and it’s wild how that movie is so good it makes sense even without sound
positive · AI labelView post →The Hunt for Red October is a cool movie. Submarines are rad.
positive · AI labelView post →"Predator is not necessarily the best movie ever made. Hell, it’s probably not even the best John McTiernan movie ever made; after all, this is the guy who made Die Hard and The Hunt for Red October. But it is an absolutely perfect movie." How about this?

positive · AI labelView post →The Hunt For Red October: Here’s that audacious moment 14m in when the cast are speaking in Russian & then a magical camera movement enables them all to speak English for the rest of the film.
neutral · AI labelView post →BREAKING: I now have the technical advisor for The Hunt for Red October coming onboard to talk about making the film. And we’re going to pair him up with a Cold War historian, IF we get to 500 subscribers on the YouTube channel. 30 to go.
neutral · AI labelView post →My gift to you all this year is the news that The Hunt for Red October (which celebrates its 35 year birthday this year) is a Christmas movie. Settle down for the story. Okay, two stories.
positive · AI labelView post →I guess I'm just gonna import the big thread I put together about The Hunt for Red October back in 2020. I posted so often, so powerfully, so annoyingly about this movie that The Hunt for Red October ended up being the 3rd most rented movie on iTunes
positive · AI labelView post →#OTD in 1930, Sean Connery was born. The Scotsman and former Royal Navy Able Seaman went on the star as the Lithuanian sub commander Marko Ramius in the film adaptation of Tom Clancy's novel THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER first published by the Naval Institute Press. .
neutral · AI labelView post →A podcast episode I listened to ages ago on "The Hunt for Red October" pointed out how the traditional war movie is becoming less and less of a thing because movies about the GWOT inevitably feel more like cop movies - I think to a small degree there is an actual IRL "policification" going on
neutral · AI labelView post →After THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER premiered in 1990, people wondered what the Soviets thought about the movie. When three Soviet ships made a historic visit to San Diego, their top public affairs officer wore a baseball cap embroidered with the film's logo. Apparently he was a fan.
neutral · AI labelView post →Rewatching THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER because (HBO)Max said I might like it (I've seen it a hundred times), and it's just so dang good. This is only (heh, only) a two hour movie, but they fit so much in here. Also, Stellan Skarsgard as the deranged Alfa skipper is so freakin' perfect. What a role.
positive · AI labelView post →46. The Hunt For Red October is the 2nd best submarine movie ever. Must watch! www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Iyn...
positive · AI labelView post →I don't think "The Hunt For Red October" is a "truly great" film, but it's a really really good one, and a big part of that is a terrific cast all the way down, great actors taking supporting roles, including Sam Neill giving heft to a part that could have got lost.
neutral · AI labelView post →Pick a movie, keep one actor. The rest are Muppets. The Hunt for Red October. Keep Sean Connery so that you invariably get Kermit as Jack Ryan.
neutral · AI labelView post →My favourite film, The Hunt for Red October, is on Film4 at the moment. It's a story about a Russian submarine captain who's far more supportive of American goals and values than the current occupant of the Oval Office.
positive · AI labelView post →Today is the 35th anniversary of THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER. As you watch the movies on display at the Oscars, ask yourself: is this movie better than THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER? Your answers may surprise you.
positive · AI labelView post →Cure for any sick day: Hot and sour soup and The Hunt for Red October (send movie recs)
positive · AI labelView post →Look, The Hunt for Red October is a perfect film. PERFECT. But is Patriot Games somehow better?
positive · AI labelView post →Throwing on THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER, a film that embodies the Thanksgiving spirit.
positive · AI labelView post →So a thing about The Hunt for Red October is it's real good, it's REALLY good, and the movie refines it down to all the best bits, but there remains a kinda central...like...moral blindness of the movie. It's bad and wrong for the soviet union to have the perfect first strike weapon, because...duh
neutral · AI labelView post →We had some friends over, three of whom hadn't seen it ... and you were wondering whether the film plays in the present day, it very much absolutely does. You should see THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER. Again or for the first time, doesn't really matter.

unlabelledView post →In another thread we were talking about Sam Neill and his performance in The Hunt for Red October. Magnificent film. But it's a reminder of the stark contrast between a U.S. military system that reacts carefully, makes considered decisions with good outcomes, and the clown show there is now.

The greatest 3-film run ever from a director, John McTiernan: Predator (1987) Die Hard (1988) The Hunt for Red October (1990) And all 3 marked the beginning of enormously successful franchises spanning decades. Can't be beat.

unlabelledView post →Rewatched a film that features two recent sad losses in the cast: Sam Neill and Tim Curry. Sadly no Dolly Parton in The Hunt For Red October is not exactly a showcase for female actors. Dr Beverly Crusher probably has the most lines of any woman and she’s only in two scenes.

The book has Skiing Barbie, which Greer calls Surfing Barbie a couple of times, in a way that eventually shows Greer was just good-naturedly messing with Ryan.
